of Christ, is more grievous than all. And this we will know then, when we fall into that very experience. But may we never suffer this, O only-begotten Son of God, nor ever have any experience of this incurable punishment; for both Gehenna and that punishment are unbearable; yet even if you should name ten thousand Gehennas, you would say nothing comparable to falling from that blessed glory, to being hated by Christ, to hearing, ‘I do not know you,’ to being accused that when we saw him hungry we did not feed him. For it is better to endure ten thousand thunderbolts than to see that gentle face turned away from us, and that sweet eye not enduring to look upon us. For if He so pursued me when I was an enemy, hating Him and turning away, that He did not spare Himself but gave Himself up to death; when after all that I do not deem Him worthy of bread when He is starving, with what eyes, then, shall I look upon Him? Tell me, if someone promised to make you, grown old and living in poverty, suddenly young, and to bring you to the very prime of your life, and to make you exceedingly strong and more handsome than all others, and to give you the kingdom of the whole earth for a thousand years, what would you not choose to do and to suffer for this proposal? But when Christ promises not these things, but things much greater than these, which He has prepared for those who love Him, how much wealth is it not worth giving up? or rather, how many lives is it not worth giving up? But since it is not possible to see these things with bodily eyes, ascend with your reason, and standing above this heaven, look up to that heaven which is higher than this, to the infinite height, to the unapproachable light, to the choirs of angels, and again take hold of the image among us, descending from above, and describe to me the things concerning the king on earth, such as men bearing gold, and a pair of white mules adorned with gold, 63.752 and a chariot welded with gold and with plates waving around it, and dragons fashioned on silken robes, and golden shields having eyes, and horses wearing gold, and golden bridles; and having accurately gathered these things together, from these transfer your thought again to the things above, and consider that fearful day on which Christ will appear. For you will not see then a pair of mules, nor golden chariots, nor dragons and shields, but all of heaven opened, and the only-begotten Son of God descending, not with twenty nor a hundred spearmen escorting him, but with thousands and myriads of angels and archangels; and all things will be full of fear and trembling, with all the people who have ever been, from the time Adam was created until that day, rising from the earth and being caught up; and with Him appearing in such great glory, that the sun and the moon will hide all their light, being outshone by that splendor, and He rendering to each according to his works. But the majority of those who are disposed more irrationally think that it brings some comfort to be punished in Gehenna with everyone else; for indeed this saying is exceedingly cold, to say, ‘As all, so I.’ Consider for me those who are afflicted with gout, who, when they are racked by sharp pain, even if you show them ten thousand suffering worse things, they do not even take it into account. For the intensity of the anguish does not allow the mind to have any leisure to consider others and find comfort. Let us not, therefore, be nourished by these cold hopes. For to receive comfort from the evils of one's neighbor, happens in moderate sufferings; but when the torment is overwhelming and all within is full of a storm, and the soul is no longer able to know itself, from where will it reap comfort? If someone brought you into a theater, where all were sitting arrayed in golden robes, and in the midst of the crowd pointed out another person having his garments and the crown on his head made of only precious stones and pearls, and then he promised you to enroll you in that company, would you not have done everything

