For this reason physicians also take many measures, so that the patient may bear the incision gently, and they apply it as kindly as possible, yielding a little, and then allowing him to take breath. So also we must make our reproofs, that they who are reproved may not start away. Even if it is necessary to be insulted, then, or to be struck, let us not refuse. For those who are being cut, cry out ten thousand things against those who are cutting them; but they look to none of these things, but only to the health of the sick. So then here also we must do all things that the reproof may be useful, bearing all things while looking to the reward that is laid up. Bear, he says, one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Thus then, both by reproving and by bearing with one another, we will be able to complete the building of Christ; and thus you will make our labor light for us, by assisting us in all things and lending a hand and becoming sharers and partners, both of one another's 63.213 salvation, and each of his own. Let us endure, then, both bearing one another's burdens, and reproving 63.214 one another, that we may obtain the good things promised to us, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
HOMILY 31. Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the
Lord. 1. There are many things that characterize Christianity, but more than all and better than all are love for one another and peace. For this reason Christ also says: My peace I give to you; and again, By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. For this reason Paul now also says: Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, that is, reverence, without which no one will see the Lord. Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God. Just as when a large company is traveling a certain long road, see, he says, that no one has been left behind; for I do not seek this only, that you should arrive, but that you should also watch over others. Lest anyone, he says, fall short of the grace of God. He calls the good things to come the grace of God: the evangelical faith, the best way of life; for all things are of the grace of God. Do not, then, say to me that it is one person who is perishing; Christ died for one. For one Christ died, and you do not care? Looking carefully, he says; that is, searching carefully, visiting, learning, which is the case with the sick, and examining through all things, [learning]. Lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble. This is found in Deuteronomy; and he took it from a metaphor of plants. Lest any root, he says, of bitterness; which he also says, writing elsewhere, A little leaven leavens the whole lump. Not for that person's sake alone do I wish this, he says, but also because of the harm that comes from it. That is, if there is any such root, do not allow any shoot to come up, but let it be cut out, so that it may not bear its proper fruits, so that it may not also pollute and defile the others. For lest, he says, any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled. And he rightly called sin bitter; for truly nothing is more bitter than sin; and they know this who after the deed are consumed by their conscience, who endure much bitterness; for being most bitter it perverts the reasoning faculty itself. Such is the nature of what is bitter; it is useless. And he said well, A root of bitterness. He did not say, A bitter root, but, of bitterness; for a bitter root can bear sweet fruits, but a root and source and substance of bitterness can never bear sweet fruit; for all its fruits are bitter, it has nothing sweet, all are bitter, all are unpleasant, all are full of hatred and abomination. And by it, he says, many are defiled. That is, that this may not happen, cut out the licentious. Lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one meal sold his birthright.
