He is slapped, giving you an example of victory, and you do not deign to suffer this from your fellow man who suffers like you? You are ashamed to become an imitator of God, and how will you reign with him and be glorified with him in the kingdom of heaven, not having endured it? For if He too, for your part, had been ashamed to become man for your sake and had left you until now lying in the fall (352) of transgression, would you not have remained, O wretched one, with the unbelievers and the impious in the recesses of Hades? Do you believe that Christ is God? "Yes," he says. If then you believe that He is the God who made heaven and earth, who without being emptied was emptied from the bosom of the Father, who came down to earth from the infinite height of His Godhead and His ineffable glory and became a humble and poor man for your sake, will you, being clay and ash and dust, not deign to come down from your supposedly high throne and be humbled before your brother, who stands below, at least in this visible world, but is perhaps your superior in virtues? Will you not cast off the robe that seems to be splendid, revering his hair-shirt and humility? Will you not disregard all things which are truly a plaything and rather a mask of shamefulness and not a glory of splendor? Will you not become in all things like your own creator and God, being humbled with your brothers? If then you do not endure to be made like Him, you make yourself, though you know it not, greater and more glorious than Him, showing yourself to us as another Annas or Caiaphas or Pilate and tyrant, wishing the Creator of all to stand before you not as one seated with you, but as one of the condemned.

These things, then, are for the rich and rulers and those who sit above others and raise their eyebrows with a disdainful mind. But what of those who have supposedly left everything behind and become poor for the sake of the kingdom of heaven? What then shall we say? Behold, you have become poor, brother, and you have imitated (353) your Master, Christ and God. See therefore Him who is above all the heavens now being with you and walking with you. Behold, you two journey together; someone met you on the way of life, he gave your Master a slap, he likewise gave one to you. The Master does not speak against it and you resist? Yes, he says, for He said to the one who slapped him: "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if well, why do you strike me?" He did not say this as one speaking against it, as you supposed, but because He committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth. And besides, so that it might not be thought that the one who said to him, "Is that how you answer the high priest?", justly struck Him as one who had committed a sin, for this reason, declaring Himself blameless, He uttered this. But we, who are liable for many sins, are not at all like this. For later, having endured things much worse than this, He is found to have said nothing at all; nay rather, He is even shown praying for those who crucified Him. He, being mocked, is not indignant and you are annoyed? He endures spitting and buffetings and scourgings, and you do not deign to endure even a harsh word? He accepts the cross and a dishonorable death and the pains from the nails, and you do not deign to perform the most dishonorable services? And how can you become a sharer in His glory, not deigning to do so? Truly in vain you left (354) your wealth, not having wished to take up the cross with the word of truth, as He commanded; "Sell your possessions and give to the poor," Christ commanded the young man and us with him, "and take up your cross and come, follow Me! ". But you scattered your wealth, yet not deigning to take up the cross, as has been said—which is to eagerly bear the assault of all temptations—you were left behind on the way of life and were wretchedly separated from your most sweet Master and God!
