having a gentle and mild countenance; she is winged and swift, standing beside the royal throne. When we are judged, she suddenly flies to us and appears, and delivers us from punishment, covering us with her wings. God desires this more than sacrifices; He discourses much concerning her; so much He loves her. He will receive, He says, the widow and the orphan and the poor. From her God loves to be called: The Lord is compassionate and merciful, says David, longsuffering and of great mercy, and true; and again another, The mercy of God is upon all the earth. She has saved the race of men; for if God had not had mercy on us, all would have been lost; she has reconciled us when we were enemies, she has worked countless good things, she persuaded the Son of God to become a slave and to empty 63.224 Himself. Let us emulate her, beloved, through whom we were saved; let us love her, let us prefer her to money, and without money let us have a merciful soul. Nothing is so characteristic of a Christian as almsgiving; nothing do unbelievers and all men so admire, as when we show mercy. For we ourselves also in many things have need of this mercy, and we say to God every day: According to your great mercy, have mercy on us. Let us first begin ourselves; or rather, we do not begin first; for He has already shown His mercy toward us. But, beloved, let us at least follow second. For if men have mercy on the merciful man, even though he has committed ten thousand sins, much more will God. Hear the prophet saying: But I, he says, am like a fruitful olive tree in the house of God. Let us become such, let us become like an olive tree; let us be laden on all sides with the commandments; for it is not enough to be like an olive tree, but also to be fruitful. For there are those who in showing mercy give little, or once in the whole year, or every week, or giving what comes to hand; these are olive trees, but not fruitful, but even withered. That they show mercy, they are olive trees; but that they do not do so generously, they are not fruitful olive trees. But let us become fruitful. What I have often said, I say now also: the greatness of the almsgiving is not shown by the measure of what is given, but by the disposition of the giver. You know the story of the widow; it is good always to bring forward this example, so that not even the poor man may despair of himself, looking to her who cast in the two mites. Some also brought hair for the construction of the temple, and not even these were rejected. But if, having gold, they brought hair, they were accursed; but if, having only this, they brought this, they were accepted. For this reason also Cain was blamed, not because he offered poor things, but because he offered the poorer of what he had; Cursed, it says, is he who has a male, and sacrifices a corrupt thing to God. He did not say it simply, but he who has, it says, and is sparing. If therefore someone does not have, he is free from blame, and rather has a reward. For what is meaner than two obols, and more worthless than hair? And what of a cup of fine flour? But nevertheless these were as well-pleasing as the calves and the gold. For according to what one has, he is acceptable, not according to what he does not have; and, As your hand may have, it says, do good. Therefore, I beseech you, let us empty out with zeal what we have for the poor; even if it is little, we shall receive the same reward as those who cast in more, or rather, a greater reward than those who cast in ten thousand talents. If we do these things, we shall obtain the unspeakable treasures of God, if we not only hear, but also do, if we not only praise, but also show it by our deeds. May it be granted to us all to obtain these things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby
we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a fire

Ὅτι μὲν γὰρ ἐλεοῦσιν, ἐλαῖαι· ὅτι δὲ οὐ φιλοτίμως, οὐ κατάκαρποι ἐλαῖαι. Ἀλλ' ἡμεῖς κατάκαρποι γενώμεθα. Ὃ πολλάκις εἶπον, καὶ λέγω νῦν· οὐ τῷ μέτρῳ τῶν διδομένων τὸ μέγεθος δείκνυται τῆς ἐλεημοσύνης, ἀλλὰ τῇ προαιρέσει τοῦ διδόντος. Ἴστε τὰ κατὰ τὴν χήραν· καλὸν ἀεὶ φέρειν τοῦτο τὸ ὑπόδειγμα, ἵνα μηδὲ ὁ πένης ἀπογινώσκῃ ἑαυτοῦ, ὁρῶν εἰς τὴν τὰ δύο λεπτὰ καταβαλοῦσαν. Ἤνεγκάν τινες καὶ τρίχας ἐν τῇ τοῦ ναοῦ κατασκευῇ, καὶ οὐδὲ οὗτοι ἀπεβλήθησαν. Ἀλλ' εἰ μὲν χρυσίον ἔχοντες, τρίχας ἔφερον, ἐπικατάρατοι· εἰ δὲ τοῦτο ἔχοντες μόνον, τοῦτο ἤνεγκαν, ἀπόδεκτοι. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ Κάϊν ἐμέμφθη, οὐκ ἐπειδὴ φαῦλα προσήνεγκεν, ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ ὧν εἶχε τὰ φαυλότερα· Ἐπικατάρατος, φησὶν, ὃς ἔχει ἄρσεν, καὶ θύει διεφθαρμένον τῷ Θεῷ, Οὐχ ἁπλῶς εἶπεν, ἀλλ' ὁ ἔχων, φησὶ, καὶ φειδόμενος. Εἰ τοίνυν τις οὐκ ἔχει, ἀπήλλακται καὶ ἐγκλημάτων, μᾶλλον δὲ ἔχει μισθόν. Τί γὰρ δύο ὀβολῶν εὐτελέστερον, καὶ τριχῶν οὐδαμινέστερον; τί δὲ σεμιδάλεως κοτύλης; ἀλλ' ὅμως ταῦτα ηὐδοκίμησεν ὁμοίως τοῖς μόσχοις καὶ τῷ χρυσίῳ. Καθ' ὃ γὰρ ἔχει τις, εὐπρόσδεκτος, οὐ καθ' ὃ οὐκ ἔχει· καὶ, Ὡς ἂν ἔχῃ, φησὶν, ἡ χείρ σου, εὖ ποίει· διὸ, παρακαλῶ, κενώσωμεν προθύμως τὰ ὄντα εἰς τοὺς πένητας· κἂν ὀλίγα ᾖ, τὸν αὐτὸν ληψόμεθα μισθὸν τοῖς τὰ πλείονα καταβάλλουσι, μᾶλλον δὲ πλείονα τῶν μυρία τάλαντα καταβαλλόντων. Ἂν ταῦτα ποιῶμεν, ἐπιτευξόμεθα τῶν ἀφάτων θησαυρῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἂν μὴ ἀκούωμεν μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ πράττωμεν, ἂν μὴ ἐπαινῶμεν, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τῶν ἔργων ἐπιδεικνύωμεν. Ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ, ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, δόξα, κράτος, τιμὴ, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
