A certain astrologer Serapion said that Antoninus would die before long 1.449 and Macrinus would succeed him, and he pointed him out with his finger as he was standing with the senate. But he, out of anger, or rather out of fate, did not recognize the face of Macrinus, but ordered another man standing nearby to be killed. And Macrinus hastened to preempt Antoninus; when he had dismounted from his horse during a hunt to relieve himself, Macrinus sent a centurion and killed him with a sword, saying to him, "As you slaughtered your brother, so I you." In his time, Philadelphus was appointed the first bishop of Byzantium, for three years; for previously a certain presbyter had presided over the church for 8 years.
After Antoninus, Macrinus reigned, who was a Moor from Cappadocia by race, for 8 years. And a certain Eutychianus took Avitus, who was the illegitimate son of Antoninus, placed a diadem on him and proclaimed him emperor, and giving gold to the soldiers, he rose up and joined battle with Macrinus. And Macrinus, being defeated, fled and was slaughtered with his son. Avitus, or Pseudo-Antoninus (some call him Aurelius Antoninus Heliogabalus), reigned for 3 years, 9 months, and 4 days. This man was circumcised and did not partake of pork, and he also had an idol, which he named Heliogabalus. And being effeminate, he was so disposed to the passion of licentiousness that he even made Hierocles his lawful husband. And as Dio says, Avitus begged a physician to make him of two natures through a frontal 1.450 incision with his art. He was slaughtered because of his impurities, defilements, and intemperance, ending his life badly. Alexander, the son of Mamaea, cousin of Avitus, reigned for 13 years and 8 months. In his time there was a famine in Rome, so that they even touched human flesh. This man, having campaigned against the Persians, was utterly defeated, and being despised, was slaughtered with his mother; she happened to be a Christian, and she summoned Origen, who was staying in Antioch, to her, wishing to be taught the mystery concerning Christ. In his time Narcissus, bishop of Jerusalem, when the anointing oil ran out during a baptism, ordered water to be put into the vessel, and having prayed thus, he changed it into oil. Maximinus reigned for 3 years. This man, being formerly a shepherd, then having become a soldier and after this a general of Alexander, was chosen emperor by the people and the senate on account of his bodily manliness, understanding, and prudence. He, out of hatred for Alexander, who had and honored many Christians, raised a great persecution against the Christians. And he found an end worthy of his impious mind, being treacherously slaughtered by Maximus and Balbinus. Maximus, Balbinus, and Gordian for two months, and was slaughtered by soldiers. And Gordian had previously been made Caesar by Maximinus. And Philip the prefect prevented the grain from being transported to the 1.451 army. This man was the father of the holy martyr Eugenia. In his time was the holy Babylas, bishop of Antioch, and the saints Laurentius and Cyprian were martyred, and Eugenius became bishop of Byzantium for 25 years. After Balbinus, Pupianus reigned for 2 months, and was slain in battle. After him, Iunior reigned for three months, who first created the *candidati* and *protectores*, and having established the order of the *scholares*, he called it the *Iuniores* after his own name. After him, Gordian his son reigned for 4 years. And in a war, having fallen with his horse and broken his thigh, he died. And after Gordian, Uniorus his son reigned for two years, and he died of dropsy. In his time Sabellius the heresiarch was becoming known. After him, Marcus for 3 years. And after Marcus, Justinian for two years; and having been bled, while he was sleeping his blood poured out, and losing consciousness, he died. After him Philip reigned for 7 years, who was a student of the Christian faith,
