Not so are those who love life, who love glory, who love the flesh, who love pleasure and who love wealth; but when they are summoned by one of those in worldly high station to the transgression of a commandment of God, being unable to bear the indignation and dishonor from him, or rejection and the loss of money, they betray the eternal and priceless things and foolishly purchase the temporary and corruptible things that are worthy of nothing, and they destroy their own salvation, that is, eternal life itself; who prefer to purchase comfort for a few days and contrive to be punished for endless ages in the time of their present life. That we too may not suffer this, let us redeem, I beseech you, the present time, while the festival of our life still lasts, (352) since its days are very evil, raising up each day countless waves of the salty sin that surges against us, at one time filling our souls with storm and tempest through the comfort of the body and its disorderly movements, at another time, through the visible and invisible enemies who attack us, casting and stirring up our hearts into despondency and desire and savage anger, and through such things making us entirely far from the kingdom of heaven.

Let us therefore redeem the time of our life, giving our intentions and our whole selves to the work of God's commandments alone, to the acquisition and gain of virtue alone, so that in the cargoes of the gifts of the Spirit we may arrive at the harbors of God and we may flee those evil days and that evil report, which sends the sinners away into the outer fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Let us redeem the prudence of our soul through contempt for visible things and through the study and practice of better things, and we will flee the mind of the flesh, which is not able to please God, but neither is it able to snatch us from the enjoyment of temporary things and to place our mind on the things that abide and are eternal; which does not allow the one held by it to live according to God, but drags the soul ever more down into the beastly impulses of the flesh and makes the whole man beastly.

Let us redeem our righteousness, through which we are reconciled to God, through all piety and discernment distinguishing the unjust from the just and preferring virtue to vice, (353) not giving the evil one entrance or access for our own ruin and destruction, but rendering to each his due honor, and providing the body sufficiently with food and clothing, but for the soul, nourishing and purifying it with all our strength in divine meditation on thoughts, in prayers, and in tears and readings, for the reception of the divine light, God Himself, the sun of righteousness, who will both justify us through the gift of His Holy Spirit and show us to be righteous by His fellowship, making us partakers of the ineffable goods of His kingdom.

Let us redeem the courage of our own souls in much patience and endurance of temptations, according to the voice of the Lord: "In your patience," He says, "possess your souls," that is, by standing with a courageous mind against sin and striking the enemy with the weapons of the Spirit, enduring hardship as good soldiers of Christ in fastings, in vigils, in sleeping on the ground, in prayers, in mourning, in sackcloth and repentance and in unceasing supplications, so that having taken up the crown of victory, we may reign together with Christ for ages.

Let us redeem the sobriety of our body through all self-control and humility, since he who competes lawfully and strives in the stadium of piety is temperate in all things, according to the divine Apostle. For if this

