For eight months the war between Constantine and Licinius was underway, as war broke out throughout Bithynia, the scoundrel is captured alive in Chrysopolis, and is sent to Thessalonica to be guarded, having however previously fought and been defeated in the city of Philip. But when he was sent to Thessalonica and there again was about to stir up a revolution by hiring barbarians, the emperor orders him to be beheaded by the sword; and thus affairs finally enjoyed perfect calm. Then Constantine appoints his own sons as Caesars, and establishes churches in various places for the conversion of the gentiles in honor of God.
In the 20th year of the reign of Constantine, the city having been completed was founded astrologically by Valens the astronomer, on the 8th day of its dedication, by order of the emperor Constantine, in the month of May on the 11th, the 2nd day, the 3rd indiction, in the year from the creation of the world #22εωληʹ. The whole summation contains 620 years. In this year also Crispus, the son of Constantine, a Christian, fell asleep; and Helena the mother of the emperor, having been crowned, goes to Jerusalem because of a vision, and having uncovered the holy places 1.498 and found the precious cross, she restored everything, and having built churches in them she adorned them splendidly. In these times the church of Hagia Sophia and of Hagia Eirene and of the Holy Apostles and of Saint Mocius and of Saint Agathonicus and of the Archstrategos in Anaplus and Sosthenion, where the Christ-loving emperor wondrously both heard and saw divine oracles, he built. And he ordered the idolatrous temples of the Hellenes to be torn down and churches to be built, and their revenues to be given to them. During the reign of this emperor many of the nations accepted Christianity, from both the Celts and the western Galatians; but also the inner Indians, and the Iberians and Armenians, beginning from Tiridates. For then the great Gregory of great Armenia was cast out of that dreadful pit and comes to king Tiridates, and all of Armenia is converted to the faith of Christ. and the Persians likewise under bishop Simeon. But also Uthaxad, a eunuch, tutor of Sapor, was martyred.
This great emperor, being reproached by Greek philosophers for innovating in religion, presented one of their philosophers to dispute with Alexander the bishop concerning the faith. But Alexander was a divine man, but inexperienced in speeches. So when he saw the philosopher being verbose, he said, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ our true God to be silent and not to 1.499 speak." And at the same time with the word he was muzzled and became speechless. Then there was such a great earthquake in Campania that 13 cities fell, and such an eclipse of the sun that stars appeared in the daytime. Then also every kind of serpent appeared in Melitene; who, having fought, killed each other, so that the land stank. And the Jews who were again rebelling about the building of the temple, Constantine the Great punished and scattered. And the blessed Helena, having returned from Jerusalem, and having commanded her son and emperor many things concerning the faith in Christ, died at the age of 80, and was buried in the church of the Holy Apostles. Therefore, the blessed one, adorned with all virtues, also had Christ-imitating humility towards all, but especially towards the monks. For gathering virgins and having them recline on couches, she herself served them, setting out dishes and offering cups and pouring water on their hands, she fulfilled the work of a servant-girl. And thus she also instructed her ever-memorable son to have a mind free from pride, to take care for virtue and an exact way of life, and to serve the Lord with fear and trembling; who, keeping her commandments exactly, bore fruit a hundredfold.
