is the soul that by night and day turns over no other care than how, on the great day on which all creation will stand around the Judge to give an account of their deeds, it too may be able to render the account of its life lightly. For the one who places that day and hour before his eyes and is always practicing his defense before the tribunal from which there is no appeal, such a one will either not sin at all or very little, because our sinning happens in the absence of fear. But for those in whom the expectation of the things threatened is vivid, the fear that dwells with them will give such persons no opportunity to fall into ill-advised actions or thoughts. Therefore, remember God and have fear in your heart and receive all into the fellowship of your prayers. For great also is the help of those who are able to prevail upon God. And do not cease doing these things. For both while we are living this life in the flesh, prayer is a good helper, and when we are departing from here, it is a sufficient provision for the age to come. But just as solicitude is a good thing, so again despondency and despair and being hopeless of salvation are among the things that harm the soul. Therefore, hope in the goodness of God and await his help, knowing that if we turn to him well and genuinely, not only will he not reject us completely, but while we are still speaking the words of our prayer he will say, “Behold, I am here.”

175. To Magnenianus the Comes. 175.1 Recently your reverence wrote to me, commanding me to write clearly some other things also about the faith. But I, for my part, admire your zeal in the matter and pray to God that your choice of good things may be unremittingly in you and that you may always be advancing and be perfected both in knowledge and in good works. But because I do not wish to leave behind a treatise on the faith nor to write different creeds, I have refrained from sending what you requested. Yet it seems to me that you are being assailed by the talk of the people there, who are doing nothing, who for our slander say certain things, as if they will establish themselves by this, if they should falsely allege the most shameful things against us. For past time reveals them, and advancing experience will make them more revealed. But we exhort those who have hoped in Christ to seek nothing beyond the ancient faith, but as we believe, so also to be baptized, and as we are baptized, so also to glorify, and that it is enough for us to confess those names which we have received from Holy Scripture and to flee innovation concerning them. For our salvation is not in the invention of titles, but in the sound confession concerning the Godhead in which we have believed.

176. To Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium.

176.1 May the holy God grant that this letter of ours come into your hands when you are sound in body and free from all business and doing everything according to your mind, so that our exhortation may not be in vain, by which we now exhort you to appear in our city so that the festival, which it is the custom for our Church to celebrate annually for the martyrs, may become more solemn. For be persuaded, my most honored and truly most desired one, that although our people have experienced many things, they cling to no good fortune so much as to your presence, so great a goad of love did you leave in them from that brief meeting. In order, therefore, that the Lord also

ἐστὶ ψυχὴ ἡ νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας μηδεμίαν ἄλλην μέριμναν στρέφουσα ἢ πῶς, ἐπὶ τῆς μεγάλης ἡμέρας καθ' ἣν πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις περιστήσεται τὸν Κριτὴν τὰς εὐθύνας τῶν πεπραγμένων ἀποδιδοῦσα, καὶ αὐτὴ δυνηθῇ κούφως ἀποθέσθαι τὸν λόγον τῶν βεβιωμένων. Ὁ γὰρ ἐκείνην τὴν ἡμέραν καὶ τὴν ὥραν πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν τιθέμενος καὶ ἀεὶ μελετῶν τὴν ἐπὶ τοῦ ἀπαραλογίστου κριτηρίου ἀπολογίαν, ὁ τοιοῦτος ἢ οὐδὲν ἢ παντελῶς ἐλάχιστα ἁμαρτήσεται, διότι τὸ ἁμαρτάνειν ἡμῖν κατὰ ἀπουσίαν τοῦ φόβου γίνεται. Οἷς δ' ἂν ἐναργὴς παρῇ τῶν ἀπειλουμένων ἡ προσδοκία, οὐδένα καιρὸν δώσει τοῖς τοιούτοις ὁ σύνοι κος φόβος εἰς ἀβουλήτους πράξεις ἢ ἐνθυμήσεις ἐκπίπτειν. Καὶ μέμνησο τοίνυν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἔχε τὸν φόβον ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ πάντας εἰς τὴν κοινωνίαν τῶν εὐχῶν παρα λάμβανε. Μεγάλη γὰρ καὶ ἡ τῶν δυναμένων δυσωπεῖν τὸν Θεὸν βοήθεια. Καὶ μὴ διαλείπῃς ταῦτα ποιοῦσα. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ζῶσιν ἡμῖν τὴν ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ ταύτῃ ζωὴν ἀγαθὴ βοηθὸς ἡ προσευχὴ καὶ ἀπερχομένοις ἐντεῦθεν ἐφόδιον διαρκὲς πρὸς τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν μέλλοντα. Ὥσπερ δὲ ἡ φροντὶς πρᾶγμά ἐστιν ἀγαθόν, οὕτω πάλιν ἡ ἀθυμία καὶ ἡ ἀπόγνωσις καὶ τὸ δυσελπίστως ἔχειν πρὸς σωτηρίαν τῶν βλαπτόντων ἐστὶ τὴν ψυχήν. Ἐπέλπιζε τοίνυν τῇ ἀγαθό τητι τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἐκδέχου αὐτοῦ τὴν ἀντίληψιν γινώσκουσα ὅτι, ἐὰν καλῶς καὶ γνησίως πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐπιστραφῶμεν, οὐ μόνον οὐκ ἀπορρίψει ἡμᾶς εἰς τὸ παντελές, ἀλλ' ἔτι λαλούντων ἡμῶν τὰ ῥήματα τῆς προσευχῆς ἐρεῖ· «Ἰδοὺ πάρειμι».

