we have signified not the quality of its flesh, but the activity which it performs; for from flying, a dove is called solid. just as the following things also have their proper names not from their nature, but from their activity; for example, a stag from capturing snakes; and it is possible to find countless other examples, so that I do not list everything that has its proper name from its proper activity. For activity is the power of nature. But activity and active and act are not the same. For the active is said to be the being itself, epsilon.728 the thing of the substance. But an act is the result, which the activity of the one acting accomplishes; an act of God is the heaven, the angel, man and all creation. But activity is so called from being in works, that is, appearing. Activity is understood in two ways: intelligibly and sensibly. The sensible is that which is seen and touched and heard and perishes; but the intelligible is the incorruptible and eternal, that which does not fall under sense perception; for example, the intelligible world. The faculties of sense perception in the hidden man within us are also intelligible, that is, those things known not bodily, but according to the mind, without bodily eyes. But the intellectual is that which has been created in the soul by the creator, according to which we are naturally constituted to apprehend every thought, whether of the unbegotten or the begotten. And this is without parts, insofar as the mist of the passions might recede. Activity is so called according to acting or doing. Enē. with an acute accent, the new. And entelecheia is also said of that which is separated from the body, as the sailor from the ship. Porphyry calls the soul entelecheia. Entrapezitidos. of a parasite. Ennoia koinē. that which has its confessed origin from one or more things by all. epsilon.731 Enyō. battle. or a war goddess. Enōtisis. understanding, or a synopsis of the words. as in: give ear to my words, O Lord. Henōsis. a common coming together of separated things. And it is called union from pushing into the one, that is, to push things together. And union is spoken of in five ways: by mingling, as of wine and water; by division, as of man to man; relatively, as the nations in faith; by position, as gold to gold. But the union of Christ is said to be according to hypostasis, beyond all these. And a union according to hypostasis is the self-subsistent coming together of the two natures in the womb of the holy Theotokos. for neither the body before God
