he does, and slandering teachers of truth for an ambush of the undiscerning, he is also named devil. And for our unfailing teacher to say that he and his angels along with the deceived sinners go away into the lower darkness, has some such meaning. The evil one, having been allotted a constitution that rejoices in darkness, is pleased having descended with his fellow-servant angels into the darkness of Tartarus; for darkness is friend to fire. But the souls of men, being drops of pure light, being drunk up by a substance of a foreign fire and not having the nature to die, are punished according to their deserts. But if the leader of evil, being a man, is not sent into the darkness because he does not rejoice in it, then his constitution which rejoices in evils is able to be re-compounded into a good purpose, and thus he will be judged to be good, all the more for this reason, that although he was allotted a constitution that rejoices in evils, on account of his fear of God he did nothing contrary to what seemed good to the law of God. And did not the Scripture mystically foreshow this—the rod of the high priest Aaron becoming a serpent and again being turned back into a rod—for the later re-compounding of the transformation of the evil one? And after Lazarus, Josephus (he too one of the followers) said: You have said all things right<ly. But now> grant me, who wishes to learn this, why when the same words are <preached> to all, some are persuaded, while others disobey. And Peter: For words are not, he said, incantations, so that anyone who hears them should certainly believe. But in that some are persuaded and others are not, free will is wisely shown. When he said these things, we all gave thanks. And indeed, as we were about to feast, someone ran up and said: Appion the oft-victorious has just arrived from Antioch with Annoubion and is being entertained at Simon's. And the father, hearing this and rejoicing, said to Peter: If you permit me, I shall go to greet Appion and Annoubion, who have been friends of mine from my earliest years. For perhaps I shall persuade Annoubion to discuss with Clement about genesis. And Peter: I permit it, he said, and I praise you for fulfilling the duties of friendship, only understand that by the providence of God all things are converging from every side for your full assurance, bringing about the fitting harmony. And I said this because of the visit of Annoubion, which has become useful to you. And the father: Truly I perceive that this is so. And having said these things, he went to Simon. But we who were with Peter, inquiring in turn through the whole night, on account of both the pleasure and joy of what was said, being sober we stayed awake all night. And now as the night was somehow dawning, Peter looked at me and my brothers and said: I am perplexed as to what your father decided. And as he was saying this, the father arrived on the spot, finding Peter discussing him with us; and seeing him despondent, he greeted him and apologized for the reason he had slept outside. But we, looking at him, were astonished, seeing the form of Simon, but hearing the voice of our father Faustus. And indeed, as we fled from him and loathed him, the father was amazed at being treated by us so harshly and with hostility. But only Peter, seeing his natural form

Καὶ δὴ μέλλουσιν ἡμῖν ἑστιᾶσθαι ὑπεισέδραμέ τις λέγων· Ἀππίων ὁ πλειστονίκης σὺν Ἀννουβίωνι ἧκεν ἀρτίως ἀπὸ Ἀντιοχείας καὶ ξενίζεται παρὰ Σίμωνι. ὁ δὲ πατὴρ ἀκούσας καὶ χαρεὶς ἔφη Πέτρῳ· Eἴ μοι ἐπιτρέπεις, πορεύομαι προσαγορεύσων Ἀππίωνα καὶ Ἀννουβίωνα ἐκ πρώτης ἡλικίας φίλους μοι γεγενημένους. τυχὸν γὰρ Ἀννουβίωνα πείσω Κλήμεντι δια- λεχθῆναι περὶ γενέσεως. καὶ ὁ Πέτρος· Ἐπιτρέπω, ἔφη, καὶ ἐπαινῶ τὰ φίλων σε πληροῦντα μέρη, πλὴν ἐννόει μοι ὡς κατὰ πρόνοιαν θεοῦ πανταχό- θεν συντρέχει τὰ πρὸς τὴν σὴν πληροφορίαν οἰκείαν ἀποτελοῦντα τὴν ἁρμο- νίαν. τοῦτο δὲ εἶπον διὰ τὴν Ἀννουβίωνος χρησίμως σοι γενομένην ἐπιδημίαν. καὶ ὁ πατήρ· Ἀληθῶς συνορῶ τοῦτο οὕτως ἔχον. καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἐπορεύθη πρὸς Σίμωνα. ἡμεῖς δὲ οἱ συνόντες τῷ Πέτρῳ δι' ὅλης νυκτὸς ἐπαλλήλως πυνθανόμενοι ὑπό τε ἡδονῆς καὶ χαρᾶς τῶν λεγομένων νήφοντες ἐνυκτερεύσαμεν. ἤδη δέ πως νυκτὸς ὑπαυγα- ζομένης Πέτρος ἐμβλέψας ἐμοί τε καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου ἔφη· ∆ιαπορῶ τί ἔδοξε τῷ ὑμετέρῳ πατρί. καὶ λέγοντος τοῦτο ἧκεν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτόθι, τὸν Πέτρον ἡμῖν περὶ αὐτοῦ διαλεγόμενον καταλαβών· καὶ ἀθυμοῦντα ἰδὼν προσαγορεύσας ἀπελογήσατο δι' ἣν αἰτίαν ἔξω κεκοίμηται. ἡμεῖς δὲ ἐμβλέποντες αὐτῷ ἐξειστήκειμεν, τὸ εἶδος Σίμωνος ὁρῶντες, φωνῆς δὲ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν ἀκούοντες Φαύστου. καὶ δὴ φευγόντων ἡμῶν αὐτὸν καὶ στυγνούντων ἐξεπέπληκτο ὁ πατὴρ ἐπὶ τῷ οὕτως ἀπηνῶς καὶ ἐχθρῶς αὐτῷ χρῆσθαι. μόνος δὲ Πέτρος τὴν κατὰ φύσιν αὐτοῦ ὁρῶν
