they will be condemned. For he who dishonors the father, how will he be counted a son? He who is separated from the light, how could he live in it as in the day? By no means, brothers.
But if someone should say that he is able to keep all the commandments, let him know that he slanders and condemns God as one who commanded impossible things to us; who will not escape the inescapable judgment, but as the one who said: “I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter,” this one also will be condemned, and will be likened to the serpent who said to Adam: “God knows that in the hour you eat from the tree you will be like him, for this reason he commanded you not to eat from it.” For such a one calls God a liar and a deceiver and full of envy; a liar, on the one hand, because when He said: “My yoke (298) is easy and my burden is light,” this one declares it not only not light, but even unbearable; and a deceiver, on the other hand, because He came down promising many things and wishing to give us nothing, but rather, envying our salvation, He commanded us impossible things to do and to keep, so that, since we are unable to fulfill these things, seizing a supposedly reasonable pretext, He might deprive us of those good things. But woe to those who say these things, if they do not repent; for our Master and God commanded nothing burdensome, nothing oppressive, but rather indeed all things are at once both manageable and easy, just as—believe me—I myself have come to know that the commandment of God is easy and the attainment of both Him and of His kingdom. But I will show this to you by means of an example.
A certain man, serving some rebel adversary and enemy of the king of the Christians, winning many trophies against his servants and performing deeds of valor, and being in greatest honor with that tyrant and the armies under him, was variously summoned by the king of the Christians to come to him and be with him and be deemed worthy of great gifts and to reign with him. But for some time he was not willing, but rather from then on rekindled the war against him even worse. On one occasion, therefore, coming to his senses and repenting, he decided to take flight and go alone to the king, reasoning this to himself that, even if until now I did not obey the king summoning me, yet I believe that He will not count against me, now that I am returning, the delay and tardiness of so many years, because He is, as I hear, compassionate and a lover of good, and he will have compassion on me and will fulfill all that he promised me. As he therefore reasoned these things from his heart, he also did them in deed; approaching the king and grasping his feet, (299) he begged forgiveness with weeping. Whom at once that good king, seized with unexpected joy, receiving him, held in wonder his change and humility, because whereas he ought rather to speak freely and demand honors for the love and faith which he had shown toward him by leaving the rebel and coming to his kingdom, he lies there weeping for his tardiness and the evils previously done by him. Raising him up, "he fell upon his neck and kissed him," both all of him and his weeping eyes for many hours. Then ordering a crown and a robe and sandals like those he himself wore to be brought, he himself with his own hands clothed the former enemy and adversary, reproaching him for nothing at all; and not only this, but night and day rejoicing with him and celebrating together, embracing and kissing him mouth to mouth, he loved him so much that not even in his sleep was he separated from him, reclining with him and embracing him on the couch and covering him on all sides with his own cloak and placing his own face upon all his limbs.

κατακριθήσονται. Ὁ τόν πατέρα γάρ ἀτιμάζων, πῶς υἱός λογισθήσεται; Ὁ τοῦ φωτός χωριζόμενος, πῶς ἐν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ διάξειεν; Οὐδαμῶς, ἀδελφοί.
Εἰ δέ λέγοι τις ὅτι δύναται τηρῆσαι πάσας τάς ἐντολάς, γινωσκέτω ὅτι τόν Θεόν ἐνδιαβάλλει καί κατακρίνει ὡς ἀδύνατα ἡμῖν ἐπιτάξαντα· ὅς οὐκ ἐκφεύξεται τό τῆς δίκης ἄφυκτον, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς ὁ εἰπών· «Ἤδειν σε ὅτι σκληρός εἶ, θερίζων ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρας καί συνάγων ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισας», καί οὗτος κατακριθήσεται, καί τῷ εἰπόντι τῷ Ἀδάμ ὄφει· «Γινώσκων ὁ Θεός ὅτι ᾗ ὥρᾳ φάγεσθε ἀπό τοῦ ξύλου ὅμοιοι αὐτῷ ἔσεσθε, τούτου χάριν ἐνετείλατο ὑμῖν μή φαγεῖν ἐξ αὐτοῦ», ὁμοιωθήσεται. Ψεύστην γάρ καί πλάνον καί φθόνου μεστόν τόν Θεόν ὁ τοιοῦτος ἀποκαλεῖ· ψεύστην μέν, ὅτι ἐκείνου εἰπόντος· «Ὁ ζυγός (298) μου χρηστός καί τό φορτίον μου ἐλαφρόν ἐστιν», οὐ μόνον οὐκ ἐλαφρόν οὗτος, ἀλλά καί ἀβάστακτον αὐτό ἀποφαίνεται· πλάνον δέ, ὅτι κατῆλθε πολλά ὑποσχόμενος καί μηδέν δοοῦναι θέλων ἡμῖν, μᾶλλον δέ φθονῶν τῇ σωτηρίᾳ ἡμῶν ἀδύνατα ἐπέταξεν ἡμῖν, ποιῆσαι καί φυλάξαι, ὅπως ἐκπληρῶσαι ταῦτα μή δυναμένους, προφάσεως δῆθεν εὐλόγου λαβόμενος, τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἡμᾶς ἐκείνων ἀποστερήσῃ. Ἀλλ᾿ οὐαί τοῖς ταῦτα λέγουσιν, ἐάν μή μετανοήσωσιν· οὐδέν γάρ φορτικόν, οὐδέν ἐπαχθές ὁ ∆εσπότης ἡμῶν καί Θεός ἐνετείλατο, μᾶλλον μέν οὖν ῥᾴδιά τε ὁμοῦ πάντα καί εὔκολα, καθά - πιστεύσατέ μοι - καί αὐτός ἔγνων ἐγώ εὔκολον εἶναι τήν ἐντολήν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί τήν ἐπίτευξιν αὐτοῦ τε καί τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ. Ἀλλά διά παραδείγματος τοῦτο ὑμῖν ὑποδείξω.
