we are convinced that the Lord has not completely forsaken our church, since the one and only assistance from you has been available to it from above and from the beginning in the present circumstances by the providence of God. You therefore are truly the unpolluted and unadulterated spring of orthodoxy from the beginning, you the calm harbor of the whole church, removed from every heretical storm, you the God-chosen city of refuge for salvation. But since it is bold for us, the wretched and unworthy, to raise praises to your God-named authority, which was long ago blessed by divine tongues, it is necessary to come to the painful matter. The impious, therefore, do not cease to do their usual things with all zeal and madness, dragging and pulling everyone down into the abyss of heresy, threatening them with death; for it is altogether necessary for the one not yielding to the wicked flame to be subjected to the scourges with their consequences, so that little by little (most dreadful!) even some of those who have contended are defecting. And we again, the humble and last of the members, daring on behalf of our own holy head and of our present eminent paternity and fraternity, we both entreat and implore that your holy and apostolic soul be exhorted first, which we also believe you do, not to cease from your prayer inclining toward God for the strengthening and preservation of all (yes, we beseech your most holy compassion), then, to bring to completion with God what has been counseled and ordained for it by the movement of the Spirit, for the benefit of us the humble, and for the eternal blessedness of its own virtue. 273 {1To Basil, archimandrite of Rome}1 I did not write before because of some mischance, but now at least I am writing to my beloved and holy father. For with whom else can I converse there than with the one from above and from the beginning, both acquaintance and friend and father and champion and soul-mate and like-minded and fellow-zealot and helper and counsellor and whatever one can say regarding intimacy and providence and assistance for the sake of God alone and virtue, with which you have clothed yourself in a divine way of life? Truly beloved and preeminent in dignity, you shine forth in the first of the churches of God and from it you radiate light like the sun upon the ends of the earth, as it were, through your God-given name heard everywhere and your truly royal address. Such and so great are you, O man of God and admirable father; but for us it is to write a letter and again to send Euphemianus our faithful son. The subject is for no other reason than the reason for the previous letters, which were delivered by Dionysius and the same Euphemianus, our most genuine and beloved sons. who, even if they did not bring back replies, yet nevertheless both through their own report and the letter of the holy Methodius together with the most God-beloved bishop of Monovasia sufficiently rekindled our humble souls, saying things wished for and very pleasing to God and truly worthy of an apostolic soul, which were spoken sympathetically and in imitation of Christ and moreover were also formulated, moved by the Spirit and in accordance with the tradition of the fathers, by the most holy apostolic one. For so we the humble also longed for the assistance to come by the inclination of the ruler of your world, through the mediation and God-given authority of the first-throned. but we did not yet dare to ask for this because of its exceeding beauty. But when it was inspired by the finger of God into the holy heart, this is also what our discourse seeks, this is also what we the unworthy pray to be accomplished, primarily for the glory of God, which would be the greatest benefit for His own church; for as there is one Lord, one faith, one God, so it is clear that there is also one church, even if it is headed from you. so you are securing what is yours, my lords, by caring for what is ours; for the members have the same care for one another, it says, and if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice together (we sinners have reminded, not taught, far from it), but as one of you
