running about and zeal to be in possession of something or of a greater office? Where is the contradiction and insubordination and the not wanting to appear second to another? Where is the affection for relatives? Where is the ostentation of the worldly people and rulers who come to us, through whom I, the wretched one, think and seem to become more distinguished than the others? Where is the supposed wisdom of those who are distinguished in the knowledge and wisdom of the world? Where is the conceit and the seeming to be something, when we are nothing? Where then is the versatile tongue and the orations as from a spring? Where then, or rather now, is the wise man, where the scribe, where the debater of this age, that he might come back and we might sit together and take counsel about that dreadful day and hour and, setting in motion every rope - as the saying goes - within ourselves and in the divine Scriptures and searching accurately, we might be taught from there and learn what it is that will have the strength to benefit us then, and that we might choose that with much zeal?
Truly, my beloved brothers, as all Scripture loudly proclaims, great necessity, great fear and (384) trembling will seize in that hour those who are slothful and indolent and lazy like me. But blessed is he, brothers, who now lies beneath all creation, mourning and weeping night and day before God, because he will then be stationed, adorned, at His right hand. Blessed is he who hears these things and not only groans, nor putting it off from day to day runs through the time of his life unprofitably, but who, upon hearing the Lord say, "Repent! ", immediately begins the work. For such a one, as an obedient and grateful servant, will be shown mercy and will not be condemned with the disobedient, and now will be delivered from all the passions, and will become an approved worker of all the virtues, and in the age to come will delight in the ineffable good things of God with all those who from of old have pleased Him, which may we all attain by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Discourse 30. (385)
Concerning repentance and the beginning of a praiseworthy life, how a penitent ought to act each day. In which also is concerning tears along with compunction. My beloved brothers, hear the power of my words and, as it is
good counsel for you, receive it gladly and be eager to do it for our common benefit, both mine and yours. For thus, walking little by little through things that seem small, we ascend, making progress toward the more perfect things, and we become perfect men in Christ.
The aim of the discourse is this: when you leave the church, do not begin to be distracted by vain and unprofitable things, lest the devil come and, finding you occupied with these, just as a crow immediately flies away, snatching the grain of wheat from the field before it is covered by the earth, so he too may snatch the memory of these words of the instruction from your heart and you may again remain light and empty of the saving teaching; but if any of you has been entrusted with a handicraft or a service to do and to work, let him go away with his head bowed (386) and attending to himself, and while working and serving let him say within himself:
“Oh, how many days and times of my life have I, wretched one, passed, being distracted and laughing! Oh, how I have been made vain, hearing until now the divine Scriptures and not
