and arrogance kindles my wrath. 6Behold, it is written before me: I will not be silent, until I have repaid into their bosom 7all their sins and the sins of their fathers together, says the Lord. Since living with all lawlessness as though having attained the highest virtue they despise others, they will reap the reward of what they dare, and he teaches that not only in the present life but also in the one to come they will pay the penalty; for on this account he has said: And of their fathers together, says the Lord. Who burned incense on the mountains. He says these things concerning their fathers. And on the hills they reproached me. I will repay their works first into their bosom. He has revealed the judgment that will be in the future life. Then he teaches for what reason he bore with them transgressing for so long a time: 8Thus says the Lord: As a grape is found in the cluster, and they will say: Do not destroy it, because the blessing of the Lord is in it, so will I do for the sake of him who serves me; for his sake I will not destroy all. For just as, he says, if someone finds one ripe grape in a cluster, for its sake he spares the whole cluster, so that he may offer the first-fruit to God, so I, having promised Abraham to bless all the nations in his seed, for the sake of that seed I bore with all of Israel transgressing, for this reason I did not overlook them serving the Egyptians, for this reason I freed them from the power of the Babylonians. 9And I will bring forth the seed from Jacob and from Judah, and he will inherit my holy mountain. The prophetic word has clearly shown us the one prophesied; for having recalled the seed, through which God promised to give the blessing to the nations, he mentioned Jacob and Judah. For the blessing which Jacob received through his forefathers and from the God of his forefathers, this he gave neither to Reuben the firstborn, nor to Simeon the second, nor to Levi the third, from whom the race of priests sprang, nor to Joseph the beloved, but to Judah; for he said, «A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved, and he is the expectation of the nations.» For this reason the God of all said: And I will bring forth the seed from Jacob and from Judah, that is, the expectation of the nations, through which I promised to bless all the tribes of the earth. Then after the Lord Christ he mentions the apostles who believed in him and the others who succeeded to their preaching: |182 b| And my elect and my servants will inherit it and will dwell there. Then he also foretells the calling of the nations: 10And there shall be in the forest folds for flocks, and the valley of Achor for a resting place for herds for my people who have sought me. He calls the nations a forest on account of their former unbelief, and he calls the churches folds, and the peoples gathered in them flocks. And through the valley of Achor he alludes to the compunction that occurs in the churches; for Achar, or also Achor, who had stolen and transgressed the law concerning the accursed thing, they stoned in a certain valley and on account of this event they were filled with much compunction. 11But you who forsake me and forget my holy mountain, and prepare a table for Fortune, and fill up a mixed drink for the demon, 12I will deliver you to the sword, you shall all fall by the slaughter. For all things are full of impiety; first, to abandon the benefactor and to despise the temple dedicated to God, then instead of God to serve the demons who are opposed to God, and instead of the providence of God to choose Fortune and to think that it governs human affairs and that it provides the things supplied by God. Because I called you and you did not listen, I spoke and you did not hear, and you did evil before me and chose the things that I did not will. He called them both through the prophets, and they continued to resist; and he called them also when he became man; for «Jesus»
