slander; we beseech you to remain at home and to behave seemly, fulfilling the work of the Lord in quiet, to avoid their encounters, which are deceitfully made for the ruin of those who hear, so that you may both keep your love for us sincere and preserve the faith of the Fathers unbroken and may appear well-pleasing before the Lord as friends of the truth.
227.τ TO THE CLERGY IN COLONIA
227.1 And what is so good and well-pleasing before God and men as love
perfect, which we have been taught by the wise Teacher is the fulfillment of the whole law? Therefore I approve your fervent disposition toward your shepherd. For neither is the loss of a good father endurable to a father-loving child, nor is the departure of a shepherd and teacher bearable for a Church of Christ. So in your excessive disposition concerning your bishop you provide us with a demonstration of a good and noble purpose. But this good and heartfelt feeling of yours for your spiritual father, when it occurs with measure and reason, is acceptable, but when it goes beyond the limit, it is no longer worthy of the same approval. A good arrangement has been made concerning our most God-beloved brother and fellow-minister Euphronius by those entrusted with administering the Churches, an arrangement necessary for the time, and profitable both to the Church to which he has been transferred and to you yourselves from whom he has been taken. Do not consider this to be a human arrangement, nor to have been set in motion by the reasonings of men who mind earthly things, but be persuaded that those who have undertaken the care of the Churches of God have done this with the cooperation of the Spirit, and receive this impulse into your minds and be eager to bring it to completion. Receive, therefore, what has happened quietly and with thanksgiving, being persuaded of this, that those who do not accept from the elect of God the things ordained for the Churches resist the ordinance of God. Do not make excuses to your mother, the Church in Nicopolis. Do not be harsh towards those who have undertaken the care of your souls. For in the establishment of the affairs of Nicopolis your own part will also be saved with it; but if any disturbance touches that church, even if you have ten thousand guardians, your part will also be destroyed along with the principal. As, then, those who live beside rivers, when they see men from afar building fortifications against the currents, know that they are pre-arranging safety for them by repelling the onrushes of the currents; so also do those who have now undertaken the burden of the care of the churches arrange for your security in the protection of the others, and you will be under the shelter of every disturbance, while others receive the attacks of the war. And besides this, it is fitting for you to consider that he has not cast you off, but has taken on others. Surely we are not so envious as to compel one who is able to impart his own spiritual gifts to others also to shut up his grace within you and to confine it to your district alone. For neither is he who fences in a spring and obstructs the outflow of water praiseworthy, nor is he who prevents sufficient teaching from proceeding further free from the passion of envy. Let him therefore have the care of Nicopolis, and let your part be an addition to his cares there. For to the man more labor has been added, but of your care nothing is diminished. But this grieved me very much and appeared to be spoken beyond measure: that failing to obtain what we seek, we will take possession of the courts and will set men upon matters, for whom the ruin of the Churches is the main object of prayer. Lest, therefore, some men, carried away by senseless anger, persuade you to utter anything about these matters in public, and
