danger and successive terrors, nor anything else cast out his love and memory for his disciples, but he held them all in his mind, and his hands were not so bound by his chains, as his soul was bound and nailed to the love for his disciples. And just as a king who has ascended his throne at dawn, and is seated in the royal courts, immediately receives countless letters from all quarters; so indeed he too, sitting in prison as if in royal courts, both received far more, and continually sent letters, with the nations from every side referring everything to his wisdom concerning their own affairs; and he administered so many more affairs than the one who was king, inasmuch as he had been entrusted with a greater rule. O, the power of Paul! He was bound in a chain, and he cast down Nero who was bound with the diadem; he was clothed in squalid rags, since he lived in the prison, and more than the royal purple he turned everyone's attention to the bonds that he wore; he stood on the ground held fast and looking down, and they, leaving the one on the golden chariot, paid attention to him; and rightly so. For it was a common sight to see a king sitting on a chariot of white horses; but this was strange and paradoxical, to see a prisoner conversing with a king with as much boldness as a king would with a wretched and miserable slave. A large crowd stood around, and all were slaves of the king; but they marveled not at their own master, but at the one conquering their master. But I have been praising the lion by his claw, when I ought to be praising him for other things. What things? How he will come with the 63.797 King of the heavens in glorious array; how Nero will then stand dejected and grim. For if the time for crowns has not yet come, and the athlete has enjoyed such honor; when the giver of the prize comes, what honor will he enjoy? He was in a foreign land, he was a stranger and a sojourner, and is so admired; when he is in his own country, what good will he not enjoy? What will he not share in? What will he not obtain? No one who became king of Rome enjoyed as much honor as Paul; but the king lies cast out somewhere outside, while the other occupies the middle of the city, as if ruling and living. And if here, where he was driven out and where he was persecuted, he enjoyed such honor; when he comes, what will it be? if where he was a tentmaker, he became so glorious; when he comes shining in opposition to the rays of the sun, what will it be? if with such humility, he overcame such magnificence; when he comes, what will it be? Is it not possible to escape these realities? Do you wish me to show you the tentmaker having become more honored than the most admired of all kings? What is more glorious than Alexander according to the world's glory? What is more exalted? Did he not accomplish many and great things while living? Did he not subdue nations and cities, and win many wars and battles, and set up trophies? Was he not considered to be the thirteenth god by the Roman senate? But to accomplish wars and victories while alive, being a king and having armies, is nothing wonderful; but after