we have. The one who acts, therefore, according to the proportion of his action, demonstrates the measure of his faith, receiving the measure of grace according to how he believed; but the one who does not act, according to the proportion of his inaction, demonstrates the measure of his unbelief, receiving, as he disbelieved, the deprivation of grace. Therefore, the envious man does evil in being jealous, since the choice to believe and to act, and to receive grace according to the measure of his faith, clearly lies with him and not with another.

15. How Zerubbabel is a type of the Lord. 16. The type has been well shown to correspond to the reality. For just as Zerubbabel was not

made a captive, but was born from among the captives then enslaved in Babylon, and became their redeemer; so also the Lord, being sinless, from us and among us was reckoned as one of us, willingly taking on the passibility of our nature, by which, having endured our true natural weakness, he freed us from the corrupting power and led us up from earth to the heavens; on the one hand, by the power of his incarnation taking upon himself without deficiency the whole of nature through an ineffable union; on the other hand, by the call of grace, [taking] only those who both joyfully received the call and through their works reverenced the grace of regeneration.

17. The flesh of sin is that which has its generation from the seed of a man; for at the same time it potentially has (532) sin and corruption by nature, having the one as the beginning and the other as the end of its own generation; but the flesh in the likeness of sinful flesh is the flesh of God, which was formed without the seed of a man; having corruption by nature, in which he was like us; but having sinlessness by nature in power, in which he was unlike us.

18. Since, he says, with respect to the unmixed and supreme theology, the doctrine of the incarnation is secondary; for the one belongs to the supreme doctrine concerning the essence; while the other, which contains the supreme activity of providence, was called 'the dawn from below' by the Spirit. For in the doctrine of the divine incarnation is contained the generation of the ages and of the things in the ages; and the extension of beings toward the indefiniteness of the life beyond the ages through grace.

19. The lover of good things, he says, according to providence, by the principles of wisdom willingly hastens toward the grace of deification; but the one who does not love these things, by a just judgment, through methods of discipline is unwillingly led away from evil; the one being deified through providence as a lover of God; the other, as a lover of matter, not being permitted through judgment to come to condemnation.

20. Our blameworthy fire is the law of the flesh; the light of this fire is the movement in the habit of the passions according to this blameworthy law; and the blameworthy flame is the kindling of the passions through activity. Or again, the blameworthy fire is evil; the blameworthy light is the habit of evil; and the flame is the activity. Therefore, the mind must not be warmed by this fire, nor illumined by this light, nor consumed by this flame; for the light that is pleasant to the senses is the deepest darkness to the mind.

21. True faith is constitutive of truth, having no falsehood; a good conscience brings with it the power of love, as having no transgression of a divine commandment.

22. The resurrection is a re-formation of nature, surpassing the formation of nature in paradise; generally, by the complete reversal of all things; specifically, by the ineffable deification of the saints through grace.

23. The discourse perhaps spoke of the hands of the intelligible Zerubbabel, both the creative one, by which we receive generation for well-being; and the renewing one, by which for the

ιε΄.
