The star of Ares at its zenith to kill a man with a sword, not Venus happening to be with Ares for someone to have relations with another's wife among them, since Ares is certainly at its zenith every 6.10.14 day and the Seres are born at every hour and day. Among the Indians and Bactrians there are many thousands of the so-called Brahmans, who according to the tradition of their ancestors and laws neither murder nor worship idols, they do not taste anything with a soul, they are never intoxicated, not tasting wine and strong drink, they do not participate in any evil, being attentive to God, while the other Indians murder and fornicate and get drunk and worship idols and are carried away in almost 6.10.15 everything according to fate. And there is in the same region of India a certain tribe of Indians, who hunt the foreigners that fall into their hands, sacrifice, and eat them; and neither have the beneficent stars prevented these from committing murder and unlawful marriages, nor have the maleficent ones compelled the Brah6.10.16 mans to do evil. Among the Persians it was the law to marry their daughters and sisters and mothers, and not only in that country and in that region did the Persians practice these unholy marriages, but also as many of them as emigrated from Persia, who are called Magusaeans, practice the same lawlessness, handing down the same laws and customs to their 6.10.17 children by succession. Of whom there are many to this day in Media and in Egypt and in Phrygia and in Galatia. And surely Venus was not found in the terms and houses of Saturn, with Saturn, with Ares bearing witness, in the nativities of all of them. 6.10.18 Among the Geli it is the law for the women to farm and build and do all the manual labor, and to have intercourse with whomever they wish and not to be accused by their husbands nor for any to be called an adulteress, because 6.10.19 all are industrious and have intercourse with all, but especially with foreigners. And the Geli women neither anoint themselves with perfume, nor do they wear dyed garments, and all are barefoot, even though the Geli men adorn themselves with soft garments and in various colors and wear gold and anoint themselves with perfume and not because of any other effeminacy, for they are manly and most warlike and most skilled in hunt6.10.20 ing. And not all the women of the Geli have by lot an unfortunate Venus in Capricorn or in Aquarius, nor do all of their men have the Paphian with Ares in Aries, where those who follow the Chaldeans say the manly and extravagant 6.10.21 are. Among the Bactrians the women use every excellent adornment and every perfume, being served by maidservants and youths more than the men are, going forth on horseback with great ostentation, adorning their horses with much gold and costly stones, and they are not chaste, but have intercourse indiscriminately with slaves and foreigners, having such license, 6.10.22 and not being accused by their husbands, they almost rule over them. And certainly not in every nativity of the women in Bactria is the laughter-loving Aphrodite at her zenith with Jupiter and Ares in her own terms. But in Arabia and in Osroene not only are the adulteresses killed, but even those who are suspected are not 6.10.23 left unpunished. Among the Parthians and Armenians murderers are put to death sometimes by the judges, and sometimes by the blood-relatives of the murdered. And if anyone kills his wife or a childless brother or an unmarried sister or a son or a daughter, he is not accused by anyone, such a law existing in those countries; but among the Greeks and Romans murderers of their own household and kinsmen are sub6.10.24 jected to a greater punishment. In Hatra he who steals something worth an obol is stoned, among the Bactrians he who steals a little is spat upon, among 6.10.25 the Romans he is disciplined with stripes; for such are the laws. From the river Euphrates and as far as the Ocean towards the east he who is reviled as a murderer or as a thief is not very indignant, but he who is reviled as a pederast avenges himself even to the point of murder; among the Greeks even the wise who have male lovers 6.10.26 are not blamed. In the same east, if being insulted
