unknown to idle talkers, unknown to those who speak shamefully, unknown also to the indolent, unknown to those who neglect hourly repentance, unknown to those who do not mourn unceasingly every day unknown to the insubordinate, unknown to the contentious, unknown to the self-willed, unknown to those who suppose themselves to be something, when they are nothing, unknown to those who boast, but are not also delighted in size of body or power or beauty or any other gift whatsoever, I tell you; unknown to those who have not acquired a pure heart, unknown to those who do not ask with warmth of heart to receive the Divine Spirit, unknown to those who disbelieve that the Divine Spirit is given even now to those who seek. For unbelief excludes and drives away the Divine Spirit; one who disbelieves does not ask, not asking he does not receive, not having received he is dead. (331) Who then will not weep for the dead man, because he seems to live while being dead? The dead are not yet able either to see or to mourn the dead at all; the living, seeing them, mourn. For they see a strange wonder, the dead living, and also walking about, the blind seeming to see and those who are truly deaf supposing they hear; for they live and see and hear like beasts, as unintelligent ones they perceive with an insensible sense, in a deadened life. ἄγνωστον τοῖς ἀργολόγοις, ἄγνωστον τοῖς αἰσχρολόγοις, ἄγνωστον καί τοῖς ῥαθύμοις, ἄγνωστον τοῖς ἀμελοῦσι τῆς καθ᾿ ὥραν μετανοίας, ἄγνωστον τοῖς μή πενθοῦσιν ἀενάως καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ἄγνωστον ἀνυποτάκτοις, ἄγνωστον τοῖς ἀντιλόγοις, ἄγνωστον ἰδιορρύθμοις, ἄγνωστον τοῖς οἰομένοις εἶναί τι, μηδέν δέ οὖσιν, ἄγνωστον τοῖς καυχωμένοις, ἀλλά μή καί τερπομένοις ἐπί σώματος μεγέθει ἤ δυνάμει εἴτε κάλλει ἤ χαρίσματι ἑτέρῳ οἱῳδήποτέ σοι λέγω˙ ἄγνωστον τοῖς μή καρδίαν καθαράν προσκτησαμένοις, ἄγνωστον τοῖς μή αἰτοῦσιν ἐν θερμότητι καρδίας τοῦ λαβεῖν τό Θεῖον Πνεῦμα, ἄγνωστον τοῖς ἀπιστοῦσιν ὅτι δίδοται καί ἄρτι τοῖς ζητοῦσι Πνεῦμα Θεῖον. Ἀπιστία γάρ ἀπείργει καί διώκει Πνεῦμα Θεῖον˙ ἀπιστῶν τις οὐκ αἰτεῖται, μή αἰτῶν οὐδέ λαμβάνει, μή λαβών νεκρός ὑπάρχει. (331) Τόν νεκρόν δέ τίς μή κλαύσει, ὅτι ζῆν δοκεῖ νεκρός ὤν; Οἱ νεκροί νεκρούς οὐδέπω οὔτ᾿ ἰδεῖν οὔτε θρηνῆσαι ὅλως δύνανται˙ οἱ ζῶντες τούτους βλέποντες πενθοῦσι. Θαῦμα γάρ ὁρῶσι ξένον, ζῶντας τούς νενεκρωμένους, ἀλλά καί περιπατοῦντας, τούς τυφλούς βλέπειν δοκοῦντας καί κωφούς δέ ὄντως ὄντας καί ἀκούειν οἰομένους˙ ζῶσι γάρ καί καθορῶσι καί ἀκούουσιν ὡς κτήνη, ὡς ἀνόητοι νοοῦσιν ἐν αἰσθήσει ἀναισθήτῳ, ἐν ζωῇ νενεκρωμένη. Ἔστι γάρ καί ζῆν μή ζῶντα,
