A popular uprising concerning the 407 Christian dogma arose among the Byzantines in Constantinople, as the same emperor wished to add to the Trisagion the phrase “who was crucified for us, have mercy on us,” just as they say it in the eastern cities. And the multitude of the city, having gathered, rioted violently, as if something strange were being added to the faith of the Christians. And a clamor arose in the palace, so that the prefect of the city, Plato, rushing in, fled and hid from the wrath of the people. For, rioting, they were shouting, “Another emperor for Romania,” and going to the house of Marinus the Syrian, the former prefect, they burned his house and plundered all his belongings; for they did not find him. For having heard that the great multitude of the people was coming to his house, he fled; for they were saying that as an easterner he himself suggested to the emperor that this be said. And having plundered his public property, they were cutting his silver with axes and were dividing it among themselves. And they found in his house an eastern monk, and having seized him, they killed him, and carrying his head on a pole, they were shouting, “This is the plotter against the Trinity.” And coming to the house of Juliana, the most illustrious patricia, they were shouting for her husband Areobindus to be emperor of Romania; and Areobindus fled, hiding in a ferry-boat. And the same emperor Anastasius went up into the 408 kathisma in the Hippodrome without his diadem; and the people, knowing this, entered into the Hippodrome. And through his divine address he managed the multitudes of the city, commanding them not to kill at random or to attack anyone; and the entire multitude became quiet, asking him to wear the crown. And since they became quiet and desisted from gathering, he ordered arrests to be made; and with many having been seized, some he punished, and others he tortured through the prefect of the city. And they suffered these things for many days, and with an innumerable multitude having been killed, great order and no little fear came to be in Constantinople and in every city of Romania. And after a short time, the same emperor Anastasius saw in a vision that there stood before him a certain perfect, well-formed man, holding a written codex, and reading and having unrolled five leaves of the codex and having read the emperor's name, he said to him, “Behold, because of your greed I am erasing fourteen;” and he erased it with his own finger, he says. And having been disturbed, the same emperor Anastasius awoke, and having summoned Amantius the cubicularius and praepositus, he related to him the vision of the dream. This 409 Amantius said to him, “Live forever, O emperor; for I too saw a dream this night, that as I was standing before your majesty, a swine coming up behind me, like a great wild boar, and having seized the edge of my chlamys with its mouth and having shaken it, it brought me down to the ground, and consumed me, devouring and trampling me.” And the emperor, having summoned Proclus the Asian philosopher, the dream interpreter, who was very skilled, told him the vision, and likewise also Amantius; and he made clear to them the meaning of the vision and that after a time they would die. But the same emperor Anastasius, after his first gifts, again sent others to all the subjects of his state. And he also built in every city of Romania various buildings and walls and aqueducts, and having cleared out harbors and having built public baths from their foundations, and he provided many other things in each city. And after a short time, having fallen ill, he lay down, and a very great lightning and thunder having occurred, having been terrified, the same emperor Anastasius gave up the ghost, being ninety years and five months old.

