it burns and illumines and, how to say it I do not know, the two become one, the soul with the Creator and in the soul the Creator alone with the alone, whole, He who holds all creation in the palm of His hand. Do not doubt, this whole One with the Father and the Spirit is contained in one soul and encompasses the whole soul within Himself. Understand, see, consider these things! For I told you that the unbearable light, inaccessible to angels, holds the soul within, and again dwells in the soul and does not burn it at all. Have you known the depth of the mystery? (243) The small man among visible things, a shadow and dust, has God whole in his midst, on whose finger creation hangs, and everyone has their being and life and movement; every mind, soul and reason of rational beings has it from Him, but also the spirit of irrational beings and likewise of all living creatures, both intellectual and sensible, has its being from thence. Whoever will have Him, possessing Him and bearing Him within himself and seeing His beauty, how will he endure the flame of desire, how will he bear the fire of love, how will he not shed a warm tear from the heart, how will he speak of the wonders, and how will he number them,

ἐκπυροῖ τε καί φωτίζει καί, τό πῶς εἰπεῖν οὐκ ἔχω, γίνονται εἰς ἕν τά δύο, ἡ ψυχή μετά τοῦ κτίστου καί ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ ὁ κτίστης μόνος μετά μόνης ὅλος, ὁ συνέχων πᾶσαν κτίσιν ἐν τῇ ἑαυτοῦ παλάμῃ. Μή διστάσῃς, οὗτος ὅλος σύν Πατρί καί τῷ Πνεύματι ἐν μιᾷ ψυχῇ χωρεῖται καί ψυχήν ἐντός ἐκείνου ὅλην συμπεριλαμβάνει. Νόει, βλέπε, σκόπει ταῦτα! Τό γάρ ἄστεκτόν σοι εἶπον καί ἀπρόσιτον ἀγγέλοις φῶς ἐντός ψυχήν κατέχειν, ἐν ψυχῇ οἰκεῖν δέ αὖθις καί μή φλέγειν ταύτην ὅλως. Ἔγνω βάθος μυστηρίου; (243) Ὁ μικρός ἐν ὁρωμένοις ἄνθρωπος, σκιά καί κόνις, ἔχει τόν Θεόν ἐν μέσῳ ὅλον, οὗ ἐν τῷ δακτύλῳ ἀποκρέμαται ἡ κτίσις, καί τό εἶναι πᾶς τις ἔχει καί τό ζῆν καί τό κινεῖσθαι, νοῦς ἅπας, ψυχή καί λόγος λογικῶν ἔχει ἐκ τούτου, ἀλλά καί ἀλόγων πνεῦμα καί πάντων ὡσαύτως ζῴων, νοερῶν καί αἰσθητῶν τε, τό εἶναι ἐντεῦθεν ἔχει Τοῦτον ἔχων, ὅστις ἕξει, καί ἐντός αὐτοῦ βαστάζων καί ὁρῶν αὐτοῦ τό κάλλος, πῶς ὑποίσει πόθου φλόγα, πῶς ἐνέγκῃ πῦρ ἀγάπης, πῶς θερμόν οὐκ ἀποστάξει δάκρυον ἐκ τῆς καρδίας, πῶς τά θαύματα ἐξείπει, πῶς δέ ταῦτα ἀριθμήσει,
