it becomes comprehensible yet ungraspably by the ineffable union and likewise circumscribable in an uncircumscribable manner. But do not seek these things at all by words or by thoughts, but beg to receive fire, which teaches and shows (342) clearly to those who possess it all these things and things more mystical than these, unspeakably. But hear things more mystical than these, if you wish, child! When it shines, as I said, and drives out the swarm of passions and cleanses the house of your soul, then it is mingled with it unminglingly and is united ineffably, substantially with its substance, whole with whole entirely and little by little it illumines, and sets on fire and enlightens and, how to say it I do not know, the two become one, the soul with the creator and in the soul the creator, alone with the alone, whole, who holds all creation in the palm of His hand. Do not doubt, this one, whole, with the Father and the Spirit is contained in one soul and He embraces the whole soul within Himself. Understand, see, consider these things! For I have told you that the unbearable and unapproachable light for angels holds the soul within, and yet it dwells in the soul and does not consume it at all. Have you known the depth of the mystery? (243) The small man among visible things, a shadow and dust, has God whole in his midst, upon whose finger creation is suspended, and everyone has being and life and movement,

γίνεται ληπτόν δ᾿ ἀλήπτως τῇ ἑνώσει τῇ ἀρρήτῳ καί περιγραπτόν ὡσαύτως ἐν ἀπεριγράπτῳ τρόπῳ. Ταῦτα δέ μή λόγοις ὅλως μηδέ ἐπινοίας ζήτει, ἀλλά πῦρ λαβεῖν ἐξαίτει, ὅ διδάσκει καί δεικνύει (342) ἐναργῶς τοῖς κεκτημένοις ταῦτα πάντα καί τά τούτων μυστικώτερα ἀφράστως. Μυστικώτερα δέ τούτων ἄκουσον, εἰ βούλει, τέκνον! Ὅταν λάμψῃ καθώς εἶπον, καί τό σμῆνος ἐκδιώξῃ τῶν παθῶν καί ἐκκαθάρῃ σοῦ τόν οἶκον τῆς ψυχῆς σου, τότε μίγνυται αὐτῇ ἀμίκτως καί ἑνοῦται ἀπορρήτως, ἐνουσίως τῇ οὐσίᾳ ταύτης ὅλον ὅλῃ πάντως καί κατά μικρόν λαμπρύνει, ἐκπυροῖ τε καί φωτίζει καί, τό πῶς εἰπεῖν οὐκ ἔχω, γίνονται εἰς ἕν τά δύο, ἡ ψυχή μετά τοῦ κτίστου καί ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ ὁ κτίστης μόνος μετά μόνης ὅλος, ὁ συνέχων πᾶσαν κτίσιν ἐν τῇ ἑαυτοῦ παλάμῃ. Μή διστάσῃς, οὗτος ὅλος σύν Πατρί καί τῷ Πνεύματι ἐν μιᾷ ψυχῇ χωρεῖται καί ψυχήν ἐντός ἐκείνου ὅλην συμπεριλαμβάνει. Νόει, βλέπε, σκόπει ταῦτα! Τό γάρ ἄστεκτόν σοι εἶπον καί ἀπρόσιτον ἀγγέλοις φῶς ἐντός ψυχήν κατέχειν, ἐν ψυχῇ οἰκεῖν δέ αὖθις καί μή φλέγειν ταύτην ὅλως. Ἔγνω βάθος μυστηρίου; (243) Ὁ μικρός ἐν ὁρωμένοις ἄνθρωπος, σκιά καί κόνις, ἔχει τόν Θεόν ἐν μέσῳ ὅλον, οὗ ἐν τῷ δακτύλῳ ἀποκρέμαται ἡ κτίσις, καί τό εἶναι πᾶς τις ἔχει καί τό ζῆν καί τό κινεῖσθαι,
