who of these has redeemed the time? The one who hid and escaped the tribulations, or the one who suffered much and endured, or perhaps even died? It is perfectly clear that the one who endured the tribulations and did not refuse death is the one who has redeemed the time, but the other, along with the time, also forfeited the salvation of his own soul.

Therefore, those who think rightly, through the tribulations and trials here, purchase the eternal good things and unceasing joy, and through bodily death, an eternal and immortal life and dwelling with the immortal and eternal God. And just as a merchant, having found many and very precious things being sold for a small price, perhaps for a single obol or coin, with joy and in haste gives it, desiring to receive those precious things, so also the one who strives for the commandment of God chooses to die in joy and haste, as if through a single obol, I mean death, he is about to acquire eternal good things. But it is not so with the lovers of the world, not so with the lovers of life, the lovers of glory, the lovers of the flesh, the lovers of pleasure, and the lovers of wealth; but when they are called to the transgression of a commandment of God by someone who happens to be in a position of worldly preeminence, being unable to bear the indignation and dishonor or aversion and loss of money from him, they betray the eternal and priceless things and foolishly purchase the temporary and corruptible and worthless things, and they destroy their own salvation, that is, eternal life itself; who also prefer to buy comfort for a few days and contrive to be punished for endless ages for the time of their present life. So that we too may not suffer this, let us redeem, I beseech you, the present time, while the festival of our life still lasts, (352) because its days are exceedingly evil, raising up countless waves each day of the salty sin that surges against us, at one time filling our souls with storm and tempest through the well-being of the body and its disordered movements, and at another time, through the visible and invisible enemies that attack us, casting us into despondency and desire and savage anger and stirring up our hearts and through such things making us entirely distant from the kingdom of heaven.

Let us redeem, therefore, the time of our life, giving our intentions and our whole selves to the work of God's commandments alone, to the acquisition and gain of virtue alone, so that in the vessels of the gifts of the Spirit we may arrive at the harbors of God and flee those evil days and that evil report, which sends sinners into the outer fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Let us redeem the prudence of our soul through the contempt of things seen and the study and practice of better things, and we will flee the mind of the flesh, which cannot please God, nor can it snatch us from the enjoyment of temporary things and set our minds on those things which are abiding and eternal; which does not allow the one held by it to live according to God, but always drags the soul down rather to the brutish impulses of the flesh and makes the whole man brutish.

Let us redeem our righteousness, by which we are made familiar with God, through all piety and discernment, distinguishing the unjust from the just and preferring virtue to vice, (353) not giving to the evil one entry or access for our own ruin and destruction, but rendering honor to each worthily, and providing for the body sufficient food and covering, but for the soul, all our strength in divine meditation of thoughts, in prayers, in tears and readings, nourishing and purifying it for the reception of the divine light,

τούτων ἐξηγοράσατο τόν καιρόν; Ὁ κρυβείς καί τάς θλίψεις διεκφυγών, ἤ ὁ πολλά παθών καί ὑπενεγκών ἤ καί ἴσως ἀποθανών; Εὔδηλον ὅτι πάντως ὁ τάς θλίψεις ὑπομείνας καί τόν θάνατον μή παραιτησάμενος οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τόν καιρόν ἐξαγορασάμενος, ὁ ἕτερος δέ σύν τῷ καιρῷ καί τήν σωτηρίαν τῆς ἑαυτοῦ ψυχῆς ἐζημιώθη.

