we are accustomed to flow obliquely; and other, he says, two chambers I saw on either side of the divine temple, the one looking toward the north, and the other toward the south; for he called this a place of prayer, since it is the custom for the Jews who dwell to the north of Jerusalem, when praying, to look toward the midday according to the position of the city. And he says, between the divine temple and the so-called chamber, to set apart five cubits; and from the western wall to the chamber itself to be seventy cubits, and ninety in width. And in the middle, he says, was the divine temple, all covered with boards, not only the walls, but also the floor and the roof. And it had latticed windows, 81.1225 that is, perforated ones like a net. And the carvings on the walls and on the doorposts had likenesses of cherubim and palm trees; and each of the cherubim had two faces, one of a lion, and one of a man, and the one looked toward this palm tree, and the other toward that one. But he saw two faces carved instead of the four; since it was not possible to carve four accurately on boards. And he says also to have seen the altar that is before the holy places; and it had, he says, a height of three cubits, and two cubits in length, and the width likewise, that is, an equilateral square. And I was taught by the one showing me these things that this was the table that is before the Lord. It is fitting to note that the table, which receives the loaves of the presentation, he called an altar, while the great Moses named it only a table. Therefore, a door is opened beforehand for ours through the prophecy. And, he says, the door of the holy places was not a double-door, but a fourfold-door, so that opening they would fold back on themselves; and they themselves also had the same carvings. And he says also to have seen other chambers situated in the outer court, and before the chambers a walk of ten cubits in width, and a hundred in length. And the light of the walk he calls what is called by us a light-source. And he said that these were also set apart for the priests for the enjoyment of the hallowed food, and the one showing these things commanded that no one share with the priests the entrance into those, nor indeed that the priests themselves, clothed in the priestly garment and performing the divine liturgy, should go out into the outer court. For it is not lawful for any of the people to touch them when they are clothed in the priestly garment; wherefore it is fitting in those rooms to take off the garment set apart for the liturgies, and to put on another, and thus to go out to the people. And he showed me also the circuit, having used the measure, and taught me by measuring, that each of the four, the eastern, and the western, the southern, and the northern, had five hundred cubits, so that the circuit of the five hundred being quadrupled amounts to two thousand cubits.

CHAPTER 43. 1, 2. And he brought me, he says, to the gate looking toward the east, and

he brought me out. And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming along the way toward the east, and a sound of the camp, as the sound of many doubling. In the Hebrew, and in the Syriac, I found: "As the sound of many waters. And the earth was shining, as a light from his glory round about." 81.1228 3. And the vision which I saw, according to the appearance which I saw when I was entering to anoint the city. Again here too in the Syriac, and in the Hebrew, I found: "When I entered to destroy the city." And it indicates the second vision, in which he saw both those who brought the axes, and who were striking the city, and the one who scattered the coals over the whole city, when he also saw the sign placed upon those groaning over the transgressions of the people. And it is likely that the Seventy, having paid attention to the thought, called the marking of the foreheads of those delivered from the punishment of the strikers an anointing. "And the vision of the chariot was like the vision which I saw at the river Chebar." Immediately
