lest something new be plotted against him and he be deprived of his life by some who thought they would attack the rule of the Romans again, he asked to become a monk, thinking that thus he would escape death, if his grandson should die; and when the protostrator yielded, he put on rags and was renamed Antony from Andronicus. But the emperor Andronicus, being terribly afflicted by his illness and believing that he would soon leave life behind, summoned the physicians and said, "You know clearly all that I myself have discussed with you, desiring to receive the monastic habit, not as one who has already 1.400 completely despaired of life, but even if I had firm hopes of surviving, thinking that it would be well from both perspectives. For if I depart to the majority, it will be a good thing for me to be seen before the impartial judge at that fearful judgment, bearing the habit of repentance; and if I recover from the illness, it is all the better, inasmuch as I will also find a time of repentance to be absolved of my sins. And all that you yourselves promised, confirming your words with oaths that you would not deprive me of such a good thing, now I see the complete opposite happening. For I myself am already little short of resembling the lifeless, and I see you doing everything rather than considering and acting on what is beneficial and dear to me. Therefore, I beg you, not to indulge any longer in this negligence, which is harming me not in some moderate way, but in the most critical matters; but what you did not do before, be eager to accomplish it now before the end comes." So the emperor said such things; and the physicians, groaning loudly and often wishing that they had never been skilled in the art of healing at all, so as to witness such things, permitted the emperor to do whatever he wished concerning himself. And when he heard, he became inspired with joy, and as if he had already achieved some splendid success, he summoned the Grand Domestic and eagerly ordered him to call his spiritual father; but he, knowing nothing of what had happened, inquired what the reason for the summons 1.401 might be. And when he learned, he promised the emperor to do what was commanded, but he rebuked the physicians not moderately and he himself bore it with intolerance. But when much time was spent and the spiritual father did not arrive, he himself urged his arrival and asked the physicians the reason for the delay; and understanding from what was said that they were saying nothing sound, he surmised that the action was being hindered by the Grand Domestic, and summoning him, he reminded him of their friendship for one another from their earliest years and of how never at all throughout their whole lives had either given the other cause for disturbance and scandal. But now he was at a loss as to what motive had moved him so deliberately to wish to send him down to Hades with a grievance against him. "Do not do such evil things to me, O best" he said "of friends, nor destroy for me the hope of salvation, but just as often for the sake of this wretched body you threw yourself with all haste and eagerness into dangers, so now that I am in much greater danger in respect to my soul, stand by me with all eagerness, not only because of our friendship, but also lest you suffer punishment from the judge of all, for having deprived, as far as it was in your power, him of a soul, for whom He himself chose death and the cross. Do not waste the time, which is so necessary, which, once it has now escaped, it will not be possible to find again, but requiring many prayers and no ordinary haste. For I even consider the time which I am spending speaking with you 1.402 the utmost loss." But the Grand Domestic was able to answer nothing, his soul already being overwhelmed by grief; but going outside he groaned bitterly and called upon his friend, and he very nearly gave up his soul in his lamentations; however, he recovered himself again and, clearing his eyes with the water of his tears, was seen tearless by the emperor, as if someone else were suffering. And as the emperor, sending frequent messengers, urged the arrival of the spiritual father, the Grand Domestic, sending for the spiritual father

