For you will not have the first place 63.731 with the lambs, but it is no small thing even to be after them, and not to stand with the goats. But if you do not even do this, what plea will then deliver you? For when you were living, as if immortal, you held on to your possessions; but now, since you have learned that you have become mortal, at least now abolish that principle, and as a mortal, take counsel concerning your own affairs. For even if what is about to be said is burdensome and full of horror, yet it is necessary to say it: count the Master among your slaves. Do you free your slaves? Free Christ from hunger and necessity and prisons and nakedness. Did you shudder to hear this? Is it not then more horrifying, when you do not even do this very thing? And here, indeed, the word has made you numb; but when you depart to that place, and hear things much more grievous than these, and see incurable torments, what will you say? To whom will you flee for refuge? Whom will you call as an ally and helper? Abraham? But he will not listen. But your father? But your grandfather? But not even one of these will have the power, even if he is exceedingly holy, to annul that sentence. But are you inhuman and cruel and merciless? Revere the dignity of the one asking. But does his dignity not move you to shame? Be moved by his misfortune. But does not even his misfortune incline you to mercy? Give because of the ease of the request. But if neither his dignity, nor the urgency of his need, nor the ease of giving can persuade you; then because of the greatness of the promised good things grant it to the one in need. For what pardon will there be for those who after so much exhortation despise those in need? Let the initiated hear: He Himself, when He must feed you, does not spare His own flesh; when He must give you drink, He does not spare His own blood; but you do not share even bread or a cup? and what pardon will you have, receiving such things, and sparing things of no value? For not even if you do not give your money for Christ's sake, will you depart having it; nor if you do not die for Christ's sake, will you be immortal. He demands from you these things, which you will give even if He does not demand them, because you are mortal; He wants you to do by your own will these things, which you must also do by necessity. What you must by all means suffer, choose to suffer for My sake; let this alone be your purpose, and I have sufficient obedience. Are these things tolerable, that God gave up even His Son for you, but you do not share even bread with Him who was given up for you, with Him who was slain for you? The Father for your sake did not spare Him, and this, though He was His true Son; but you overlook Him wasting away with hunger, and this when you are about to spend from His own things, 63.732 and to spend it for your own sake? And what could be worse than this transgression? He was given up for you, He was slain for you, He goes about hungry for you, you give from His own things, so that you yourself may be profited, and not even so do you give? And than what stones would you not be more senseless, when so many things draw you, yet you remain in this diabolical cruelty? For if you do not repay Me, He says, as one who has suffered something for you, have mercy on account of My poverty; if you are not willing to have mercy on account of My poverty, be moved on account of My sickness, be softened on account of My prison; but if not even these things make you benevolent, assent on account of the smallness of the request; for He asks for nothing costly, but bread and shelter and a word of comfort. But if even after these things you remain