they came to be, but they will not see eternal life. 13And the glory of Lebanon shall come to you, with cypress and pine and cedar together, to glorify my holy place, and I will glorify the place of my feet. It is likely that these things also happened in the case of the former temple and that they long ago transported wood from |177 a| Lebanon. But I think that Lebanon is called the metropolis of the Jews; for I have often shown this. "For," he says, "the glory of Lebanon was given to it," that is, to the desert, "and the honor of Carmel." And here the prophetic word foretold that the glory of Lebanon, that is, the Jewish eminence, which the grace of the Holy Spirit had bestowed on them, would be transferred to the church. And one would not be wrong to call the holy prophets cypresses and pines and cedars, having a difference according to the measure of grace; "for," he says, "the righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, he shall be multiplied like the cedar in Lebanon." And now all of these offer prophetic teaching to the church of God. 14And the sons of those who humbled you and provoked you will come to you in fear, and all those who provoked you will worship at the tracks of your feet. The Babylonians did not worship Jerusalem, but most of the nations worship the church of God, and especially their sons. For when those received the end of life, these, having learned the truth, offer reverence to the Savior, making their worship in his houses of prayer. And you shall be called the city of the Lord, Zion of the Holy One of Israel, 15because you became forsaken and hated, and there was no one to help you. And indeed Jerusalem received another name; for the Roman emperors called it Aelia. How then is the truthfulness of the prophecy shown, unless one understands Zion more spiritually? And I will make you an eternal exultation, a joy for generations of generations. How does this fit the temple of the Jews, which received desolation four hundred or even more years ago? 16And you shall suck the milk of nations, and you shall eat the wealth of kings, and you shall know that I am the Lord who saves you and the God of Israel who redeems you. From which kings did the old Jerusalem, after the return, receive wealth? Or from which nations did it suck the abundance of good things like milk? But I think it has become clear even to the very shameless that the church of God shows the truth of the prophecy; for it continuously receives both royal gifts and the offerings from the nations, and having received them, praises their cause. Then it shows also the magnificence of the gifts. 17And instead of bronze I will bring you gold, and instead of iron I will bring you silver, and instead of wood I will bring you bronze, and instead of stones, iron. And it is possible to see the truth of this prophecy in the buildings of the houses of prayer; for they shine, adorned with gold and silver, not to fulfill a need of God but to show the ambition of the pious. And I will give your rulers in peace and your overseers in righteousness, 18and injustice will no longer be heard in your land, nor ruin and misery in your borders. Everyone will see a truer outcome of these things in the future life; for that life is free from injustice, that life is adorned with the highest righteousness, that life is truly without misery and freed from cares. But one might find these things also in the church of God as in a type; for it is freed from the error of idols, and it praises the God of all continuously, and its leaders care for the wronged as much as possible. But your walls shall be called salvation, and your gates, carvings. Aquila translated "carving" as "hymn," Theodotion as "boast," and Symmachus as "praise." For the spiritual precincts of the church provide salvation to those who have believed, and its gates are filled with praise and hymns. 19And the sun will no longer be for you a light by day, nor will the rising of the moon light your night; there will be