Ἀνδρόνικος δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῇ νόσῳ συνεχόμενος δεινῶς καὶ ὅσον οὔπω νομίζων αὐτὸν ἀπολείψειν καὶ τὸ ζῆν, τοὺς ἰατροὺς προσκαλεσάμενος «ὑμεῖς» εἶπεν «ἴστε σαφῶς ὅσα τε διειλέχθην πρὸς ὑμᾶς αὐτὸς τοῦ τῶν μοναχῶν ἐφιέμενος σχήματος ἐπιτυχεῖν, οὐχ ὡς ἤδη 1.400 παντάπασιν ἀπηγορευκὼς τὸ ζῆν, ἀλλ' εἰ καὶ βεβαίας ἔχοιμι τοῦ περιέσεσθαι τὰς ἐλπίδας, οἰόμενος ἔχειν ἀμφοτέρωθεν καλῶς. ἄν τε γὰρ ἀπέλθω πρὸς τοὺς πλείους, ἐν καλῷ μοι κείσεται τῷ ἀδεκάστῳ κριτῇ τὸ τῆς μετανοίας ἔχοντα σχῆμα ὀφθῆναι ἐπὶ τῆς δίκης ἐκείνης τῆς φοβερᾶς· ἄν τε περιγένωμαι τῆς νόσου, μᾶλλον βέλτιον, ὅσῳ καὶ καιρὸν εὑρήσω μετανοίας ἀπολύσασθαι τὰ πεπλημμελημένα. ὅσα τε ἐπηγγείλασθε αὐτοὶ, καὶ ὅρκοις ἐπιβεβαιώσαντες τοὺς λόγους μὴ τοῦ τοιούτου καλοῦ ἀποστερήσειν, νυνὶ δὲ τοὐναντίον ἅπαν ὁρῶ γινόμενον. αὐτός τε γὰρ ἤδη ὀλίγον ἀποδέω τοῦ ἀψύχοις ἐοικέναι, καὶ ὑμᾶς πάντα μᾶλλον ἢ τὸ τὰ συμφέροντα καὶ φίλα ἐμοὶ διανοουμένους πράττειν ὁρῶ. διὸ δὴ καὶ δέομαι ὑμῶν, μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖον καταχρήσασθαι τῇ ἀμελείᾳ, οὐ μέτριά τινα, ἀλλ' εἰς αὐτὰ τὰ καιριώτατα βλαπτούσῃ· ἀλλ' ὃ μὴ πρότερον, νυνὶ σπουδάσαι καταπράξασθαι πρινὴ τὸ τέλος ἐπιστῇ.» Βασιλεὺς μὲν οὖν τοιαῦτα εἶπεν· οἱ δὲ ἰατροὶ μέγα ἀνοιμώξαντες καὶ πολλὰ πολλάκις ἐπευξάμενοι, εἰ μηδὲ τὴν ἀρχὴν ἐν ἐπιστήμῃ τῆς θεραπευτικῆς ἐγένοντο, ὥστε τοιαῦτα ἐπιδεῖν, ἐπέτρεπον ὅ, τι ἂν βούλοιτο βασιλέα πράττειν περὶ ἑαυτοῦ. ὁ δὲ ἀκούσας, ἔνθους τε ἐγένετο ὑφ' ἡδονῆς, καὶ ὡς ἤδη λαμπρά τινα εὐτυχηκὼς, τὸν μέγαν δομέστικον μετεκαλεῖτο καὶ μετὰ σπουδῆς ἐκέλευε πατέρα τὸν πνευματικὸν καλεῖν τὸν ἑαυτοῦ· ὁ δὲ τῶν γεγενημένων εἰδὼς μηδὲν, ἐπυνθάνετο τὴν αἰτίαν τῆς κλήσεως ἥτις 1.401 εἴη. ἐπεὶ δὲ μάθοι, βασιλεῖ μὲν ὑπισχνεῖτο τὰ κελευόμενα ποιεῖν, τοῖς ἰατροῖς δὲ ἐπετίμα τε οὐ μετρίως καὶ αὐτὸς ἤνεγκεν οὐκ ἀνεκτῶς. τριβομένης δὲ ἐπιπολὺ τῆς ὥρας καὶ τοῦ πνευματικοῦ πατρὸς οὐ παραγινομένου, αὐτός τε ἐπέσπευδε τὴν ἄφιξιν καὶ τοὺς ἰατροὺς τὴν αἰτίαν τῆς μελλήσεως ἠρώτα· συνεὶς δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν λεγομένων ὑγιὲς μηδὲν αὐτοὺς λέγειν, ἐστοχάζετο παρὰ τοῦ μεγάλου δομεστίκου κωλύεσθαι τὴν πρᾶξιν, καὶ μετακαλεσάμενος αὐτὸν, τῆς τε ἐκ πρώτης ἡλικίας πρὸς ἀλλήλους αὐτὸν ἀνεμίμνησκε φιλίας καὶ τοῦ μηδέπω μηδαμῶς παρὰ πάντα τὸν βίον οὐδέτερον ἑτέρῳ ταραχῆς καὶ σκανδάλου ἀφορμὴν παρεσχηκέναι. νυνὶ δὲ ἀπορεῖν ὅθεν ὁρμώμενος οὕτως ἐξεπίτηδες ἐβουλήθη ἀχθόμενον αὐτῷ εἰς ᾅδην παραπέμψαι. «μὴ δὴ τοιαῦτά με ἐργάσῃ κακὰ, ὦ φίλων» ἔλεγεν «ἄριστε, μηδὲ καταπρόῃ μοι τὴν ἐλπίδα τῆς σωτηρίας, ἀλλ' ὥσπερ πολλάκις ὑπὲρ τοῦ δυστήνου σώματος τουτουῒ πάσῃ σπουδῇ καὶ προθυμίᾳ σεαυτὸν ἐνέβαλες εἰς τοὺς κινδύνους, οὕτω νῦν πολλῷ πλέον κινδυνεύοντος κατὰ ψυχὴν, πρόστηθι πάσῃ προθυμίᾳ, οὐ μόνον διὰ τὴν φιλίαν, ἀλλ' ἵνα μὴ καὶ δίκας ὑπόσχῃς τῷ πάντων κριτῇ, τό γε εἰς σὲ ἧκον ἀποστερήσας αὐτὸν ψυχῆς, ὑπὲρ ἧς αὐτὸς θάνατον εἵλετο καὶ σταυρόν. μηδὲ κατάτριβε τὸν καιρὸν, οὕτως ἀναγκαῖον ὄντα, ὃν αὖθις εὑρεῖν οὐκ ἐξέσται διαφυγόντα νῦν, ἀλλ' εὐχῶν τε πολλῶν δεόμενον καὶ σπουδῆς οὐ τῆς τυχούσης. ἐγὼ γὰρ καὶ ὃν ἀναλίσκω σοὶ διαλεγόμενος χρόνον, ζημίαν 1.402 ἥγημαι τὴν ἐσχάτην.» Ὁ μέγας δὲ δομέστικος ἀποκρίνασθαι μὲν ἴσχυσεν οὐδὲν, τῆς ψυχῆς ἤδη τῇ λύπῃ καταβεβαπτισμένης· ἔξω δὲ ἐλθὼν ἀνῴμωξέ τε πικρῶς καὶ τὸν φίλον ἀνεκαλεῖτο, καὶ μικροῦ μὲν ἐδέησεν ἀφεῖναι καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν ἐπὶ τοῖς θρήνοις· ὅμως δ' ἀνελάμβανέ τε πάλιν ἑαυτὸν καὶ τὰς ὄψεις ὕδατι τῶν δακρύων ἀποκαθαίρων, ὥσπερ ἄλλου πάσχοντος ἀδάκρυτος ὡρᾶτο βασιλεῖ. ὡς δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς συχνοὺς ἀγγέλους ἐπιπέμπων, τὴν τοῦ πνευματικοῦ πατρὸς ἄφιξιν ἐπέσπευδεν, ὁ μέγας δομέστικος πέμψας τὸν μὲν πνευματικὸν
