a little more than three hundred. But the rest, having set sail, anchored, and on the next day, no longer having good hopes concerning Chios, were returning home. And as all hope was stripped away from Benedetto, he was seized by an epileptic fit and died before the seventh day came. 14. A short time having passed, it happened that the emperor, while staying in Didymoteicho, fell into an acute illness, which the sons of physicians call a cephalic symptom. The physicians, therefore, from the first attack, fearing the acuteness of the disease, did not have good hopes; and the emperor himself suspected from the sudden collapse that he would not die without danger. On the second day after the attack, having summoned the Grand Domestic, he said, "You know how many times, when I attempted to persuade you to be adorned with the imperial insignia, as if you yourself knew something more, you rejected my words, although I was asking for what was beneficial to all; but what you yourself thought was better, these things you took pains to keep inviolable. But now it seems that I, rather than you, have a better grasp of what is expedient. For if all that I myself had asked for had been done, now I would not be in great tumult and confusion, nor would the affairs of the Romans be facing the ultimate dangers. For if it should happen that I now die, overcome by the disease, which is not 1.392 far from expectation, it is uncertain whether my death will not lead you into troubles and disturbances. Therefore I think it is necessary, since the affairs themselves now clearly teach what is needed, to abandon this ill-timed contentiousness and unsuitable opposition; and for you yourself, before my eyes and in the sight of all the Romans who are present, to be adorned with the imperial sandals and my own felt hat, which are considered to be the symbols of imperial power. And if I myself should survive the disease, nothing new will have been done. For those things which I proposed from the beginning and was eager to bring to completion, these will have been accomplished; but if I should depart from among men, that you should undertake the entire leadership of the Romans, and not, on account of anarchy, proceed to seditions and wars, by which they will be destroyed." The emperor, therefore, advised such things and added that, if he did not wish to distress him, and that while he was now sick, he should do what was commanded. But he held no less to his original reasonings and was of the opinion that not even if something should happen would he be established in the guise of an emperor. But the emperor, perceiving that he would not be able to persuade him to change his attire, decided that it was necessary not to contend beyond what was proper, with affairs being in such a very tight spot, but to leave him as successor to the empire by the deeds themselves, and he ordered those present to summon first the leading men of the senate and the others distinguished by noble birth, then in order the others of the Romans who were present. And when they had gathered and 1.393 stood around him, he also ordered the empress Anna to be present. And when she too was present, having strengthened himself as much as he was able, he spoke a few things to them. For he said: "My goodwill, O friends, toward you, and how I would have prized above all else, not only to benefit all of you in common, but also each one of you individually with the greatest things, and how not as a side-task, but with all zeal, using you as my fellow-workers, I set out to accomplish something beneficial for the commonwealth of the Romans, considering it sweeter and more blessed than any life if I should die fighting against the barbarians on their behalf, God himself would know, who knows the unseen and hidden things of men and is the examiner of hearts and minds. But since by judgments which he knows he himself has not judged this to be necessary, but as you see has brought death around to us, persuading all by the deeds themselves that one must not pay attention either to money or to glory or to the other things that are fleeting and perishable, but to be concerned with one thing only, to attend to God throughout one's whole life and for each person to reshape and readjust himself for the life beyond, first I bid you these last farewells, it being uncertain if I shall ever speak to you again, and I ask of you, if any favor for me lies with you, to propitiate the Almighty for me with supplications, for me who has often offended him many times, especially now being in need of this assistance;
