this manner of consolation. Of which I praise not only the discovery of what was expedient, but I also admire the nobility of his mind, that he did not, by leading the matter into delays, dissolve the eagerness of those who sought it, nor give an opportunity for defense to those who opposed it, nor arouse the plots of those lying in wait, but immediately brought the good counsel to its conclusion. May the Lord keep him and all his household by His own grace, so that the Church may remain like itself in the succession of one of equal honor to his predecessor, and not give place to the Evil One who now, if ever, is vexed at the state of the Churches. 229.2 As for the brethren in Coloneia, we have both urged them much through letters, and you ought to accept their disposition rather than exasperate them as though they were overlooked on account of their smallness, nor by contempt lead them on to contentiousness. For the contentious are somehow by nature wont to become more reckless and to arrange many of their own affairs badly, for the sake of grieving their opponents. And no one is so small as not to be able now to furnish a starting point for great evils to those who want a starting point. And we say this not by conjecture, but having been taught by experience of our own evils, which may God avert through your prayers. And pray with us for a good journey, so that when we arrive we may be anchored with you in the present shepherd and be consoled together at the departure of our common father.
230.τ TO THE MAGISTRATES OF NICOPOLIS
230.1 The arrangements concerning the Churches are made by those entrusted with their leadership, but are confirmed by the people. Therefore, what depended on the most God-beloved bishops has been fulfilled; but what remains now looks to you, if you would deign to embrace zealously the bishop given to you and to repel strongly the temptations from without. For nothing so dismays either rulers or the rest, who envy your peaceful state, as agreement concerning love for the one who has been given and the strength of your resistance. For it produces in them despair of every evil attempt, if they see that neither clergy nor people accept their designs. Therefore, the opinion which you hold concerning what is good, make this the common one of the city; and converse with the people and all who inhabit the country on fitting topics, strengthening their good intentions, so that your genuine love for God may be proclaimed among all. And if we ourselves should ever be thought worthy to come and visit the Church which is the nurse of piety, we honor it as the metropolis of orthodoxy, because from of old it has been administered by most honorable men and chosen of God, holding fast to the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, of whom you have approved the one who has now appeared to be worthy, and we have agreed. Only may you be kept by the grace of God, foiling the evil counsels of the enemies, and producing strength and vigor in your souls for the guarding of what has been well given.
231.τ TO AMPHILOCHIUS, BISHOP OF ICONIUM
231.1 I find few opportunities for writing to your Godliness, and this grieves me not a little. For it is just as if, though it were possible to see you and enjoy your company often, I did this seldom. But it is not possible for me to write, because of a lack of people travelling from here to you; since nothing would have prevented my letters from being, as it were, a journal of my life, the things that happen each day