Τοιγαροῦν οἱ ὀρθῶς φρονοῦντες διά θλίψεων καί πειρασμῶν τῶν ἐνταῦθα, τά αἰώνια ἀγαθά καί τήν ἄληκτον εὐφροσύνην ἀξαγοράζονται καί διά τοῦ σωματικοῦ θανάτου τήν μετά τοῦ ἀθανάτου καί αἰωνίου Θεοῦ αἰώνιον καί ἀθάνατον διαγωγήν τε καί κατοικίαν. Καί καθάπερ ἔμπορος, πολλά τινα καί πολύτιμα εὑρών πράγματα, ὀλίγῳ τιμήματι πιπρασκόμενα, ὀβολῷ τυχόν ἑνί ἤ νομίσματι, μετά χαρᾶς αὐτό καί ἐν σπουδῇ ἀποδίδωσι, τά τίμια ἐκεῖνα λαβεῖν ἐφιέμενος, οὕτω καί ὁ ὑπέρ ἐντολῆς Θεοῦ ἀγωνιζόμενος ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ καί σπουδῇ θανεῖν αἵρεται, ὡς δι᾿ ὀβολοῦ ἑνός, τοῦ θανάτου λέγω, τά αἰώνια μέλλων κτήσασθαι ἀγαθά. Οὐχ οὕτως δέ οἱ φιλόκοσμοι, οὐχ οὕτως οἱ φιλόζωοι, οἱ φιλόδοξοι, οἱ φιλόσαρκοι, οἱ φιλήδονοι καί οἱ φιλόπλουτοι· ἀλλ᾿ ἐπάν πρός παράβασιν ἐντολῆς Θεοῦ προσκληθῶσιν ὑπό τινος τῶν ἐν ὑπεροχῇ κοσμικῇ τυγχανόντων, τήν παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἀγανάκτησιν καί ἀτιμίαν ἤ ἀποστροφήν καί χρημάτων ζημίαν ὑπενεγκεῖν μή δυνάμενοι, προδιδοῦσι τά αἰώνια καί ἀτίμητα καί ἐξαγοράζονται ἀφρόνως τά πρόσκαιρα καί φθαρτά καί μηδενός ἄξια, καί ἀπολλύουσι τήν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν, αὐτήν δηλαδή τήν ζωήν τήν αἰώνιον· οἵ καί τήν ἄνεσιν ἐξωνήσασθαι ἐν ὀλίγαις ἡμέραις προτιμῶνται καί εἰς αἰῶνας ἀπείρους κολάζεσθαι πραγματεύονται τῆς παρούσης ζωῆς αὐτῶν τόν καιρόν. Ὅπερ ἵνα μή πάθωμεν καί ἡμεῖς, ἐξαγορασώμεθα, παρακαλῶ, τόν παρόντα καιρόν, ἕως ἔτι ἡ πανήγυρις τῆς ζωῆς ἡμῶν ἵσταται, (352) ἐπειδή αἱ ἡμέραι αὐτῆς λίαν εἰσι πονηραί, μυρία καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ἐπεγείρουσαι τά κύματα τῆς κυμαινομένης καθ᾿ ἡμῶν ἁλμυρᾶς ἁμαρτίας, ποτέ μέν διά τῆς εὐπαθείας τοῦ σώματος καί τῶν ἀτάκτων αὐτοῦ κινημάτων ζάλης καί τρικυμίας πληροῦσαι ἡμῶν τάς ψυχάς, ποτέ δέ διά τῶν ἐπιτιθεμένων ἡμῖν ὁρατῶν καί ἀοράτων ἐχθρῶν εἰς ἀθυμίαν καί ἐπιθυμίαν καί θυμόν ἄγριον ἐμβάλλουσαι καί διεγείρουσαι τάς καρδίας ἡμῶν καί διά τῶν τοιούτων μακράν ὅλους ἡμᾶς ποιοῦσαι τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα οὖν τόν καιρόν ἡμῶν τῆς ζωῆς, διδοῦντες τάς προθέσεις ἡμῶν καί ὅλους ἑαυτούς εἰς μόνην τήν ἐργασίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ, εἰς μόνην τήν κτῆσιν καί τό κέρδος τῆς ἀρετῆς, ἵνα ἐν ἀγωγίμοις τῶν χαρισμάτων τοῦ Πνεύματος εἰς λιμένας Θεοῦ καταντήσωμεν καί φύγωμεν τάς πονηράς ἐκείνας ἡμέρας καί τήν ἀκοήν ἐκείνην τήν πονηράν, τήν τούς ἁμαρτωλούς ἀποπέμπουσαν εἰς τό πῦρ τό ἐξώτερον τό ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καί τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα τήν φρόνησιν ἡμῶν τῆς ψυχῆς διά τῆς τῶν ὁρωμένων καταφρονήσεως καί τῆς τῶν κρειττόνων μελέτης καί ἐργασίας, καί φευξόμεθα τό φρόνημα τῆς σαρκός, ὅ ἀρέσαι Θεῷ οὐ δύναται, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδέ τῆς ἀπολαύσεως τῶν προσκαίρων ἁρπάσαι ἡμᾶς καί πρός τά διαμένοντα καί αἰώνια ἐμβιβάσαι ἡμῶν τήν διάνοιαν· ὅ ζῆσαι κατά Θεόν οὐκ ἐᾷ τόν κρατούμενον ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ, ἀλλά κατασπᾷ τήν ψυχήν ἀεί μᾶλλον εἰς τάς κτηνώδεις ὁρμάς τῆς σαρκός καί ὅλον κτηνώδη τόν ἄνθρωπον ἀπεργάζεται.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα τήν δικαιοσύνην ἡμῶν, δι᾿ ἧς Θεῷ οἰκειούμεθα, διά πάσης εὐσεβείας καί διακρίσεως διακρίνοντες τοῦ δικαίου τό ἄδικον καί προτιμούμενοι τήν ἀρετήν τῆς κακίας, (353) μή διδοῦντες τῷ πονηρῷ εἴσοδον ἤ παρρησίαν εἰς ὄλεθρον ἑαυτῶν καί ἀπώλειαν, ἀλλ᾿ ἀπονέμοντες τήν τιμήν ἑκάστῳ ἀξίως, καί τῷ μέν σώματι παρέχοντες αὐταρκῶς διατροφάς καί σκεπάσματα, τῇ δέ ψυχῇ, τό ὅλον ἡμῶν τῆς δυνάμεως ἐν μελέτῃ θείᾳ τῶν ἐννοιῶν, ἐν εὐχαῖς, ἐν δάκρυσί τε καί ἀναγνώσεσιν αὐτήν διατρέφοντες καί καθαίροντες εἰς ὑποδοχήν τοῦ θείου φωτός,
