it is right for you, give me my wages or refuse,” and again in another prophet, “and they gave the silver, the price of the one who was priced, and he said, cast it into the foundry and see if it is approved, as I was approved by the sons of Israel.” 8. And how many things can be gathered from the divine scripture concerning the things accomplished in our Lord, not according to Judas's action toward the good, but according to the handing over of our savior and Lord Jesus Christ the son of God for us, not by necessity but from his own choice, and the economy of the cross for our salvation. But I know I am bringing forward a great mass of testimonies, 2.71 as another prophet says again, “Let his dwelling become desolate and let another take his office” *, who “falling headlong, burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out” and in the end, using a noose † he showed that he had completely ruined his own salvation, by falling away from hope through his disordered and rash plot against his master and for the sake of avarice leading to denial of God *; so also the apostles appointed Matthias in his place into their number, saying, “from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” And what place is this other than the one the Savior declared for him, saying that he is a son of perdition? For this place was set apart for him, the place of perdition, where he received a portion instead of a portion and instead of an apostolic office, the place of perdition. But thinking that what has been said about this is sufficient, let us go in order to another, O beloved, again exposing the crooked and beastly and venom-spitting teachings of those among the rest who have been driven mad for the sake of the ruin of the world by a counterfeit diabolical inspiration, for having exposed the mind of such people who desire what is worse, a mind resembling the species of the blistering beetle, and having crushed it, since it is harmful, in the power of God, let us turn our mind to the investigation of the others, and let us call upon God as our helper, O children of Christ.
Against Sethians ˉιˉθ, and in the sequence ˉλˉθ. 1. The Sethians, again, is another heresy so called, but this is not found everywhere, nor the one before it, the so-called Cainites; 2.72 and perhaps by now most of these have been rooted out from the world. For that which is not from God will not stand, but for a time it flourishes, but it does not remain continually for all time. But perhaps I think I have encountered this heresy in the land of the Egyptians, for I do not remember precisely the land in which I met them; and some things about it we have learned by nature of the account, by personal observation, and other things we have learned from writings about it. For these Sethians pride themselves on tracing their lineage from Seth the son of Adam, and they glorify him and attribute to him all things that are of virtue *, both the proofs of virtue and of righteousness and all such things that exist. But not only this, but they also call him Christ and affirm that he is Jesus. And they teach their doctrine thus, that, they say, all things came to be from angels and not from the power above. 2. For these speak in harmony with the first heresy of the Cainites in this part; that two men came into being immediately from the beginning and from the two were Cain and Abel, and that the angels, being at variance concerning these, came to war with one another, and thus they caused Abel to be killed by Cain; for there was strife among the angels who were contending about the races of men, * of these two, the one who begot Cain and the one who begot Abel. and that the one above had prevailed