death and the grave to work such things everywhere on land and sea each day, this is what is especially full of much astonishment. For where, tell me, is the tomb of Alexander? Show it to me and tell me the day on which he died; but you could not. But of Paul one might see both the glorious tomb upon visiting the most royal city of Rome, and his well-known day, which makes a festival for the whole world. And the one even his own people do not know, but the other even the barbarians know; and the tomb of the servant of Christ is more splendid than the royal courts. For even he who wears the purple goes to embrace that tomb, and laying aside his pride, stands beseeching the dead man, so that he might stand as his patron before God, and he who wears the diadem begs for the tentmaker and the fisherman, though dead, as a protector. And this one might see not only in Rome, but also in

Εἰ γὰρ οὔπω τῶν στεφάνων ὁ καιρὸς, καὶ τοσαύτης ἀπέλαυσε τιμῆς ὁ ἀθλητής· ὅταν ὁ ἀγωνοθέτης ἔλθῃ, πόσης ἀπολαύσεται τιμῆς; Ἐν τοῖς ἀλλοτρίοις ἦν, ξένος ἦν καὶ παρεπίδημος, καὶ οὕτω θαυμάζεται· ὅταν ἐν τοῖς ἰδίοις ᾖ, τίνος οὐκ ἀπολαύσεται ἀγαθοῦ; τίνος οὐ μεθέξει; τίνος οὐκ ἐπιτεύξεται; Οὐδεὶς βασιλεὺς γενόμενος τῆς Ῥώμης τοσαύτης ἀπέλαυσε τιμῆς ὅσης ὁ Παῦλος· ἀλλ' ὁ μὲν βασιλεὺς ἔξω που κεῖται ἐῤῥιμμένος, ὁ δὲ τὸ μέσον κατέχει τῆς πόλεως, καθάπερ βασιλεύων καὶ ζῶν. Εἰ δὲ ἐνταῦθα, ἔνθα ἠλαύνετο καὶ ἔνθα ἐδιώκετο, τοσαύτης ἀπέλαυσε τιμῆς· ὅταν ἔλθῃ, τί ἔσται; εἰ ὅπου σκηνοποιὸς ἦν, οὕτως ἐγένετο λαμπρός· ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἀντιλάμπων ταῖς ἡλιακαῖς ἀκτῖσι, τί ἔσται; εἰ μετὰ τοσαύτης εὐτελείας, τοσαύτης μεγαλοπρεπείας περιεγένετο· ὅταν ἔλθῃ, τί ἔσται; Μὴ ἔνι φυγεῖν τὰ πράγματα; Βούλεσθε δείξω τὸν σκηνοποιὸν ἐντιμότερον γεγονότα τοῦ πάντων βασιλέων μᾶλλον θαυμασθέντος; Τί τοῦ Ἀλεξάνδρου ἐνδοξότερον κατὰ τὴν τοῦ κόσμου δόξαν; τί ὑψηλότερον; οὐχὶ πολλὰ καὶ μεγάλα κατώρθωσε ζῶν; οὐχὶ ἔθνη καὶ πόλεις ὑπέταξε, καὶ πολέμους πολλοὺς καὶ μάχας ἐνίκησε, καὶ τρόπαια ἔστησεν; οὐχὶ τρισκαιδέκατος ἐνομίσθη εἶναι θεὸς παρὰ τῇ συγκλήτῳ Ῥωμαίων; Ἀλλὰ τὸ μὲν ζῶντα κατορθοῦν πολέμους καὶ νίκας, βασιλέα ὄντα καὶ στρατόπεδα ἔχοντα, θαυμαστὸν οὐδέν· τὸ δὲ μετὰ θάνατον καὶ τάφον τοσαῦτα πανταχοῦ γῆς καὶ θαλάσσης καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν ἐργάζεσθαι, τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ μάλιστα πολλῆς ἐκπλήξεως γέμον. Ποῦ γὰρ, εἰπέ μοι, τὸ σῆμα Ἀλεξάνδρου; δεῖξόν μοι καὶ εἰπὲ τὴν ἡμέραν, καθ' ἣν ἐτελεύτησεν· ἀλλ' οὐκ ἂν ἔχοις. Τοῦ δὲ Παύλου καὶ τὸ σῆμα λαμπρὸν ἴδοι τις ἂν τὴν βασιλικωτάτην Ῥώμην καταλαβὼν, καὶ ἡμέραν καταφανῆ, ἑορτὴν τῇ οἰκουμένῃ ποιοῦσαν. Καὶ τὸ μὲν ἐκείνου καὶ οἱ οἰκεῖοι ἀγνοοῦσι, τὸ δὲ τούτου καὶ οἱ βάρβαροι ἐπίστανται· καὶ ὁ τάφος τοῦ δούλου τοῦ Χριστοῦ λαμπρότερος τῶν βασιλικῶν ἐστιν αὐλῶν. Καὶ γὰρ αὐτὸς ὁ τὴν ἁλουργίδα περικείμενος ἀπέρχεται τὸ σῆμα τὸ ἐκείνου περιπτυξόμενος, καὶ τὸν τῦφον ἀποθέμενος, ἕστηκε δεόμενος τοῦ νεκροῦ, ὥστε αὐτοῦ προστῆναι παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ, καὶ τοῦ σκηνοποιοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁλιέως καὶ τετελευτηκότος, ὡς προστάτου δεῖται ὁ τὸ διάδημα ἔχων.
