Caesar is killed by soldiers, not at Constantius's order, but neither did he prevent the slaughter. And Gallus and Julian, the sons of Constantius, the brother of Constantine the Great, were about to be killed along with him. But sickness saved Gallus, and his infancy saved Julian; for he was eight years old. And Constantius, though he had previously accepted the homoousion, later changed his mind through fickleness of opinion and the deceit of the Arian presbyter and of Eusebius the chief of the eunuchs and of Eusebius of Nicomedia. In the 3rd year, Constantine, having attacked the territories of his own brother Constans and joined battle, was killed by the soldiers, as has been said before. And Constantius, reigning over the East, handed over Gallus and Julian to be educated in a place called Macellum, near Caesarea in Cappadocia.
These two brothers became lectors, and they were eager to build a church to the holy martyr Mamas. But in the part where 1.522 Julian was allotted to build, the earth would not accept it. And having cut his hair, he feigned monastic discipline, and Constantius and Constans enacted a law that a Jew should not purchase a slave, since he would be confiscated for the public account; and if he should dare to circumcise a slave, he was to be punished by the sword and his property confiscated. In the 4th and 5th year, Antioch was in peril for three days from a great earthquake. In the 6th year, Constantius celebrated a triumph after conquering the Assyrians, and Sapor the king of the Persians persecuted the Christians, and Constans in the west ravaged the Franks. In this year a certain Didymus, a learned man, was known for being blind. The great Antony, meeting him in Alexandria, said to him, "Let the loss of your eyes not trouble you; for the eyes that you lack are such as even flies and gnats are able to injure. But rejoice that you have eyes with which even angels see." In the 7th year, a great earthquake having occurred, Neocaesarea was inundated and fell down, except for the bishop's residence and the church. Then also Paul the confessor was ordained bishop of Constantinople. In the 8th year, a great earthquake having occurred, the island of Rhodes collapsed. In the 9th year, Dyrrhachium, a city of Dalmatia, was destroyed by an earthquake, and Rome was in peril for three days as it was shaken, 1.523 and twelve cities of Campania were destroyed. And Constantius, coming to Byzantium, drove Paul the bishop from his throne, and brought in the most impious Eusebius of Nicomedia in a predatory and lawless manner, that receptacle of evils. And Eusebius consecrates the great church of God, which was completed by Constantius according to the testamentary command of Constantine the Great, and he brings the relics from Antioch and deposits in it those of the holy martyr Pamphilus and those with him, Theodoulus, Porphyry and Paul. And the Alexandrians killed Gregory, who had predatorily mounted the throne of Alexandria and driven out the great Athanasius for six years. And George, an Arian, a certain Cappadocian monster, is ordained by the Arians. In the 10th year, Constantius built the harbor in Seleucia of Syria, cutting through a mountain for a great distance, and he rebuilt the city. And he founded Antaradus in Phoenicia, which he named Constantia. In the same year there was an eclipse of the sun, in the month of Daesius, on the 6th, at the third hour of the day. And the exiled orthodox bishops together with Athanasius take refuge in Rome.
In the 11th year, emboldened by letters from Julius the pope of Rome, they took possession of their own thrones. But Constantius, who was residing in Antioch, drove them out at the instigation of the Arians. In the 12th year, a great earthquake occurred in Berytus of Phoenicia, so that the greater part of the city fell. 1.524 In the 13th year, Sapor the Persian, having besieged the city of Nisibis in various ways, and having diverted the river against the city and