Ἀλλὰ μήποτε τοῦτο πάθοιμεν, ὦ μονογενὲς τοῦ Θεοῦ Παῖ, μηδὲ λάβοιμέν ποτέ τινα πεῖραν τῆς ἀνηκέστου ταύτης κολάσεως· ἀφόρητος μὲν γὰρ καὶ ἡ γέεννα καὶ ἡ κόλασις ἐκείνη· πλὴν κἂν μυρίας τιθῇς γεέννας, οὐδὲν τοιοῦτον ἐρεῖς, οἷον τὸ τῆς μακαρίας ἐκπεσεῖν δόξης ἐκείνης, τὸ μισηθῆναι παρὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, τὸ ἀκοῦσαι ὅτι Οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς, τὸ ἐγκληθῆναι, ὅτι πεινῶντα αὐτὸν ἰδόντες οὐκ ἐθρέψαμεν. Καὶ γὰρ βέλτιον μυρίους ὑπομεῖναι κεραυνοὺς, ἢ τὸ πρόσωπον ἐκεῖνο τὸ ἥμερον ἰδεῖν ἀποστρεφόμενον ἡμᾶς, καὶ τὸν γλυκὺν ὀφθαλμὸν οὐκ ἀνεχόμενον εἰς ἡμᾶς βλέπειν. Εἰ γὰρ αὐτὸς ἐχθρὸν ὄντα με καὶ μισοῦντα αὐτὸν καὶ ἀποστρεφόμενον οὕτως ἐδίωξεν, ὡς μηδὲ ἑαυτοῦ φείσασθαι, ἀλλὰ ἐκδοῦναι ἑαυτὸν εἰς θάνατον· ὅταν μετὰ πάντα ἐκεῖνα μήτε ἄρτου ἀξιώσω αὐτὸν λιμώττοντα, ποίοις λοιπὸν αὐτὸν ὀφθαλμοῖς ὄψομαι; Εἰπὲ δή μοι, εἴ τίς σε γεγηρακότα καὶ ἐν πενίᾳ ζῶντα ἐπηγγέλλετο ποιήσειν ἐξαίφνης νέον, καὶ εἰς αὐτὴν ἄξειν τῆς ἡλικίας τὴν ἀκμὴν, καὶ σφόδρα ἰσχυρὸν καὶ ὡραῖον ὑπὲρ πάντας κατασκευάσειν, καὶ βασιλείαν δώσειν τῆς γῆς ἁπάσης ἐπὶ ἔτεσι χιλίοις, τί οὐκ ἂν ὑπὲρ ταύτης εἵλου τῆς ὑποθέσεως καὶ ποιῆσαι καὶ παθεῖν; τοῦ δὲ Χριστοῦ οὐχὶ ταῦτα, ἀλλὰ τὰ πολλῷ μείζονα τούτων ἐπαγγελομένου, ἃ ἡτοίμασε τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτὸν, πόσα οὐκ ἄξιον προέσθαι χρήματα; μᾶλλον δὲ πόσας οὐκ ἄξιον προέσθαι ψυχάς; Ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ σωματικοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς ταῦτα ἰδεῖν οὐκ ἔστιν, ἀνάβηθι τῷ λογισμῷ, καὶ ὑπὲρ τὸν οὐρανὸν τοῦτον στὰς, ἀνάβλεψον εἰς ἐκεῖνον τὸν ἀνωτέρω τούτου οὐρανὸν, εἰς τὸ ὕψος τὸ ἄπειρον, εἰς τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀπρόσιτον, εἰς τοὺς δήμους τῶν ἀγγέλων, καὶ πάλιν ἐπιλαβοῦ τῆς παρ' ἡμῖν εἰκόνος, καταβὰς ἄνωθεν, καὶ ὑπόγραψόν μοι τὰ περὶ τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἐπὶ γῆς, οἷον ἄνδρας χρυσοφοροῦντας, καὶ ζεῦγος λευκῶν ἡμιόνων χρυσῷ καλλωπιζομένων, 63.752 καὶ ὄχημα χρυσοκόλλητον καὶ πέταλα τούτῳ περισειόμενα, καὶ δράκοντας ἐν ἱματίοις σχηματιζομένους σηρικοῖς, καὶ ἀσπίδας χρυσοῦς ἐχούσας ὀφθαλμοὺς, καὶ ἵππους χρυσοφοροῦντας, καὶ χαλινοὺς χρυσοῦς· καὶ ταῦτα συναγαγὼν ἀκριβῶς, ἀπὸ τούτων μετάθες πάλιν ἐπὶ τὰ ἄνω τὸν λογισμὸν, καὶ τὴν ἡμέραν ἐννόησον τὴν φοβερὰν καθ' ἣν ὁ Χριστὸς παραγίνεται. Οὐ γὰρ ζεῦγος ἡμιόνων ὄψει τότε, οὐδὲ ὀχήματα χρυσᾶ, οὐδὲ δράκοντας καὶ ἀσπίδας, ἀλλὰ τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνοιγόμενον μὲν ἅπαντα, κατερχόμενον δὲ τὸν μονογενῆ τοῦ Θεοῦ Υἱὸν, οὐκ εἴκοσιν οὐδὲ ἑκατὸν δορυφορούντων αὐτὸν, ἀλλὰ χιλιάδων καὶ μυριάδων ἀγγέλων τε καὶ ἀρχαγγέλων· καὶ πάντα ἔσται φόβου καὶ τρόμου μεστὰ, τῶν πώποτε γενομένων ἀνθρώπων, ἐξ οὗ γέγονεν ὁ Ἀδὰμ μέχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης, ἀπὸ γῆς ἀνισταμένων καὶ ἁρπαζομένων· καὶ αὐτοῦ μετὰ τοσαύτης φαινομένου δόξης, ὥστε τὸν ἥλιον καὶ τὴν σελήνην ἅπαν κρύψαι τὸ φῶς τῆς αὐγῆς ἐκείνην ὑπερλαμπόμενον, καὶ ἀποδιδόντος ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ. Ἀλλ' οἱ πολλοὶ τῶν ἀλογώτερον διακειμένων παραμυθίαν τινὰ φέρειν νομίζουσι τὸ μετὰ πάντων ἐν τῇ γεέννῃ κολάζεσθαι· καὶ γὰρ σφόδρα ψυχρὸς οὗτος ὁ λόγος, τὸ λέγειν, Ὡς πάντες κἀγώ. Ἐννόησόν μοι τοὺς ὑπὸ ποδαλγίας κατεχομένους, οἳ, ὅταν ὑπὸ δριμείας ὀδύνης κατατείνωνται, κἂν μυρίους δείξῃς χαλεπώτερα πάσχοντας, οὐδὲ εἰς νοῦν λαμβάνουσι. Τὸ γὰρ ἐπιτεταμένον τῆς ἀλγηδόνος οὐ συγχωρεῖ τῷ λογισμῷ σχολήν τινα σχεῖν εἰς τὸ λογίσασθαι ἑτέρους καὶ παραμυθίαν εὑρεῖν. Μὴ τοίνυν ταῖς ψυχραῖς ταύταις ἐλπίσι τρεφώμεθα. Τὸ γὰρ δέξασθαι παραμυθίαν ἐκ τῶν τοῦ πέλας κακῶν, ἐν τοῖς συμμέτροις γίνεται τῶν παθῶν· ὅταν δὲ ὑπερέχῃ ἡ βάσανος καὶ ζάλης ᾖ μεστὰ πάντα τὰ ἔνδον, καὶ μηδὲ ἑαυτὴν εἰδέναι ἡ ψυχὴ λοιπὸν ἔχῃ, πόθεν παραμυθίαν καρπώσεται; Εἴ τίς σε εἰς θέατρον ἤγαγεν, ἔνθα πάντες ἐκάθηντο χρυσᾶς περιβεβλημένοι στολὰς, καὶ ἐν μέσῳ τῷ πλήθει ἕτερόν τινα ἀπέδειξεν ἀπὸ λίθων καὶ μαργαριτῶν μόνων καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ τὸν στέφανον τὸν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς ἔχοντα, εἶτά σε ἐπηγγείλατο εἰς ἐκεῖνον κατατάξειν τὸν δῆμον, ἆρα οὐκ ἂν ἅπαντα ἔπραξας