savage, at least for the sake of the kingdom become better. But do you have no regard for that either? At least be softened toward nature itself seeing one naked, and remember that nakedness in which I was stripped on the cross for your sake. If you do not wish for that one, at least for this one, in which I am stripped through the poor. I do not say, Relieve my poverty, nor, Grant me wealth, but I ask for bread and a garment and a little comfort from hunger; and if I fall into prison, I do not compel you to loose my bonds and cast me out, but I seek one thing only, that you see me bound for your sake, and I have received sufficient grace. For I am able even without these things to crown you, but I wish to be a debtor to you as well, so that the crown may bring you some fruit and confidence. For this reason, although I am able to feed Myself, I go about begging, and at your doors

Ἀλλ' οὔτε τὰ τῆς συμφορᾶς εἰς ἔλεόν σε ἐπικάμπτει; διὰ τὸ τῆς αἰτήσεως εὔκολον δός. Εἰ δὲ οὔτε τὸ ἀξίωμα, οὔτε τὸ ἀναγκαῖον τῆς χρείας, οὔτε τὸ εὔκολον τῆς δόσεως δύναταί σε πεῖσαι· οὐκοῦν διὰ τὸ μέγεθος τῶν ἐπηγγελμένων ἀγαθῶν πάρασχε τῷ δεομένῳ. Τίς γὰρ ἔσται συγγνώμη τοῖς μετὰ τοσαύτην παραίνεσιν τῶν δεομένων ὑπερορῶσιν; Ἀκουέτωσαν οἱ μεμυημένοι· αὐτὸς, ὅταν δέῃ σε θρέψαι, οὐδὲ τῆς σαρκὸς φείδεται τῆς ἑαυτοῦ· ὅταν δέῃ ποτίσαι, οὐδὲ τοῦ αἵματος φείδεται· σὺ δὲ οὐδὲ ἄρτου μεταδίδως οὐδὲ ποτηρίου; καὶ ποίαν ἕξεις συγγνώμην τοιαῦτα λαμβάνων, καὶ τῶν εὐτελῶν φειδόμενος; Οὐδὲ γὰρ, ἂν διὰ τὸν Χριστὸν μὴ δῷς τὰ χρήματα, ἔχων αὐτὰ ἀπελεύσῃ· οὐδὲ γὰρ, ἂν διὰ τὸν Χριστὸν μὴ ἀποθάνῃς, ἀθάνατος ἔσῃ. Ταῦτα ἀπαιτεῖ παρὰ σοῦ, ἃ καὶ μὴ ἀπαιτοῦντος δώσεις, διὰ τὸ θνητὸς εἶναι· ταῦτά σε βούλεται ποιεῖν σῇ γνώμῃ, ἃ καὶ ἀνάγκῃ σε δεῖ ποιῆσαι. Ἃ πάντως ἀνάγκη σε παθεῖν, ἐλοῦ παθεῖν δι' ἐμέ· τοῦτο προκείσθω μόνον, καὶ ἀρκοῦσαν ἔχω τὴν ὑπακοήν. Ἆρά γε φορητὰ ταῦτα, ὅτι ὁ μὲν Θεὸς καὶ τὸν Υἱὸν ἐξέδωκεν ὑπὲρ σοῦ, σὺ δὲ οὐδ' ἄρτου μεταδίδως αὐτῷ τῷ διὰ σὲ ἐκδοθέντι, τῷ διὰ σὲ σφαγέντι; Ὁ Πατὴρ διὰ σὲ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο, καὶ ταῦτα γνησίου ὄντος· σὺ δὲ καὶ λιμῷ τηκόμενον περιορᾷς, καὶ ταῦτα ἀπὸ τῶν αὐτοῦ μέλ 63.732 λων ἀναλίσκειν, καὶ διὰ σαυτὸν ἀναλίσκειν; καὶ τί ταύτης τῆς παρανομίας χεῖρον γένοιτ' ἄν; Ἐξεδόθη διὰ σὲ, ἐσφάγη διὰ σὲ, περιέρχεται πεινῶν διὰ σὲ, ἐκ τῶν αὐτοῦ δίδως, ἵνα αὐτὸς ὠφεληθῇς, καὶ οὐδὲ οὕτω δίδως; Καὶ ποίων οὐκ ἂν εἴης ἀναισθητότερος λίθων, τοσούτων σε ἑλκόντων πραγμάτων, ἐπὶ τῆς διαβολικῆς ταύτης μένων ὠμότητος; Εἰ γὰρ μὴ ἀμείβῃ με, φησὶν, ὡς ὑπὲρ σοῦ τι παθόντα, διὰ τὴν πενίαν ἐλέησον, εἰ δὲ μὴ βούλει διὰ τὴν πενίαν ἐλεῆσαι, διὰ τὴν νόσον ἐπικάμφθητι, διὰ τὸ δεσμωτήριον ἐπικλάσθητι· εἰ δὲ μηδὲ ταῦτά σε ποιεῖ φιλάνθρωπον, διὰ τὸ κοῦφον τῆς αἰτήσεως ἐπίνευσον· οὐδὲν γὰρ αἰτεῖ πολυτελὲς, ἀλλ' ἄρτον καὶ στέγην καὶ ῥημάτων παράκλησιν. Εἰ δὲ καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐπιμένεις ἄγριος ὢν, κἂν διὰ τὴν βασιλείαν γενοῦ βελτίων. Ἀλλ' οὐδὲ ἐκείνης σοί ἐστί τις λόγος; κἂν πρὸς τὴν φύσιν αὐτὴν ἐπικλάσθητι γυμνὸν ὁρῶν, καὶ τῆς γυμνότητος ἀναμνήσθητι ἐκείνης, ἣν ἐγυμνώθην ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ διὰ σέ. Εἰ δὲ ἐκείνης οὐ βούλει, κἂν ταύτης, ἢν διὰ τῶν πενήτων γυμνοῦμαι. Οὐ λέγω, Λῦσόν μου τὴν πενίαν, οὐδὲ, Χάρισαί μοι πλοῦτον, ἀλλ' ἄρτον αἰτῶ καὶ ἱμάτιον καὶ λιμοῦ παραμυθίαν μικράν· κἂν εἰς δεσμωτήριον ἐμπέσω, οὐκ ἀναγκάζω τὰ δεσμὰ λῦσαι καὶ ἐκβαλεῖν, ἀλλ' ἓν ἐπιζητῶ μόνον, ἵνα ἴδῃς δεδεμένον διὰ σὲ, καὶ ἀρκοῦσαν ἔλαβον χάριν. ∆ύναμαι μὲν γὰρ καὶ χωρὶς τούτων σε στεφανοῦν, βούλομαι δέ σοι καὶ ὀφειλέτης εἶναι, ἵνα φέρῃ σοί τινα καρπὸν καὶ παῤῥησίαν ὁ στέφανος. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ δυνάμενος ἐμαυτὸν θρέψαι, περιέρχομαι προσαιτῶν, καὶ ταῖς θύραις σου
