becoming intimate with Him, weeping and being purified, sees God and is reconciled to Him and becomes in reality a peacemaker and is deemed worthy to be called a son of God Himself. Such a one, therefore, is able, even when persecuted and beaten and reproached, reviled and insulted, and hearing every evil word spoken against him, to endure with joy and inexpressible exultation, and knowing this, the Lord God has said with authority: “Rejoice and be glad.” But one who has not become such, nor has richly acquired the hypostatic joy within himself, how then will he be able to bear all these things without holding a grudge? In no way!

Therefore, my fathers and brothers, with all diligence let us never cease to examine and investigate ourselves daily and hourly, if possible, but going through all the commandments, as we have said, and in each one of them examining and scrutinizing ourselves, let us see. and if we are found to have fulfilled it, let us give thanks to the Lord God and henceforth let us keep it securely; but if we have not yet remembered it or have not done it, let us run, I beseech you, until we grasp it and become masters of it, lest (405) having despised it, we be called least in the kingdom of heaven. For thus ascending one by one, little by little, as a rung of a ladder, I know well, we shall reach the very city of heaven, in which, as we have said above, our Lord stands leaning over, saying to us all: “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” and having arrived there and having seen Him as is possible for a man and having received from Him the kingdom of heaven, which is the Holy Spirit, we will always have it within us, as the Lord Himself clearly proclaims, and thus we will live as angels on earth, or rather as holy sons of God and in all things imitators of their own Father and God; may it be granted to all of us to enjoy the sweetest vision of Him now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Discourse 32. (406)

Concerning blasphemy. And that he who says that no one in the present generation is able to be in communion with the Holy Spirit, but also he who slanders the energies of the Spirit and attributes them to the adversary,

introduces a new heresy into the Church of God. Brothers and fathers, “every sin,” says the most sacred oracle of the Savior,

“will be forgiven men, but he who has blasphemed against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, neither in this age, nor in the age to come.” Let us ask then what is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is to attribute His energies to the opposing spirit, as Basil the Great says. And how does one do this? Whenever someone, seeing either miracles being done by the Holy Spirit or another divine gift in one of his brothers, I mean, contrition or tears or humility or divine knowledge or a word of wisdom from above or something else bestowed by the divine Spirit on those who love God, (407) says that this is from the deceit of the devil; but also he who says that those who are led by the divine Spirit as sons of God, who do the commandments of their Father and God, are deceived by demons, he too blasphemes against the Holy Spirit who is at work in them, just as the Jews once did against the Son of God; for they saw demons being cast out by Christ and they blasphemed against the Holy Spirit and the shameless ones shamelessly said: “By Beelzebul, the ruler of
