of the devil” and again “when he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for his father is a liar,” so as to mean Judas and Cain; then, “for his father was a liar,” so as to mean the devil himself, on account of the things similarly devised by each of them. For having breathed into the mouth of the serpent, the devil spoke all lies, and so he then deceived Eve. And their errant mythmaking is refuted, even though Scripture says “that Cain killed his brother, because he was of the devil.” For it has been shown altogether, that not because Eve, having conceived from the seed of the devil as in a marital union and bodily intercourse, gave birth to Cain and Abel, as it seemed to them, but on account of being of like character and an imitation of the devil's wickedness he was called his son. 7. Again, these same people say that Adam, having been united to Eve his own wife, begat Seth, his own son by nature. And then they say the power above, along with the ministering angels of the good God, came down and snatched away Seth himself, whom they also call Allogenes, and carried him up somewhere above and raised him for 2.88 a sufficient time, so that he might not be killed, and after a long time brought him down again into this world and made him spiritual and † bodily, so that the demiurge and the other authorities and powers of the world-making god would not prevail against him. And they say that he no longer served the maker and demiurge, but had come to know the unnamable power and the good God above, and served this one and had revealed many things against the maker of the world and the powers and authorities. † For whom indeed they also composed certain books written in the name of Seth himself, saying that they were given by him, and others in his name and that of his seven sons. For they say he begat seven sons called Allogenes, as we have also said in connection with other heresies, I mean of the Gnostics and Sethians. And these men also say there are other prophets, a certain Martiades and Marsianus, who were snatched up into the heavens and came down after three days. And there are many things which they fabricate in their mythmaking, and fabricating blasphemies against the existing God Almighty, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, as if he were a ruler and an inventor of wickedness, as they are convicted by their own words. For if he is an inventor of wicked things and an evildoer, how would he not immediately be found to be good, as we have also said in connection with other heresies, having legislated against fornication and adultery and robbery and covetousness? For they themselves also say he is the God of the Jews; and to the Jews he gave the law, in which he forbade all these things of which they say he is the inventor. And how could he be called the father of Satan, who has demonstrated so many things against him? And if he is foreign to the God above spoken of by them, and is not himself the God Almighty, our king and lord, who is preached in the law and in the prophets and in the gospels and apostles, himself God the Lord, and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, how does the Lord himself clearly teach us in the 2.89 gospel, saying, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,” in order to show that his Father is God of all things. 8. And indicating again that there will be a resurrection of the dead, the Son from him says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up”; and by temple he meant his own body, which was to be destroyed by the hands of men, that is, to be killed. But that which was not a body, but appeared only in seeming, as these men in turn say, could not have come into hands and been raised on the third day, as he promised. It has therefore been clearly shown through such a dispensation that the resurrection of the dead is irrefutable and that there is neither need