Ἄνθρωπός τις ἀντάρτῃ δουλεύων τινί ἀντιδίκῳ καί τοῦ βασιλέως τῶν Χριστιανῶν ἐχθρῷ, πολλά τρόπαια κατά τῶν δούλων αὐτοῦ καί ἀνδραγαθίας ποιῶν, καί ἐν τιμῇ μεγίστῃ παρά τῷ τυράννῳ ἐκείνῳ καί τοῖς ὑπ᾿αὐτόν στρατεύμασιν ὤν, ἐμηνύθη παρά τοῦ βασιλέως τῶν Χριστιανῶν διαφόρως τοῦ προσελθεῖν καί σύν αὐτῷ εἶναι καί ἀξιωθῆναι μεγάλων δωρεῶν καί συμβασιλεύειν αὐτῷ. Ὁ δέ ἐπί χρόνους τινάς οὐκ ἠβουλήθη, κατ᾿ αὐτοῦ δέ μᾶλλον χεῖρον ἔκτοτε τόν πόλεμον ἀνερρίπισεν. Ἐν μιᾷ τοίνυν καθ᾿ ἑαυτόν γνωσιμαχήσας καί μεταμεληθείς, ἐβουλεύσατο φυγῇ χρήσασθαι καί μόνος πρός τόν βασιλέα πορευθῆναι, τοῦτο πρός ἑαυτόν λογισάμενος ὅτι, εἰ καί μέχρι τοῦ νῦν μηνύοντί μοι τῷ βασιλεῖ οὐχ ὑπήκουσα, ἀλλά πιστεύω ὡς οὐ μή λογισθῇ μου νῦν ἐπιστρέφοντος τήν ἀναβολήν τῶν τοσούτων ἐτῶν καί βραδυτῆτα διά τό εἶναι αὐτόν, ὡς ἀκούω, συμπαθῆ καί φιλάγαθον, συμπαθήσει δέ μοι καί ἅ ὑπέσχετό μοι πάντα ἀποπληρώσει. Ὡς οὖν ταῦτα ἀπό καρδίας ἐλογίσατο, καί ἔργῳ ἐποίησε· προσελθών τῷ βασιλεῖ καί τούς πόδας κρατήσας αὐτοῦ, (299) συγχώρησιν μετά κλαυθμοῦ ἐξῃτήσατο. Ὅν εὐθύς, τῇ ἀπροσδοκήτῳ χαρᾷ ὁ χρηστός ἐκεῖνος ληφθείς βασιλεύς, ἀποδεξάμενος, ἐπί θαύματος εἶχε τήν τούτου μεταβολήν καί ταπείνωσιν, ἀνθ᾿ ὧν ὅπως παρρησιάζεσθαι μᾶλλον ὤφειλεν και τιμάς ἀπαιτεῖν ὑπέρ ἧς ἐνεδείξατο πρός αὐτόν ἀγάπης καί πίστεως, καταλιπών μέν τόν ἀντάρτην, προσελθών δέ τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ, κεῖται θρηνῶν ὑπέρ τῆς βραδυτῆτος καί τῶν παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ προγεγονότων κακῶν, ἀναστήσας αὐτόν «ἐπέπεσεν ἐπί τόν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καί κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν» τε ὅλον καί τούς δακρύοντας αὐτοῦ ὀφθαλμούς ἐπί ὥρας πολλάς. Εἶτα στέφος καί στολήν καί ὑποδήματα ὅμοια ὧν αὐτός ἐφόρει ἐνεχθῆναι κελεύσας, αὐτός δι᾿ ἑαυτοῦ τόν πρώην ἐχθρόν καί ἀντίδικον περιέβαλε, μηδέν ὅλως προσονειδίσας αὐτόν· καί οὐ τοῦτο μόνον, ἀλλά νυκτός καί ἡμέρας συγχαίρων αὐτῷ καί συνευφραινόμενος, περιλαμβάνων τε καί κατασπαζόμενος στόμα πρός στόμα αὐτόν, τοσοῦτον ὑπερηγάπησεν αὐτόν ὅτι οὐδέ ἐν τῷ ὑπνοῦν αὐτοῦ ἐχωρίζετο, συνανακλινόμενος αὐτῷ καί περιλαμβάνων ἐπί τῆς κλίνης καί πάντοθεν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ χλανιδίῳ περισκέπων καί ἐπιτιθείς τό ἑαυτοῦ πρόσωπον ἐπί πᾶσι τοῖς αὐτοῦ μέλεσιν.
