“the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and glory with his chosen angels,” and again: “The sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn. For the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall as a leaf falls from a vine.” The Others, however, called the “casting out” a “rebuke.” 16 For by the fire of the Lord all the earth will be judged, and by his sword, all flesh. Thus also the divine apostle said: “Because it is revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done,” and in the holy gospels the Lord: “For everyone will be salted with fire.” For fire tests both genuine and counterfeit gold. And he calls the punitive action a “sword.” Thus also the divine David said: “Fire will go before him and will burn up his enemies round about,” and the divine Daniel: “A river of fire was flowing and came out from before him.” Many shall be slain by the Lord. 17 those who sanctify and purify themselves in the gardens and in the entryways; those who eat swine's flesh and the abominations and the mouse shall be consumed together, says the Lord, 18 and I know their thoughts and their works and I will repay them. He calls “slain” those who are given over to wickedness, and “those who sanctify and purify themselves in gardens and in entryways” those who use ablutions. And he teaches that he will also demand an account for the worship according to the Law from those who were under it before the incarnation of our Savior. For this reason he also mentioned swine's flesh and the other things forbidden by the Law. And I demand an account from them for these things, he says, since I know their purpose exactly; for as if despising my commands |185 a| they transgressed what was legislated. Behold, I am coming to gather all the nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory, 19 and I will leave a sign upon them. He has clearly shown that he took the form of a servant not only for the salvation of the Jews, but offering salvation to all the nations. He calls the type of the saving cross a “sign.” And I will send from them those who are saved to the nations: to Tarshish and Phud and Lud and Mosoch and Thobel and to Greece and to the islands far away, who have not heard my name nor seen my glory, and they will declare my glory among the nations. The Master said to the holy apostles: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” In them the aforementioned prophecy received its fulfillment; for they brought the divine proclamation to all the nations. He calls Tarshish Carthage, the metropolis of Libya, and Phud the entire nation of the Libyans, and Lud the Lydians, and Mosoch the Cappadocians, and Thobel the Iberians, and he also mentions Greece and the islands, and through these all the nations that have neither known the God of all nor had experience of his power. And these, he says, being sent by me will bring them: 20 They will bring your brothers from all the nations as a gift to God with horses and chariots in litters of mules with canopies to the holy city to Jerusalem, said the Lord, just as the sons of Israel might bring their sacrifices with psalms into the house of the Lord; 21 and from them I will take for myself priests and Levites, said the Lord. He calls those from the nations who have believed “their brothers” on account of the commonality of nature. And there were Jews among the nations, and a great multitude from the nations believed. Of these were Crispus the ruler of the synagogue and Sosthenes again a ruler of the synagogue, who benefited from the teaching of the divine Paul, and countless others in both Antioch of Pisidia and Iconium and Lystra and in the other cities, who received the saving teaching. These the divine apostles brought as certain gifts to the God of all with a certain ineffable honor. For through the horses and the litters and the canopies
