having professed, and having fallen from her promise, shall fulfill the time for the sin of adultery in the economy of her own life. The same also for those who have promised a monastic life, and fall away. 217.61 The thief, if on his own initiative, having repented, he should accuse himself, shall be barred for one year only from the communion of the holy things; but if he should be convicted, for two years. And the time shall be divided for him into prostration and standing, and then let him be deemed worthy of communion. 217.62 He who commits indecency with males shall be regulated for the time of one who transgresses in adultery. 217.63 He who confesses his impiety with irrational animals shall observe the same time in penance. 217.64 The perjurer shall be without communion for ten years: for two years a weeper, for three a hearer, for four a prostrator, for one year a stander only, and then being deemed worthy of communion. 217.65 He who confesses sorcery or poisoning shall do penance for the time of a murderer, being regulated thus as one who convicted himself in that sin. 217.66 The grave-robber shall be without communion for ten years: for two a weeper, for three a hearer, for four a prostrator, for one year a stander, and then shall be received. 217.67 Incest with a sibling shall have the penance for the time of a murderer. 217.68 The state of men in marriage within forbidden kinship, if it should be discovered to have occurred in sin, shall receive the penances for adulterers. 217.69 A lector, if he should have relations with his betrothed before marriage, after being idle for one year he shall be received to read, remaining without promotion. But one who has a clandestine marriage without betrothal shall be stopped from his service. The same also for a subdeacon. 217.70 A deacon defiled in the lips and confessing to have sinned only this far shall be suspended from his ministry, but he shall be deemed worthy to partake of the holy things with the deacons. The same also for a presbyter. But if anyone should be discovered to have sinned anything more than this, in whatever rank he may be, he shall be deposed. 217.71 He who was aware of each of the aforesaid sins and did not confess, but was convicted, he himself also shall be under penance for the same length of time for which the doer of evil has been under penance. 217.72 He who gives himself over to diviners or any such people shall himself also be regulated for the time of murderers. 217.73 He who has denied Christ and transgressed the mystery of salvation ought to be a weeper for all the time of his life, and is bound to be a penitent, being deemed worthy of the holy things at the time when he departs from this life, by faith in the loving-kindness of God. 217.74 If, however, any of those who have been in the aforesaid sins becomes earnest in doing penance, he who has been entrusted by the loving-kindness of God to loose and to bind, if he should become more merciful, seeing the exceeding penance of the one who has sinned, to the point of lessening the time of the penances, shall not be worthy of condemnation, since the history in the Scriptures makes known to us that those who do penance with greater effort quickly obtain the loving-kindness of God. 217.75 He who has been defiled with his own sister, either by his father or his mother, let him not be permitted to be present in the house of prayer, until he desists from his lawless and wicked deed. And after coming to an awareness of the terrible sin, let him be a weeper for a period of three years, standing at the door of the houses of prayer and beseeching the people as they enter for prayer, so that each one with sympathy may make earnest supplications to the Lord on his behalf. And after this, for another period of three years, let him be received for hearing only, and hearing the Scriptures and the teaching, let him be cast out and not be deemed worthy of prayer. Then, if indeed with tears he has sought it and has fallen down before the Lord with a contrite heart and deep humility, let prostration be given to him for another three years. And so, when he has shown fruits worthy of repentance, in the tenth year let him be received to the prayer of the faithful