175.τ ΜΑΓΝΗΝΙΑΝΩ ΚΟΜΗΤΙ 175.1 Πρῴην ἐπέστελλέ μοι ἡ σεμνότης σου ἄλλα τινὰ καὶ περὶ πίστεως

γράψαι ἡμᾶς ἐναργῶς προστάσσουσα. Ἀλλ' ἐγὼ τὴν μὲν σὴν περὶ τὸ πρᾶγμα ἄγαμαι σπουδὴν καὶ εὔχομαι τῷ Θεῷ ἀνενδότως σοι τῶν ἀγαθῶν τὴν αἵρεσιν ἐνυπάρχειν καὶ ἀεί σε προκόπτοντα καὶ γνώσει καὶ ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς τελειοῦσθαι. ∆ιὰ δὲ τὸ μὴ βούλεσθαι περὶ πίστεως σύνταγμα καταλιμπάνειν μηδὲ γράφειν διαφόρους πίστεις, παρετηρησάμην ἀποστεῖλαι ἃ ἐπεζητήσατε. Πλὴν δοκεῖτέ μοι περιηχεῖσθαι παρὰ τῶν αὐτόθι, τῶν μηδὲν ἐργαζομέ νων, οἳ ἐπὶ διαβολῇ ἡμετέρᾳ λέγουσί τινα, ὡς ἐκ τούτου ἑαυτοὺς συστήσοντες, ἐὰν ἡμῶν τὰ αἴσχιστα κατα ψεύσωνται. Ἐκείνους μὲν γὰρ φανεροῖ ὁ παρελθὼν χρόνος καὶ προϊοῦσα ἡ πεῖρα φανερωτέρους ποιήσει. Ἡμεῖς δὲ παρακαλοῦμεν τοὺς ἠλπικότας εἰς Χριστὸν μηδὲν παρὰ τὴν ἀρχαίαν περιεργάζεσθαι πίστιν, ἀλλ' ὡς πιστεύομεν, οὕτω καὶ βαπτίζεσθαι, ὡς δὲ βαπτιζόμεθα, οὕτω καὶ δοξολογεῖν, ὀνόματα δὲ ἀρκεῖν ἡμῖν ἐκεῖνα ὁμολογεῖν ἃ παρελάβομεν παρὰ τῆς Ἁγίας Γραφῆς καὶ τὴν ἐπὶ τούτοις καινοτομίαν διαφεύγειν. Οὐ γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἐφευρέσει τῶν προσηγοριῶν ἡ σωτηρία ἡμῶν, ἀλλ' ἐν τῇ ὑγιεῖ περὶ τῆς Θεότητος εἰς ἣν πεπιστεύκαμεν ὁμολογίᾳ.

176.1 Παράσχοι ὁ ἅγιος Θεὸς ἐρρωμένῳ σοι τὸ σῶμα καὶ ἀπὸ πάσης ἀσχολίας

ἀνειμένῳ καὶ πάντα πράττοντι κατὰ νοῦν τὴν ἐπιστολὴν ἡμῶν ταύτην εἰς χεῖρας ἐλθεῖν, ἵνα μὴ ἄπρακτος ἡμῶν ἡ παράκλησις γένηται ἣν παρακαλοῦμεν νῦν ἐπιφανῆναί σε ἡμῶν τῇ πόλει ἐπὶ τῷ σεμνοτέραν γενέσθαι τὴν πανήγυριν ἣν δι' ἔτους ἄγειν ἐπὶ τοῖς μάρτυ σιν ἔθος ἐστὶν ἡμῶν τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ. Πέπεισο γάρ, τιμιώ τατέ μοι καὶ ποθεινότατε ὡς ἀληθῶς, ὅτι, πολλῶν εἰς πεῖραν ἐλθὼν ὁ παρ' ἡμῖν λαός, τῆς οὐδενὸς οὕτως ἀντέχεται ἐπιτυχίας ὡς τῆς σῆς παρουσίας, τοιοῦτον κέντρον ἀγάπης ἐκ τῆς μικρᾶς ἐκείνης συντυχίας ἐναφῆ κας.