ἐγένετο δημοτικὴ ἐπανάστασις πε 407 ρὶ τοῦ χριστιανικοῦ δόγματος παρὰ τῶν Βυζαντίων ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει, ὡς βουληθέντος τοῦ αὐτοῦ βασιλέως προσθεῖναι εἰς τὸ Τρισάγιος τὸ «ὁ σταυρωθεὶς δι' ἡμᾶς, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς», καθὼς ἐν ταῖς ἀνατολικαῖς πόλεσι λέγουσι. καὶ συναθροισθὲν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς πόλεως ἐστασίασαν δυνατῶς, ὥς τινος παραξένου προστιθεμένου τῇ πίστει τῶν χριστιανῶν. καὶ θρύλος ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ παλατίῳ, ὥστε τὸν ἔπαρχον τῆς πόλεως Πλάτωνα εἰσδραμόντα φυγεῖν καὶ ἀποκρυβῆναι τὴν τοῦ δήμου ὀργήν. ἔκραζον γὰρ στασιάζοντες, Ἄλλον βασιλέα τῇ Ῥωμανίᾳ, καὶ ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰ Μαρίνου τοῦ Σύρου τοῦ ἀπὸ ἐπάρχων ἔκαυσαν τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπραίδευσαν τὰ αὐτοῦ πάντα· αὐτὸν γὰρ οὐχ εὗρον. ἀκούσας γὰρ ὅτι εἰς τὸν αὐτοῦ τὸ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ δήμου ἔρχεται, ἔφυγεν· ἔλεγον γὰρ ὅτι ὡς ἀνατολικὸς αὐτὸς τῷ βασιλεῖ ὑπέβαλε λέγεσθαι τοῦτο. καὶ πραιδεύσαντες τὰ αὐτοῦ δημόσια τὸν ἄργυρον αὐτοῦ εἰς ἀξίνας ἔκοπτον καὶ ἐμερίζοντο. εὗρον δὲ εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ μονάζοντα ἀνατολικόν, καὶ τοῦτον συλλαβόντες ἐφόνευσαν, καὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ εἰς κοντὸν βαστάζοντες ἔκραζον, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἐπίβουλος τῆς τριάδος. καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὰ Ἰουλιανῆς τῆς ἐπιφανεστάτης πατρικίας ἔκραζον διὰ τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς Ἀρεόβινδον βασιλέα τῇ Ῥωμανίᾳ· καὶ ἔφυγεν Ἀρεόβινδος ἐν περάματι κρυβείς. καὶ ἀνελθὼν ὁ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς Ἀναστάσιος ἐν τῷ ἱπποδρομίῳ εἰς 408 τὸ κάθισμα δίχα διαδήματος· καὶ τοῦτο γνοὺς ὁ δῆμος εἰσῆλθεν ἐν τῷ Ἱππικῷ· καὶ διὰ θείας προσφωνήσεως αὐτοῦ μετεχειρίσατο τὰ πλήθη τῆς πόλεως, παραγγείλας αὐτοῖς μὴ ὡς ἔτυχε φονεύειν ἢ ἐπέρχεσθαί τισι· καὶ ἡσύχασεν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος, αἰτήσαντες αὐτὸν φορέσαι τὸ στέμμα. καὶ ἐξότε ἡσύχασαν καὶ ἀνεχώρησαν τοῦ συναθροίζεσθαι, ἐκέλευσε κατοχὴν γενέσθαι· καὶ πολλῶν κρατηθέντων, τοὺς μὲν ἐτιμωρήσατο, τοὺς δὲ ἐρευμάτισε διὰ τοῦ ἐπάρχου τῆς πόλεως. ταῦτα δὲ ἔπασχον ἐπὶ πολλὰς ἡμέρας, καὶ πλήθους ἀπείρου φονευθέντος εὐταξία ἐγένετο μεγάλη καὶ φόβος οὐκ ὀλίγος ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει καὶ ἐν ἑκάστῃ πόλει τῆς Ῥωμανίας. Μετὰ δὲ ὀλίγον καιρὸν εἶδεν ἐν ὁράματι ὁ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς Ἀναστάσιος ὅτι ἔστη ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ἀνήρ τις τέλειος, εὐσχήμων, βαστάζων κώδικα γεγραμμένον, καὶ ἀναγινώσκων καὶ ἀναπτύξας τοῦ κώδικος φύλλα πέντε καὶ ἀναγνοὺς τὸ τοῦ βασιλέως ὄνομα εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Ἴδε, διὰ τὴν ἀπληστίαν σου ἀπαλείφω δεκατέσσαρα· καὶ τῷ ἰδίῳ δακτύλῳ αὐτοῦ ἀπήλειψε, φησί. καὶ διυπνίσθη ταραχθεὶς ὁ αὐτὸς Ἀναστάσιος βασιλεύς, καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος Ἀμάντιον τὸν κουβικουλάριον καὶ πραιπόσιτον διηγήσατο αὐτῷ τὴν τοῦ ὁράματος ὀπτασίαν. ὅστις 409 Ἀμάντιος εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ζῆθι, βασιλεῦ· ἐνύπνιον γὰρ εἶδον κἀγὼ ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ ὅτι ὡς ἑστηκὼς κἀγὼ ἐναντίον τοῦ ὑμετέρου κράτους ὄπισθέν μου ἐλθὼν χοῖρος, ὥσπερ σύαγρος μέγας, καὶ δραξάμενος τῷ στόματι τὴν ἀρχὴν τῆς χλαμύδος καὶ τινάξας κατήγαγέ με εἰς τὸ ἔδαφος τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἀνήλωσέ με κατεσθίων καὶ καταπατῶν. καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς Πρόκλον τὸν Ἀσιανὸν φιλόσοφον, τὸν ὀνειροκρίτην, ὄντα πάνυ ἐπιτήδειον, εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ ὅραμα, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ἀμάντιος· ὁ δὲ ἐσαφήνισεν αὐτοῖς τὴν τοῦ ὁράματος δύναμιν καὶ ὅτι μετὰ χρόνον τελειοῦνται. Ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς Ἀναστάσιος μετὰ τὰς πρώτας αὐτοῦ δωρεὰς πάλιν ἄλλας κατέπεμψε πᾶσι τοῖς ὑποτελέσι τῆς αὐτοῦ πολιτείας. ἔκτισε δὲ καὶ εἰς ἑκάστην πόλιν τῆς Ῥωμανίας διάφορα κτίσματα καὶ τείχη καὶ ἀγωγούς, καὶ λιμένας ἀνακαθάρας καὶ δημόσια λουτρὰ ἐκ θεμελίων οἰκοδομήσας, καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ ἐν ἑκάστῃ παρέσχε πόλει. Καὶ μετ' ὀλίγον χρόνον ἀῤῥωστήσας ἀνέκειτο, καὶ ἀστραπῆς καὶ βροντῆς γενομένης μεγάλης πάνυ, θροηθεὶς ὁ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς Ἀναστάσιος ἀπέδωκε τὸ πνεῦμα, ὢν ἐνιαυτῶν ἐνενήκοντα καὶ μηνῶν πέντε.
