to perceive the truth. For I perceive that you are not indifferent towards the affairs of the Churches, since you even sent a certain letter to us about these things, as you indicated in these recent writings, which I would gladly learn who it was that received it to deliver, so as to know the one who did wrong. For I have not yet come across your writings to us about these matters. 212.2 For how much, then, do you think I would pay for a conversation with you, so that I might make known to you the things that grieve me (for, as you know, even speaking out brings some relief to those in pain), and to respond concerning the matters under investigation, not entrusting them to lifeless letters, but myself in my own person clearly saying and explaining each thing? For living words have more effective persuasion, and in being easy to attack and vulnerable to slander they are no longer like what is written. For nothing, henceforth, is too bold for anyone, seeing that even those entrusted by us with the greatest things, whom we perceived, seeing them among men, as being something greater than human, these have undertaken to circulate certain writings of someone or other as ours and on the basis of them to slander us to the brotherhoods, so that nothing, henceforth, is more to be avoided by the devout than our name. For having from the beginning made it my practice to be unknown, as I know not if any other has who has considered human weakness, now, as if I had chosen the opposite, to make myself known to all men, so I am talked of everywhere on land, and I will add, on sea as well. For both those who practice the utmost limit of impiety and bring the godless dogma of dissimilarity to the Churches have their war against me. And those who drive a middle course, as they think, starting from those same principles, but not following through with the sequence of their reasonings, because it is offensive to the ears of the majority, they are annoyed with us and wash us with reproaches as much as they can, and refrain from no plot, even though the Lord has made their attempts ineffective. How are these things not grievous? How do they not make my life painful? I who count as one consolation for my ills the weakness of my flesh, by which I am persuaded that I shall not remain for a long time in this wretched life. And so much for these things. But as for you, I exhort you to bear the sufferings of the body with a great soul and in a manner worthy of the God who has called us; who, if He sees us receiving our present circumstances with thanksgiving, will either remove the painful things, as in the case of Job, or will reward us with the great crowns of patience in our state of being after this life.
213.τ WITHOUT SUPERSCRIPTION, TO A PIOUS MAN
213.1 May the Lord who has granted me swift help in my afflictions
Himself grant you help in return for the rest you have given us by your present visit through your letter, fulfilling the reward for your comfort of our lowliness with the true and great gladness of the spirit. For I happened to be afflicted in soul, having observed in a crowded gathering a certain brutish and utterly irrational indifference of the people and of their leaders an old and incorrigible habit of evil. But when I saw your letter and the treasure of love in it, I knew that He who orders our affairs has shone a sweet consolation upon us who live in bitterness. Therefore I also address your holiness, making the usual request, that you not cease praying for my miserable life, lest, being submerged by the illusion of this life, I forget God, who raises the poor from the earth, and suffering some pride, I fall into the condemnation of the devil, and being negligent of my stewardship, while sleeping I am [overtaken] by the
