But answer me when I ask, I beseech you: "What then? Does the Father love the Son unknowingly and does the Son exist with the Father unknowingly and invisibly?" - "No," you would surely say. For if we grant this and decree that the Father and the Son are ignorant of each other, our faith is gone and has perished; for if they are ignorant of each other, it is entirely necessary that we too are completely ignorant of them; and if this is so, then we are atheists, having no knowledge of God. But if "just as that one," he says, "the Father knows the Son, and the Son knows the Father" and as God He is with God and the Father, and the Father is likewise with the Son, as when He says: "Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, so also may they be in me and I in them," it surely indicates the equality of their union with one another. However, the Son's union with the Father is by nature and co-eternal, whereas ours with the Son is by adoption and grace; nevertheless, we are all united to God in the same way and inseparable, as He Himself says again: "I in them and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; why? so that the world may know that you sent me and have loved them, just as you have loved me," and Paul: "Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free, but Christ is all and in all."
Hear these things, therefore, you who seem to be (426) spiritual, and believe him who speaks; but me, who tells you in the word of grace the gifts which those receive from God who run to Him in fervent faith and do His commandments, ministering to the Spirit who inspires from above, release from all blame. And who is it that speaks? Hear the Lord Himself saying: "For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of God speaking in you." You see that it is not I who speak these supernatural and great things to your love, but the Spirit of God who speaks in us. And Peter the chief testifies to this, saying: "For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit"; And if we, being humble and unworthy, are far from all holiness and from the holy men of God, yet we cannot deny the gift given to us from God, but as debtors of His grace we minister to you the oracles of God and reveal the talent that was given to us and the gift through prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the high priest, who perfected us for the priesthood, just as this very chief of the apostles commands us, for he says: "As each one has received a gift, ministering it to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God; if anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies."
(427) Therefore, it is the Spirit who speaks, brothers, not I, as the Lord and His faithful disciple have assured us. But if I am lying, where shall I flee from the inescapable judgment, which sends liars to destruction? "For you will destroy," he says, "all those who speak lies." Just as he who disbelieves one speaking through the Spirit sins against and blasphemes the Spirit who is speaking, so again, one who is deprived of the grace of the Spirit from above, if he should dare to say, "I speak in the Holy Spirit," will be, like Simon Magus and his followers, an alien to God and an adversary. For he who opposes the words of the Spirit is surely an adversary of God. For God is inseparable and indivisible; for the Holy Spirit is inseparable from the eternity and kingdom of the Father and of the Son.
Do not, therefore, wish to become fighters against God and adversaries of God, brothers, but come, worship and fall down with us, and do not rise from there until you receive the gift of God, just as we, the unworthy, have received it by His grace.
