for God will be your everlasting light, and God your glory. 20For your sun will not set, and your moon will not wane; for the Lord will be your |177 b| everlasting light. And the future life has this precisely; for it needs neither moon nor sun; for it has the ineffable light of God itself. Of this, believers even now enjoy it as in a type; for being enlightened by this, they travel the unerring path. And the days of your seed will be fulfilled. 21And all your people <will be righteous> forever, and they will inherit the land. And he foretold these things concerning the future life; for it has the unchangeable nature of the mind, it is adorned with eternal righteousness, it is free from sin, it has neither one who dies untimely nor an old man but unending life, in it the worthy inherit the land of the living. “For,” he says, “there will be a new heaven and a new earth.” Guarding the shoot of my planting, the work of my hands for glory. But Symmachus has it thus: “The shoot of my planting, the work of my hands, that it may be glorified,” and Theodotion thus: “The shoot of his planting will glorify the works of his hands.” And through these, therefore, and through the Seventy, we find the cause of the things spoken and, as it were, the planter to be the God of all; for he himself planted his church, he himself guards it as it sprouts and receives the glory that comes from it. 22The few will become thousands, and the least a great nation; I the Lord will gather them in due time. These things he also said in the holy gospels: “For he will send his angels and they will gather his elect from the ends of the heavens to their ends.” Then he will also assign the dwelling places in the heavens to each according to his worth, then those who are first among them will lead those who are divided into companies and ways of life. Having thus concluded these things, he again transfers the prophecy to the Lord Christ, who during the present life has granted these things to the church and has promised the future commonwealth. 611The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for which reason the Lord has anointed me. We do not need many proofs when interpreting this prophecy; for the Lord himself has made it clear to us. For having entered into the synagogue and taken this book, then having unrolled it and read this prophecy, he said to those who were listening: “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your ears” and he showed plainly that it was he who spoke these things about himself through the prophet. And he was anointed with the all-holy Spirit not as God but as man. And we have already shown this many times in what has gone before. And we have found it written in this book: “Jacob my servant, I will help him, Israel my chosen one, my soul has accepted him; I will put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations,” and again: “A rod shall come forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise from the root. And the Spirit of God will rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and piety, the spirit of the fear of God will fill him.” He himself therefore says here: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for which reason the Lord has anointed me. And he states the reasons for the anointing: He has sent me to preach good news to the poor. For the nature of men has fallen into the utmost poverty, and especially the nations that serve idols. To heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind. He calls all men these things: poor, as having lost the heavenly wealth; brokenhearted, as having corrupted their reason; blind, as having been ignorant of God and having worshiped creation; captives, as having deserted to the tyrant and having fallen from their former freedom. 2To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of recompense for our God. For not only did he grant us the forgiveness of sins and deliver us from the tyranny of the devil and show us the divine light, but he also promised the future life and threatened the just judgment.

