But if, as you yourself now demand, we shall cede the island to you, not only will we have endured the labor and spent the money rashly and in vain, but we shall also leave no hope for the Romans of ever recovering the island; or to seem to be acting unjustly and breaking the treaty whether they prevail, or whether they do not. For all these reasons, he should ask for things that are neither just nor possible, nor could he himself provide them; but what was previously judged by him, to be both possible and advantageous for the Romans and for himself. But when Benedetto said that he had heard all of the emperor’s words and had paid attention to them, but that he was persuaded by none of them, but rather would stick to what had been decided from the beginning, and that he considered no favor fitting for him other than the complete cession of the 1.383 island, “It is not at all surprising,” said the emperor, “if, when someone is deliberating about some matter, it should occur to him to consider such and such things now, and a little later, considering the opposite or better or worse things should appear to him from the circumstances. For which reason it is not right for him now, having heard the arguments addressed to him for the first time, to refuse so unreflectively, but it is necessary, after considering for a second and a third day with his friends, to come thus and report what has been decided. For perhaps joint deliberation with his friends and relatives will find something of what is needed.” But when Benedetto tried to speak against this again, the emperor stopped him, and rising from his chair and saying to him that he would not listen until he came after having deliberated with his friends. Benedetto, then, thus went away home, full of confusion; but on the third day the emperor sent for him, and reminded him of what had been said before and added some other things, making clear his goodwill towards him and how much zeal he had to do well by him. And he advised him to obey him as one who was deliberating for his advantage. But he held to his original opinion and advised the emperor not to labor in vain, nor to attempt to persuade him of anything else. But if he would hand over to him all authority of the island, but if not, then as a second option, he asked him to provide as many triremes as he needed, so that he might arrive in Galata, having put his possessions on board. But it seemed terrible to the emperor, if, the benefaction to him 1.384 not yet having been made clear to all, either he himself was willingly concealing the truth, or certain others who knew nothing about what had happened, they would think that the emperor wished to drive Benedetto from Chios, but was not well-supplied with a plausible excuse, and for this reason, gladly seizing upon the proposal, he was providing the triremes and permitting the departure. For this reason, he again ordered him to deliberate about the matter for another three days, and that it was right not to look to that man’s small-mindedness, but to show the magnanimity and endurance fitting for himself. “For perhaps in them you will be able to deliberate on something of what is necessary.” But Benedetto, adding nothing further, full of anger, withdrew home as if having been wronged in the extreme. But the emperor, vexed at what was happening, inquired of the Romans present, if he was not bestowing a fitting benefaction on Benedetto, who had contributed little or nothing to the war for Chios, or if his demand was just and made with reason. For he himself was not able to comprehend what these words of his meant. The others, then, both blamed Benedetto and condemned his great foolishness; but the grand domestic said, “The irrationality, O emperor, and the madness of Benedetto’s demands everyone knows clearly and they cast the same vote concerning him. For which reason it is not necessary to be meddlesome by examining what he wants so unyieldingly in these matters; 1.385 but to think that he resembles madmen, who know neither what they are saying nor to whom they are making their speeches, but wherever the demon might move them, they utter things unintelligible to all. But so that neither he himself later, nor any other, wishing to obscure the truth, might be able to use falsehood and fabricate things that are not, attaching some supposed wickedness to us, I will say what seems to me must be done, if indeed it should also seem so to you yourself. To Chios now
