having him in your heart and you do not forgive him with all your soul and (343) you pray for him from your heart, behold, you have campaigned against Christ, acting contrary to his commandments and you have become his enemy, and you have also destroyed your own soul, sealing and ratifying your previous sins and making them indelible. If someone strikes you again on the right cheek, and then you do not turn to him the other also, but rather strike him back, you have become a soldier and a minister of the adversary Satan, and you have struck not only your brother, but also through him the one who said not to strike, but rather to offer the other to him as well. And if someone takes gold from you or something else secretly or openly, perhaps having borrowed it or having seized it, and then is not willing to give it to you, being in bad circumstances or even in need, and you do not bear it with thanksgiving and without malice, but you drag the one who took it to court and hire advocates, seeking help from men, and you stand in court, vexed, grieving, leading and dragging your brother, using oaths and perjuries and preparing him to swear and to perjure and to lie, which is worse than all the other things, and in addition to this you hand him over to prisons and you do and perform all things, so that you might receive what is owed to you, how are you not openly an enemy of yourself as well?

For he who is commanded to visit those in prison and to minister to them according to his ability, from him who takes your things not to demand them back, and to him who wants to sue you and take your tunic to give him your cloak also, and not only this, but also to lay down his own life unto death for the sake of God's commandment, when he goes to court over lost money, transgressing the command of God, grieving, (344) being vexed and subjecting your brother to prisons, are you not clearly mad, provoking God and warring against him and depriving yourself of eternal life? He, therefore, who wishes to shepherd the flock of Christ and to feed its sheep through the teaching of the things that have been said, so that he might make them well-fed in righteousness and very fruitful, how then can he at the same time worry about fields and take care of possessions, and claim them and ward off those who wish to do them wrong and to mistreat them, and sometimes to approach judges, and at other times to resist with contradictions and falsehood, and sometimes even to become the cause of oaths and perjuries? For it is necessary, even if he himself speaks the truth, that his adversaries lie and swear and openly perjure themselves. And if these things happen in this way, how will they be bearable to a soul that loves God, or how will they be pleasing to God who said: "But I say to you, do not swear at all, but let your 'yes' be 'yes,' and your 'no,' 'no'; for whatever is more than these is from the evil one," and again: "Amen, amen, I say to you that for every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account for it on the day of judgment"?

Do not therefore, if indeed we persuade you, being men, to obey Christ the truth and these words, run after offices and the leadership of others for the sake of human glory and luxury and bodily enjoyment, fearing the judgment of God and that dreadful sentence which God, through the prophet Joel, pronounced against those who unworthily shepherd his sheep: "Thus says, he says, Adonai the Lord: O shepherds of Israel, do the shepherds feed themselves? Do not the shepherds feed the sheep? Behold, you eat the milk and you clothe yourselves with the wool and you slaughter the fatling, and you did not feed my sheep. (345) The weak you have not strengthened, and the sick you have not healed, and the broken you have not bound up, and the one faring badly you have not restored, and the straying you have not turned back, and the lost you have not sought, and the strong you have worn out with toil and you have disciplined them with force and with mockery, and my sheep were scattered because there was no