Καὶ τοῦτο ἀκριβῶς ὁ μέλλων ἔχει βίος· ἐκεῖνος γὰρ οὔτε σελήνης οὔτε ἡλίου χρῄζει· αὐτὸ γὰρ ἔχει τοῦ θεοῦ τὸ ἄρρητον φῶς. Τούτου δὲ ὡς ἐν τύπῳ καὶ νῦν οἱ πιστεύοντες ἀπολαύουσιν· ὑπὸ γὰρ τούτου φωτιζόμενοι τὴν ἀπλανῆ πορείαν ὁδεύουσιν. Καὶ ἀναπληρωθήσονται αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ σπέρματός σου. 21Καὶ ὁ λαός σου πᾶς <δίκαιος> δι' αἰῶνος, καὶ κληρονο μήσουσι τὴν γῆν. Καὶ ταῦτα περὶ τοῦ μέλλοντος προηγό ρευσε βίου· ἐκεῖνος γὰρ ἔχει τῆς γνώμης τὸ ἄτρεπτον, ἐκεῖνος τῇ αἰωνίῳ δικαιοσύνῃ κεκόσμηται, ἐκεῖνος ἁμαρτίας ἐλεύθερος, ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἔχει ἄωρον οὐδὲ πρεσβύτην ἀλλὰ ζωὴν ἀτελεύτητον, ἐν ἐκείνῳ κληρονομοῦσι τὴν γῆν τῶν ζώντων οἱ ἄξιοι. «Ἔσται γάρ» φησιν «ὁ οὐρανὸς καινὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ καινή.» Φυλάσσων τὸ βλάστημα τῆς φυτείας μου, ἔργον χειρῶν μου εἰς δόξαν. Ὁ δὲ Σύμμαχος οὕτως· «Βλαστὸς τῆς φυτείας μου ἔργον χειρῶν μου εἰς τὸ ἐνδοξασθῆναι», ὁ δὲ Θεοδοτίων οὕτως· «Βλαστὸς τῆς φυτείας αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν δοξάσει.» Καὶ διὰ τούτων τοίνυν καὶ διὰ τῶν Ἑβδομήκοντα αἴτιον τῶν εἰρημένων κ αὶ οἱονεὶ φυτουργὸν εὑρίσκομεν τὸν τῶν ὅλων θεόν· αὐτὸς γὰρ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν ἐφύτευσεν, αὐτὸς δι αφυλάττει βλαστήσασαν καὶ τὴν ἐντεῦθεν προσγινομένην δέχεται δόξαν. 22Ὁ ὀλιγοστὸς ἔσται εἰς χιλιάδας καὶ ὁ ἐλάχιστος εἰς ἔθνος μέγα· ἐγὼ κύριος κατὰ καιρὸν συνάξω αὐτούς. Ταῦτα καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἱεροῖς εὐαγ γελίοις ἔφη· «Ἀποστελεῖ γὰρ τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ καὶ συνάξουσι τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς αὐτοῦ ἀπ' ἄκρων οὐρανῶν ἕως τῶν ἄκρων αὐτῶν.» Τότε καὶ τὰς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἀποδώσει μονὰς πρὸς τὴν ἀξίαν ἑκάστῳ, τότε τῶν εἰς συμμορίας καὶ βίους ἡγήσονται διαιρουμένων οἱ τούτων πρωτεύοντες. Οὕτω ταῦτα συμπεράνας πάλιν εἰς τὸν δεσπότην Χριστὸν μεταφέρει τὴν πρόρρησιν, ὃς κατὰ τὸν παρόντα βίον ταῦτα τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ δεδώρηται καὶ τ ὴν μέλλουσαν πολιτείαν ὑπέσχετο. 611Πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπ' ἐμέ, οὗ εἵνεκεν ἔχρισέ με κύριος. Οὐ δεόμεθα πολλῶν ἀποδείξεων ταύτην ἑρμηνεύοντες τὴν προφητείαν· αὐτὸς γὰρ ἡμῖν ταύτην σαφῆ πεποίηκεν ὁ δεσπότης. Εἰς γὰρ τὴν συναγωγὴν εἰσελθὼν καὶ τόδε τὸ βιβλίον λαβών, εἶτα ἀναπτύξας καὶ τήνδε τὴν προφητείαν ἀναγνοὺς ἔφη πρὸς τοὺς ἀκούοντας· «Σήμερον ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ αὕτη ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ὑμῶν» καὶ ἔδειξεν ἄντικρυς ἑαυτὸν διὰ τοῦ προφήτου περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα φθεγξάμενον. Ἐχρίσθη δὲ τῷ παναγίῳ πνεύματι οὐχ ὡς θεὸς ἀλλ' ὡς ἄνθρωπος. Καὶ ἤδη δὲ ἐν τοῖς ἔμπροσθεν τοῦτο πολ λάκις ἐδείξαμεν. Εὕραμεν δὲ ἐν τῷδε τῷ βιβλίῳ κείμενον· «Ἰακὼβ ὁ παῖς μου ἀντιλήψομαι αὐτοῦ, Ἰσραὴλ ὁ ἐκλεκτός μου προσεδέξατο αὐτὸν ἡ ψυχή μου· θήσω τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐπ' αὐτόν, κρίσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐξοίσει», καὶ πάλιν· «Ἐξελεύσεται ῥάβδος ἐκ τῆς ῥίζης Ἰεσσαί, καὶ ἄνθος ἐκ τῆς ῥίζης ἀναβήσεται. Καὶ ἐπαναπαύσεται ἐπ' αὐτὸν πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ, πνεῦμα σοφίας καὶ συνέσεως, πνεῦμα βουλῆς καὶ ἰσχύος, πνεῦμα γνώσεως καὶ εὐσεβείας, πνεῦμα φόβου θεοῦ ἐμπλήσει αὐτόν.» Αὐτὸς τοίνυν ἐνταῦθά φησιν· Πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπ' ἐμέ, οὗ εἵνεκεν ἔχρισέ με κύριος. Καὶ τὰς αἰτίας λέγει τῆς χρίσεως· Εὐαγγελίσασθαι πτωχοῖς ἀπέσταλκέ με. Εἰς ἐσχάτην γὰρ πτωχείαν ἐξέ πεσε τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἡ φύσις, διαφερόντως δὲ τὰ ἔθνη τοῖς εἰδώλοις δουλεύοντα. Ἰάσασθαι τοὺς συντετριμμένους τῇ καρδίᾳ, κηρύξαι αἰχμαλώτοις ἄφεσιν καὶ τυφλοῖς ἀνάβλε ψιν. Ταῦτα πάντα τοὺς ἀνθρώπους καλεῖ· πτωχοὺς μὲν ὡς τὸν οὐράνιον ἀπολέσαντας πλοῦτον, συντετριμμένους δὲ τὴν καρδίαν ὡς τὸ λογικὸν διαφθείραντας, τυφλοὺς δὲ ὡς θεὸν ἀγνοήσαντας καὶ τῇ κτίσει λατρεύσαντας, αἰχμαλώτους δὲ ὡς πρὸς τὸν τύραννον αὐτομολήσαντας καὶ τῆς προτέρας ἐκπεσόντας ἐλευθερίας. 2Καλέσαι ἐνιαυτὸν κυρίου δεκτὸν καὶ ἡμέραν ἀνταπο δόσεως τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν. Οὐ γὰρ μόνον ἡμῖν τὴν τῶν ἁμαρτη μάτων ἄφεσιν ἐδωρήσατο καὶ τῆς τοῦ διαβόλου τυραννίδος ἀπήλλαξε καὶ τὸ θεῖον ὑπέδειξε φῶς, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν μέλλουσαν ἐπηγγείλατο βιοτὴν καὶ τὴν δικαίαν ἠπείλησε κρίσιν.
