and that the pope be commemorated, and then thus that the one who was to be raised to patriarch be both elected and installed. Therefore, to induce the patriarch was a difficult task, since he did not immediately resign the presidency. Since, at any rate, he would not resign, they produced witnesses, as it were, of his words to the emperor—and these were the circle of the Dikaiophylax Skoutariotes—that the patriarch had supposedly promised his voluntary cession, if the undertaking should prosper; the hierarchs judged this statement as a complete resignation, and furthermore also the oath, the one as a promise, the other as an outright impediment. For on the one hand swearing not to accept the deed, and on the other promising to cede once it had happened, was certainly indicative of his own resignation, should the deed proceed; for to what end would he be in charge of the church's affairs, when the deed had come to pass, for the sake of 511 which he both made oaths not to accept and promises to cede immediately should it go forward? For these reasons, they voted for his suspension, and on the ninth of the month Hekatombaion his commemoration ceased, and he moved from the Peribleptos to the Lavra at Anaplous. On the sixteenth of the same month, while Nicholas of Chalcedon was celebrating the liturgy at the palace, with the envoys present there together with the emperor, the Apostle was read in two languages, that is, the lection from the book of Acts—for the feast of Peter, the leader of the apostles, was being celebrated, which the church celebrates on the occasion of the deposition of the holy chains—and likewise the holy Gospel was read both in Greek and in Latin, and so in the proper place the pope was also commemorated by the deacon; and this was Gregory, supreme pontiff of the apostolic church, commemorated as ecumenical pope.
23. Concerning the schism of the church in general. From this point the affairs of the church were sick, and people were separated from one another, and one would communicate with this person at the divine assemblies, while others, 'touch not, handle not,' were being scrupulous even about their cups and greetings. And the schism grew greater, and he who yesterday was fully persuaded about this, today turned away. And just as if someone suffering from a diseased spleen, when another illness also occurs, has a double pain, and the former is increased by the affliction of the latter, and these in turn conflict with one another, so that the treatment and reduction of the one becomes an increase of the other and causes the sick person to despair, in the same way it also happened then to the church of God. For while the schism concerning Arsenios was sufficiently advanced, this second one also befell, so that both were the greatest sicknesses and were able to corrupt 513 the great and indivisible body of the church, and in themselves also very incompatible, and again for those of each party to disagree with one another, some in this way, others in another, and some were disposed to the schism simply, others more strictly. Who could worthily lament the events of that time, when indeed every forbidden sin seemed more tolerable in comparison than communicating? For not even as much as had actually been done was being reported to those outside, but they added more and worse things, lavishing the worst, so that they might win over even the one who was in some measure quiet. For both the malice of the speakers and the simple and rustic nature of the listeners induced belief in what was being said. It is prudent, therefore, for the rustic not to be meddlesome, but to be allowed to be saved without meddling. But if someone should move and rouse him supposedly to secure matters of faith, alas, how great the drivel! whatever one might say to persuade him to be moderate towards these things, as one who knows nothing more than the meat-market and the spade and a quiet life. Many, finding the masses to be such—for the account does not touch upon all, those for whom an account of the difference was at hand and history was a concern and they paid attention to the scriptures and they distinguished how great the accusation was and handled matters no less moderately than securely—made the schism greater than it needed to be.
