having withdrawn from the gates, they held an assembly; and since it appeared to them that matters would come to no good end, it was decided to surrender to the emperor through the Grand Domestic. And on the next day, having come to the gates of the city, since the Grand Domestic was also present demanding an account, 1.523 they said, “We did not think we had committed any great offense against the emperor, nor one such as to provoke him to so much anger as to condemn us to utter destruction. For knowing that Acarnania had for a long time now been ruled by the Angeli and had been completely cut off from the hegemony of the Romans, and now seeing the emperor enslaving it, and completely depriving the boy Nicephorus of the rule that was his from his father, and thinking that he was being wronged and that we ourselves would be guilty of the utmost ingratitude if we did not with all our power assist Nicephorus in the inheritance of his paternal lot, we undertook this deed and made the cities revolt from the emperor, not thinking that he would take it so hard, if the land which had for many emperors now not belonged to the Roman hegemony, were ruled by another besides him, to whom it most properly belongs by succession. But now, seeing him exceedingly enraged against us and besieging us for a long time now, and especially having been taught on the previous day by you and certain others who are friendly towards us that the emperor considers our revolt a terrible thing and will not cease the siege, unless we surrender willingly, until he has subdued and sacked it either by famine or by arms, we have decided no longer to remain in our former way of thinking, nor to continually raise arms against the emperor and all of you who are so great, fearing that we might render our 1.524 fatherland desolate instead of free and destroy ourselves along with it. Therefore, desisting now from warring against the emperor, we hand over both ourselves and the city through you; and you would know in what way, by managing our affairs, you will show that servitude to the emperor is sweeter than freedom for us and for our fatherland.” And the Grand Domestic, having praised them for what they had said, replied, “If your defense had not ended on a sensible note, I myself would have, just as on the previous day, shown through many arguments that the emperor is not the one doing wrong, but was rather wronged before for a long time by the Angeli who deprived him of Acarnania, and now by you, who are revolting unjustly, and that it would be just for you to suffer anything whatsoever, since you have become the cause of so many expenses and labors for him. But since you have done well to desist from your inopportune contentiousness and your senseless opposition, and have surrendered to the emperor willingly, I confess I am very grateful to you, and on your own behalf; first, because you have surrendered to the emperor and have not remained in your former opposition, by which you would perhaps even have been destroyed; second, because it was through me, so that I may have the pure pleasure of having both saved you myself and brought you over to the emperor; and third, because by having taken counsel for what is necessary and advantageous for both yourselves and your fatherland, you have saved both yourselves 1.525 and your fatherland; for which things I myself confess I owe you a reward for your safety, because through my goodwill towards you, I consider all the good things that come to you to be a gain for myself.” Having said to them such things and some others full of much gentleness and grace, taking along with Vasilitzes the governor of the city and the others who were of any account, he led them to the emperor; and having obtained pardon for their revolt and many other benefits, they returned, and throwing open the gates, they received the emperor and the rest of the army, handing over the city. But the emperor, whose inwards had been afflicted and who had been in a bad way from them even before, was then ill throughout the whole time of the siege from the hardship of the campaign, and especially also because of the unfamiliarity of the climate; and the whole rest of the army, being afflicted with dysentery and fevers and pains in the head, were suffering badly, and few there were who escaped the illness; but no one had died from disease, if
