speaking piously or not opposing what was said by us, we thus received them, neither entrusting to ourselves the entire judgment concerning them, but following the votes concerning them already brought forth by our Fathers. For I, having received letters from the most blessed Father Athanasius, the bishop of Alexandria, which I both have in my hands and present to those who seek them, in which he clearly declared that if anyone from the Arian heresy wished to convert, confessing the faith of Nicaea, we should receive him, making no distinction concerning him, and all the bishops of Macedonia and Achaia sharing this doctrine with me, thinking it necessary to follow so great a man because of the trustworthiness of those who legislated, and at the same time desiring to receive the reward of peacemaking, I enrolled those confessing this faith in the portion of those in communion. 204.7 But it is more just that our affairs be judged not by one or two of those who do not walk uprightly toward the truth, but by the multitude of bishops throughout the world united with us by the grace of the Lord. Let there be an examination of Pisidians, Lycaonians, Isaurians, both Phrygias, as much of Armenia as is your neighbor, Macedonians, Achaeans, Illyrians, Gauls, Spains, all of Italy, Sicilians, Africans, the sound part of Egypt, whatever remnant of Syria; who both send letters to us and in turn receive them from us. From whom it is possible for you to learn both from the letters brought from there and to be taught from those sent in return from here to them that we are all of one soul, thinking the one thing. Therefore let him who flees communion with us not escape your precise notice, tearing himself away from the whole Church. Look around, brothers, with whom you have communion; since if you are not received by us, who then will recognize you? Do not lead us into the necessity of resolving something somber concerning the Church most dear to us. Do not make me—groaning by myself and lamenting in my heart the evil of the time, that when there is no cause, these greatest of the Churches, which from of old held the rank of sisters to one another, are now divided—do not make me lament these things to all those in communion together. Do not force me to release words which until now I have kept hidden within myself with the bridle of reason. It is better for us to be out of the way, and for the Churches to be of one mind with one another, than for so great an evil to be brought upon the peoples of God through our childish small-mindedness. Ask your fathers and they will tell you that, even if the dioceses seemed to be divided by the position of the place, yet in mind they were one and were governed by one opinion. Frequent were the interminglings of the people, frequent the visits of the clergy, and for the shepherds themselves there was so much love for one another that each of them used the other as a teacher and guide in matters concerning the Lord.
205.t TO BISHOP ELPIDIUS 205.1 Again we have sent our beloved fellow presbyter Meletius
to your Love, conveying our greetings. Whom, although we had decided to spare him on account of the weakness which he voluntarily brought upon himself by enslaving the flesh for the sake of the Gospel of Christ, nevertheless, judging it fitting for us ourselves to address you through such men, who are able to easily supply on their own whatever escapes the letter and to become, as it were, a living letter for both the one writing and the one receiving, and fulfilling his own longing which he always has for your Perfection since he has come to experience the good things in you, we have now also entreated him to come to you, through whom we both fulfill the duty of a visit and
