some catastrophe may indeed arise from this, and may the weight of what happens be turned upon the heads of those who provided the cause. But accept also our counsel, brought to you with a father's compassion, and the arrangement of the most God-beloved bishops that was made according to the will of God. And await us also who, when we arrive, if the Lord works with us, will exhort you in person regarding all that it was not possible to do through this letter, and we shall try to bring you the appropriate consolation through our very actions.
228. TO THE MAGISTRATES OF COLONIA
228.1 I received the letters from your Decorum and gave thanks to the all-holy God, that, although busy with the care of public affairs, you do not treat the affairs of the Churches as a secondary matter, but each one has shown concern as if for his own affair and for that which sustains his life, and you have written to us, being distressed at the separation from your most God-beloved bishop Euphronius, whom Nicopolis has not taken away from you, but in its own defense might say that it has received back its own, while in making amends it will utter to you a voice befitting a loving mother, that it will have the father in common with you, who will in turn impart his grace to each of you, neither allowing them to suffer anything from the incursion of the enemy, nor depriving you of his customary care. Therefore, having considered the difficulty of the time and having understood with sober judgment the necessity of the arrangement, forgive the bishops for coming to this course in the ordering of the Churches of our Lord Jesus Christ, and exhort yourselves as befits men who possess their own minds in perfection, and who also know how to accept the advice from those who love you. For it is likely that you are ignorant of many of the things that are being set in motion, because you are situated in the farthest part of Armenia; but we, who have stepped into the middle of affairs and are assailed in our hearing every day from all sides by the reports of Churches being ruined, are in great anxiety, lest the common enemy, having cast an evil eye on the long peace of our life, might be able to sow his own tares in your regions as well, and the Armenian part also become the prey of the adversaries. But for now, be at peace, as if consenting to have common use of a good vessel with your neighbors. And a little later, if the Lord grants our visit, you shall also receive a more complete consolation for what has happened, if this appears necessary to you.
229. TO THE CLERGY OF NICOPOLIS
229.1 An action done by one and a second pious man assures us that we should be persuaded by the counsel of the Spirit. For when nothing human lies before their eyes, nor do the holy ones rush to their actions with a view to their own enjoyment, but have proposed nothing other than pleasing God, it is clear that it is the Lord who directs their hearts. And where spiritual men initiate the counsels, and the people of the Lord follow them in agreement of mind, who doubts that the counsel has come about through the fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for the Churches? Whence you yourselves also have rightly surmised that our most God-beloved brother and fellow minister Poemenius has been moved according to God, who both came to you at the right time and came to the
