hour in these things as in the morning and the intelligible sun being seen, just as formerly in the prophets I manifested myself and they, seeing, praised, always calling upon me: "For in the morning," says David, "hear me, in the morning I will stand before you and you will see me," and another: "Then your light will break forth early and your healing will spring up quickly," that is, when you too keep my commandments."
And why am I thus compelled to say everything to your love, all that God, thirsting for our salvation, speaks to us, but surely, so that by learning all things you may be convinced that those who sit in darkness ought to see the great light shining, if indeed they look at all, and so that none of you may think that it has shone, but it is impossible for men still in the body to see it. For if it were not possible, why did it shine and does it shine, not being seen by them? Rather, the light always was and always shone and shines in the purified, and it shone in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it, and now it shines and the darkness does not overcome it or, rather, does not touch it. But to say ‘now’, that it has risen for the people sitting in darkness, means that it has just now been pleased to be revealed to those to whom it also manifests itself; for the others, being in darkness, do not overcome it. (435) For the invisible one was seen, through the body with sensible eyes by all who beheld him, both unbelievers and believers, but the light of his Godhead was known and revealed only to those who were faithful through works, who also said to him: "Behold, we, Lord, have left all and followed you"; and by saying 'all' he included possessions and money and wills and the despising of even this temporal life and to abhor it because of tasting that hypostatic and eternal life, for that which is sweeter is in every way also more honorable, which is God himself.
But I exhort all of you, O fathers and brothers, to strive to partake of such life which is the light of God, the Holy Spirit itself, which sanctifies those who partake of it and makes them gods by adoption. And do not forget the many words which I have spoken to you, but first learn yourselves always to do what is good and thus teach others to do this, so that the word of your teaching may be practical and well-received by those who hear. But if not, I am innocent of all of you, for I did not shrink from announcing to you what was spoken to me and made known and commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ through his adorable and holy Spirit concerning the high gifts and graces of his co-unoriginate (536) God and Father, which he, the same good and beneficent God of ours, always and until now gives through faith to those who laboriously seek participation, to whom is due all glory, honor and worship now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Discourse 35. (437)
By the same. Thanksgiving to God for the gifts he has been deemed worthy of. And an introduction on how God always appears to the pure in heart, and
in what matters and signs. I give thanks and worship and fall down before you, Lord of all and all-holy
King, that you had mercy on me who am unworthy and honored and glorified me, as you yourself willed from above, since even before the world came to be from you, holding me whole within yourself, you glorified and honored me with your word and image. For not for any other reason than for me
