delivering and he will turn away ungodliness from Jacob, said the Lord. For to them first the Savior came and first he wished to loose their ungodliness. And he himself said this: "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." And indeed he also sent the apostles to them first, for he said to them: "Do not go into the way of the Gentiles and do not enter a city of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Jacob." 21And this is my covenant with them, says the Lord. These things I both promised to them and have fulfilled. My spirit that is upon you and the words that I have given into your mouth <shall not depart from your mouth> and from the mouth of your seed, said the Lord, from now and for ever. He calls 'mouth' here the apostolic, and 'seed of the apostles' the teachers of their teaching. He promises, therefore, the grace of the spirit to those who have believed in him ............... .... |175 b| ........ until the consummation of the present age to delight in the divine words. Therefore, enjoying this grace, let us praise its giver to whom belongs glory unto the ages of ages. Amen. 19 VOLUME 19 601Be enlightened, be enlightened, O Jerusalem; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. When the holy apostles were once marveling at the size of the stones of the temple, the Lord said: "There will not be left here a stone upon a stone which will not be thrown down." When they asked again: "When will these things be, and what is the sign of your coming?" The Master teaches the two things at the same time, not speaking by division but foretelling both together, both the things concerning the Judaic and the things concerning the universal polity. But nevertheless, those who have understanding distinguish and know which things are fitting for the end of the Jewish worship, and which for the consummation of the world. So also here the prophecy has three hypotheses at the same time: for it prophesies as in a sketch the building of Jerusalem that happened under Cyrus and Darius; and as in an icon painted with many colors and of the truth it shows the types more accurately, the splendor of the holy church; but nevertheless it also reveals the very archetype of the icon, and this is the future life and the polity in the heavens. And the divine Paul taught us this division: "For the law," he says, "having a shadow of the things to come and not the very image of the things." And he calls the things to come that immortal and painless life, the ageless life free from care; and the image of the things the ecclesiastical polity in this life, imitating as far as possible the things to come; and the shadow the law, teaching these things more dimly than it. For painters have the archetype which they paint in imitation, but first they make a sketch, then they apply the colors to the shadow. But if the Jews object, trying to draw all the prophecy to themselves, with God's help we will convict them of falsehood through the prophecy itself. Therefore, these aforementioned sayings fit in some way also the old Jerusalem, which received its former splendor against all hope; but they fit preeminently the church of God, which received the light of the knowledge of God and is clothed with the glory of the Savior. 2For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and a storm cloud upon the nations; but upon you the Lord will appear, and his glory will appear upon you. And this likewise has a double meaning. For he destroyed the dynasty of the Babylonians and delivered it as to a certain darkness by the siege and slavery, but in the things concerning Jerusalem he showed his own power by raising it up and making it conspicuous. And he has done this same thing also for his holy church; for he delivered its persecutors to shame and darkness, but made it conspicuous. And by all his invincible power is proclaimed. 3And kings shall walk by your light, and nations by the splendor of the

Ταύτην δὲ τὴν διαίρεσιν καὶ ὁ θεῖος ἡμ ᾶ ς ἐδίδαξε Παῦλος· «Σκιὰν γάρ» φησιν «ἔχων ὁ νόμος τῶν μελλόντων καὶ οὐκ αὐτὴν τὴν εἰκόνα τῶν πραγμάτων.» Καὶ καλεῖ πράγματα μὲν μέλλοντα τὸν ἀθάνατον ἐκεῖνον καὶ ἄλυπον βίον, τὴν ἀγήρω ζωὴν φροντίδος ἀπηλλαγμένην· εἰκόνα δὲ πραγμάτων τὴν ἐκκλησιαστικὴν πολιτείαν τὴν κατὰ τόνδε τὸν βίον ὡς οἷόν τε μιμουμένην τὰ μέλλοντα· σκιὰν δὲ τὸν νόμον ταύτης ἀμυδρότερον ταῦτα διδάσκοντα. Καὶ γὰρ οἱ ζωγράφοι ἔχουσι μὲν τὸ ἀρχέτυπον οὗ κατὰ μίμησιν γράφουσι, σκιαγραφοῦσι δὲ πρότερον, εἶτα περιβάλλουσι τὰ χρώματα τῇ σκιᾷ. Εἰ δὲ ἀντιτείνουσιν Ἰουδαῖοι εἰς ἑαυτοὺς ἕλκειν πᾶσαν τὴν προφητείαν πειρώμενοι, δι' αὐτῆς αὐτοὺς σὺν θεῷ φάναι τῆς προφητείας ψευδομένους ἐλέγξομεν. Ταῦ τα τοίνυν τὰ προειρημένα ῥητὰ ἁρμόττει μὲν οὕτω πως καὶ τῇ παλαιᾷ Ἱερουσαλὴμ παρ' ἐλπίδα πᾶσαν δε ξα μένῃ τὴν προτέραν λαμπρότητα· ἁρμόττει δὲ διαφερόντως τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκκλησίᾳ τῆς θεογνωσίας δεξα μέ νῃ τὸ φῶς καὶ τοῦ σωτῆρος τὴν δόξαν περικειμένῃ. 2Ὅτι ἰδοὺ σκότος καλύψει γῆν, καὶ γνόφος ἐπ' ἔθνη· ἐπὶ δὲ σὲ φανήσεται κύριος, καὶ ἡ δόξα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ σὲ φανήσεται. Καὶ τοῦτο ὡσαύτως διπλῆν ἔχει ἔννοιαν. Κατέ λυσε μὲν γὰρ τὴν Βαβυλωνίων δυναστείαν καὶ οἷόν τινι σκότῳ τῇ πολιορκίᾳ καὶ τῇ δουλείᾳ παρέδωκεν, ἐν δὲ τοῖς κατὰ τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ τὴν οἰκείαν δύναμιν ἔδειξεν ἀνεγείρας αὐτὴν καὶ περίβλεπτον ἀποφήνας. Ταὐτὸ δὲ τοῦτο καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς ἁγίας αὐτοῦ πεποίηκεν ἐκκλησίας· αἰσχύνῃ μὲν γὰρ καὶ σκότῳ παρέδωκε τοὺς διώκοντας, αὐτὴν δὲ περίβλεπτον ἀπειργάσατο. Καὶ παρὰ πάντων τὸ ἄμαχον αὐτοῦ κηρύττεται τῆς δυνάμεως. 3Καὶ πορεύσονται βασιλεῖς τῷ φωτί σου καὶ ἔθνη τῇ λαμπρότητι τῆς
