Thus therefore the Creator, having made me thus and of such a kind, led me into a perceptible tent, a bodily one at least (248) and enclosed me in it and secured me, and having brought me down into a perceptible and visible world He again set me to live and to be with those in darkness, me who had been delivered from darkness, and to be confined with them, those in the mire, I mean; or rather to teach these, and to lead them to a full knowledge, of the wounds with which they are surrounded and of the bonds by which they are held. Having given this command, He departed. Therefore, having been left alone, in the former darkness, I mean, I was not content with what I said He had heaped upon me, with unspeakable good things, having renewed me wholly, having made me wholly immortal, having made me wholly divine and having made me a Christ. But the deprivation of Him brought about forgetfulness of all these good things I have spoken of, and I seemed to have been deprived. For this reason, as though ensnared in my former evils I was vexed, and sitting in the midst of the tent, as if shut up in a box or a jar, (249) I was weeping, I was lamenting greatly, seeing nothing at all outside. For I was seeking Him, Him whom I longed for, whom I loved, by the beauty of whose fairness I was wounded, I was inflamed, I was on fire, I was wholly set ablaze. As I was thus spending my time, and thus weeping, and at the same time wasting away and being terribly scourged and crying out grievously,

Οὕτως οὖν με καί τοιοῦτον ἐργασάμενος ὁ κτίστης ἐν σκηνῇ εἰσήγαγέ με αἰσθητῇ, σωματικῇ γε (248) καί ἐνέκλεισεν ἐν ταύτῃ καί κατησφαλίσατό με, καί καταγαγών δ᾿ ἐν κόσμῳ αἰσθητῷ καί ὁρατῷ τε πάλιν ἔθετο βιοῦν με καί συνεῖναι τοῖς ἐν σκότει τόν ἀπαλλαγέντα σκότους, καί καθεῖρχθαι μετ᾿ ἐκείνων, τῶν ἐν τῷ βορβόρῳ λέγω˙ μᾶλλον δέ διδάσκειν τούτοις, εἰς ἐπίγνωσίν τε ἄγειν, ὧν περίκεινται τραυμάτων καί ὧν δεσμῶν κατέχονται. Ἐντειλάμενος ἀπῆλθεν. Ἐγκαταλειφθείς οὖν μόνος, ἐν τῷ πρῴην σκότει λέγω, οὐκ ἠρκέσθην, οἷσπερ εἶπον ὅτι ἐσωρήσατό μοι, ἀγαθοῖς ἀνεκλαλήτοις ὅλον με ἀνακαινίσας, ὅλον με ἀθανατίσας ὅλον με θεοποιήσας καί Χριστόν ἀποτελέσας. Ἀλλ᾿ ἡ στέρησις ἐκείνου λήθν πάντων ἐνεποίει τῶν καλῶν, ὧν εἶπον, τούτων, καί ἐδόκουν ἐστερῆσθαι. ∆ιά τοῦτο ὡς τοῖς πρῴην ἐμπαγείς κακοῖς ἠχθόμην καί καθήμενος ἐν μέσῳ τῆς σκηνῆς, ὥσπερ ἐν θήβῃ ἤ ἐν πίθῳ κεκλεισμένος, (249) ἔκλαιον, ἐθρήνουν σφόδρα ἔξωθεν ὅλως μή βλέπων. Ἐξεζήτουν γάρ ἐκεῖνον, ἐκεῖνον ὅνπερ ἐπόθουν, οὗ ἠράσθην, οὗ τῷ κάλλει ὡραιότητος ἐτρώθην, ἐφλεγόμην, ἐκαιόμην, ὅλος ἐνεπυριζόμην. Οὕτως οὖν διάγοντά με, οὕτω καί δακρύοντά με, ἐκτηκόμενόν τε ἅμα καί δεινῶς με μαστιζόμενον καί βοῶντα κατωδύνως,
