despising the mighty attack from without, he contrived for some griefs and pusillanimities to arise among you toward one another, as I hear, which at first are small and easily healed, but as time goes on, being magnified by contentiousness, are wont to fall into a state of being completely incurable. Therefore I have hastened to this exhortation by letter. If it were possible, I would have come myself and besought you in person. But since the times do not permit this, we offer you this letter in place of a supplication, so that, out of respect for our exhortations, you may put an end to all contentiousness toward one another and quickly send me the good news that you have forgiven one another's complaints. 219.2 For I want your understanding to know this, that he is great in the sight of God who humbly submits to his neighbor, and unashamedly accepts the accusations against himself, even if they are not true, for the sake of bestowing the great benefit of peace upon the Church of God. Let there be, then, a noble contest among you as to who will first be deemed worthy to be called a son of God, by securing this dignity for himself through peacemaking. The most God-beloved bishop also wrote you fitting things, and is writing again what is incumbent upon him. But we too, because it is still permitted for us to be nearer to you, are not able to neglect your affairs. Therefore, when our most devout brother Theodore the subdeacon arrived and said that the Church was in grief and turmoil, being severely crushed and our hearts smitten with deep pain, we could not bear to remain silent, but we exhorted you, casting aside all justification against one another, to bring about peace, so that you may neither give pleasure to the adversaries, nor betray the boast of the Church which is now proclaimed throughout the whole world, that you all live thus as one body, governed by one soul and heart. We greet through your reverence all the people of God, both those in civil dignities and powers and the fullness of all the clergy, and we exhort them to remain like themselves. For we seek no addition, because by their display of good works they have precluded every excess.
220. To the people in Beroea
220.1 The Lord has given great comfort to those who are deprived of a face-
to-face meeting, namely, conversation by letter, from which it is possible to learn not the physical appearance, but the very disposition of the soul. Whence also now, having received the letters of your reverence, we at once both recognized you and took up love for you in our hearts, not needing a long time to produce familiarity in us. For from the very thought laid up in the letters we were set on fire with love for the beauty of your soul. For in addition to what was written, being such as it was, the aptitude of the mediating brothers also showed us your affairs more clearly. For our most longed-for and most devout fellow presbyter Acacius, by relating more than what was written and bringing to our sight your daily contest and vigorous resistance for the sake of piety, produced in us so much wonder and aroused so great a desire to enjoy the good things among you, that we pray to the Lord that there may one day be an occasion to know your affairs through our own experience. For he reported to us not only the exactness of you who have been entrusted with the liturgy of the altar, but also the harmony of all the people and of the leaders of the

ὀφθαλμοὺς συντυχίας, τὴν διὰ τοῦ γράμ ματος ὁμιλίαν ἐξ ἧς ἐστι μανθάνειν οὐ τὸν σωματικὸν χαρακτῆρα, ἀλλ' αὐτῆς τῆς ψυχῆς τὴν διάθεσιν. Ὅθεν καὶ νῦν δεξάμενοι τὰ γράμματα τῆς εὐλαβείας ὑμῶν, ὁμοῦ τε ἐγνωρίσαμεν ὑμᾶς καὶ τὴν περὶ ὑμᾶς ἀγάπην ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν ἀνελάβομεν, οὐ δεηθέντες χρόνου μακροῦ συνήθειαν ἐμποιοῦντος ἡμῖν. Ἐξ αὐτῆς γὰρ τῆς ἐναποκειμένης τοῖς γράμμασι διανοίας εἰς τὸ φίλτρον τοῦ κάλλους τῆς ψυχῆς ὑμῶν ἐξεκαύθημεν. Καὶ γὰρ πρὸς τοῖς ἐπεσταλμένοις, τοι ούτοις οὖσιν, ἔτι καὶ ἡ τῶν μεσιτευόντων ἀδελφῶν ἐπιτη δειότης ἐναργέστερον ἡμῖν ἐδείκνυ τὰ καθ' ὑμᾶς. Ὁ γὰρ πο θεινότατος καὶ εὐλαβέστατος συμπρεσβύτερος ἡμῶν Ἀκάκιος, πλείονα τῶν ἐπεσταλμένων διηγούμενος καὶ ὑπ' ὄψιν ἄγων τὴν καθημερινὴν ὑμῶν ἄθλησιν καὶ τὴν εὔτονον ὑπὲρ τῆς εὐσεβείας ἔνστασιν, τοσοῦτον ἡμῖν ἐνεποίησε τὸ θαῦμα καὶ τοσοῦτον ἤγειρε τὸν πόθον τῆς ἀπολαύσεως τῶν ἐν ὑμῖν καλῶν, ὥστε προσεύχεσθαι ἡμᾶς τῷ Κυρίῳ γενέσθαι ποτὲ καιρὸν καὶ διὰ τῆς οἰκείας πείρας γνωρίσαι τὰ καθ' ὑμᾶς.