οὐχ οὕτως οἱ φιλόζωοι, οἱ φιλόδοξοι, οἱ φιλόσαρκοι, οἱ φιλήδονοι καί οἱ φιλόπλουτοι· ἀλλ᾿ ἐπάν πρός παράβασιν ἐντολῆς Θεοῦ προσκληθῶσιν ὑπό τινος τῶν ἐν ὑπεροχῇ κοσμικῇ τυγχανόντων, τήν παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἀγανάκτησιν καί ἀτιμίαν ἤ ἀποστροφήν καί χρημάτων ζημίαν ὑπενεγκεῖν μή δυνάμενοι, προδιδοῦσι τά αἰώνια καί ἀτίμητα καί ἐξαγοράζονται ἀφρόνως τά πρόσκαιρα καί φθαρτά καί μηδενός ἄξια, καί ἀπολλύουσι τήν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν, αὐτήν δηλαδή τήν ζωήν τήν αἰώνιον· οἵ καί τήν ἄνεσιν ἐξωνήσασθαι ἐν ὀλίγαις ἡμέραις προτιμῶνται καί εἰς αἰῶνας ἀπείρους κολάζεσθαι πραγματεύονται τῆς παρούσης ζωῆς αὐτῶν τόν καιρόν. Ὅπερ ἵνα μή πάθωμεν καί ἡμεῖς, ἐξαγορασώμεθα, παρακαλῶ, τόν παρόντα καιρόν, ἕως ἔτι ἡ πανήγυρις τῆς ζωῆς ἡμῶν ἵσταται, (352) ἐπειδή αἱ ἡμέραι αὐτῆς λίαν εἰσι πονηραί, μυρία καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ἐπεγείρουσαι τά κύματα τῆς κυμαινομένης καθ᾿ ἡμῶν ἁλμυρᾶς ἁμαρτίας, ποτέ μέν διά τῆς εὐπαθείας τοῦ σώματος καί τῶν ἀτάκτων αὐτοῦ κινημάτων ζάλης καί τρικυμίας πληροῦσαι ἡμῶν τάς ψυχάς, ποτέ δέ διά τῶν ἐπιτιθεμένων ἡμῖν ὁρατῶν καί ἀοράτων ἐχθρῶν εἰς ἀθυμίαν καί ἐπιθυμίαν καί θυμόν ἄγριον ἐμβάλλουσαι καί διεγείρουσαι τάς καρδίας ἡμῶν καί διά τῶν τοιούτων μακράν ὅλους ἡμᾶς ποιοῦσαι τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα οὖν τόν καιρόν ἡμῶν τῆς ζωῆς, διδοῦντες τάς προθέσεις ἡμῶν καί ὅλους ἑαυτούς εἰς μόνην τήν ἐργασίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ, εἰς μόνην τήν κτῆσιν καί τό κέρδος τῆς ἀρετῆς, ἵνα ἐν ἀγωγίμοις τῶν χαρισμάτων τοῦ Πνεύματος εἰς λιμένας Θεοῦ καταντήσωμεν καί φύγωμεν τάς πονηράς ἐκείνας ἡμέρας καί τήν ἀκοήν ἐκείνην τήν πονηράν, τήν τούς ἁμαρτωλούς ἀποπέμπουσαν εἰς τό πῦρ τό ἐξώτερον τό ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καί τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα τήν φρόνησιν ἡμῶν τῆς ψυχῆς διά τῆς τῶν ὁρωμένων καταφρονήσεως καί τῆς τῶν κρειττόνων μελέτης καί ἐργασίας, καί φευξόμεθα τό φρόνημα τῆς σαρκός, ὅ ἀρέσαι Θεῷ οὐ δύναται, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδέ τῆς ἀπολαύσεως τῶν προσκαίρων ἁρπάσαι ἡμᾶς καί πρός τά διαμένοντα καί αἰώνια ἐμβιβάσαι ἡμῶν τήν διάνοιαν· ὅ ζῆσαι κατά Θεόν οὐκ ἐᾷ τόν κρατούμενον ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ, ἀλλά κατασπᾷ τήν ψυχήν ἀεί μᾶλλον εἰς τάς κτηνώδεις ὁρμάς τῆς σαρκός καί ὅλον κτηνώδη τόν ἄνθρωπον ἀπεργάζεται.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα τήν δικαιοσύνην ἡμῶν, δι᾿ ἧς Θεῷ οἰκειούμεθα, διά πάσης εὐσεβείας καί διακρίσεως διακρίνοντες τοῦ δικαίου τό ἄδικον καί προτιμούμενοι τήν ἀρετήν τῆς κακίας, (353) μή διδοῦντες τῷ πονηρῷ εἴσοδον ἤ παρρησίαν εἰς ὄλεθρον ἑαυτῶν καί ἀπώλειαν, ἀλλ᾿ ἀπονέμοντες τήν τιμήν ἑκάστῳ ἀξίως, καί τῷ μέν σώματι παρέχοντες αὐταρκῶς διατροφάς καί σκεπάσματα, τῇ δέ ψυχῇ, τό ὅλον ἡμῶν τῆς δυνάμεως ἐν μελέτῃ θείᾳ τῶν ἐννοιῶν, ἐν εὐχαῖς, ἐν δάκρυσί τε καί ἀναγνώσεσιν αὐτήν διατρέφοντες καί καθαίροντες εἰς ὑποδοχήν τοῦ θείου φωτός, αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἡλίου τῆς δικαιοσύνης Θεοῦ, ὅς καί δικαιώσει διά τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος αὐτοῦ καί δικαίους ἡμᾶς ἀποδείξῃ τῇ συναφείᾳ αὐτοῦ, κοινωνούς τῶν ἀπορρήτων ἀγαθῶν τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ ἐργαζόμενος.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα τήν ἀδρίαν τῶν ἰδίων ψυχῶν ἐν ὑπομονῇ πολλῇ καί καρτερίᾳ τῶν πειρασμῶν κατά τήν τοῦ Κυρίου φωνήν· «Ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν, φησί, κτήσασθε τάς ψυχάς ὑμῶν», ἀνδρείῳ δηλονότι φρονήματι κατά τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἱστάμενοι καί τόν πολέμιον βάλλοντες τοῖς ὅπλοις τοῦ Πνεύματος, κακοπαθοῦντες ὡς καλοί στρατιῶται Χριστοῦ ἐν νηστείαις, ἐν ἀγρυπνίαις, ἐν χαμευνίαις, ἐν εὐχαῖς, ἐν πένθει, ἐν σάκκῳ καί μετανοίᾳ καί ἀενάοις δεήσεσι, ἵνα τόν στέφανον τῆς νίκης ἀράμενοι εἰς αἰῶνας συμβασιλεύσωμεν τῷ Χριστῷ.

Ἐξαγορασώμεθα τήν σωφροσύνην τοῦ σώματος ἡμῶν διά πάσης ἐγκρατείας καί ταπεινώσεως, ἐπειδή ὁ νομίμως ἀθλῶν καί ἀγωνιζόμενος ἐν τῷ σταδίῳ τῆς εὐσεβείας πάντα ἐγκρατεύεται κατά τόν θεῖον Ἀπόστολον. Ἐάν γάρ ταύτην
