him and wished to absolve themselves of the charges at the trial, the emperor, too, perceiving that without a refutation he would not be able to stop the contention, permitted the synod. 40. And it took place in the divine temple of the Wisdom of God. And with the emperor and John the patriarch presiding, and the rest of the high priests and many of those in authority and senators sitting in council, Barlaam was permitted to speak first; for it was he who was accusing Gregory and the monks of the perversion of dogmas. And having first gone through many things and narrated the cause from which he was moved to these things, he then also presented the book, which he had written concerning these matters, to be read; and when it was all read, he said other things as well, whatever seemed to him to be profitable for the matters at hand, and finally he accused the monks of not even uttering the prayer, which they themselves say they pray by themselves, unceasingly and properly, but that it needed some addition, which he added, supplying the deficiency, as he said. And after him, the monks too were permitted to defend themselves against the accusations. And since they had appointed Gregory Palamas as their spokesman, for he was indeed different from the others not 1.552 only in his speeches, but also in having accurately learned the things decided by the theologians concerning God, he too, having taken his stand for the speeches, provided clear and firm proofs of his statements, not using syllogisms and geometric necessities, for it is not possible to demonstrate things beyond us from things among us, but by the words of holy and theological men, whom the Holy Spirit had instructed through them, by whom all things are searched, even the depths of God. And he demonstrated from many of his statements that the light that shone around the disciples on Tabor was the unoriginate glory of God and the light of divinity and divinity and the natural and eternal light of God and whatever such things are believed and called by the theologians. Then he also concluded from the theological sayings, that what is eternal and natural of God could not be created, nor the unoriginate glory and the kingdom of God, nor whatever things are praised by the theologians regarding that light. And in addition to these things, he also brought forward the tome composed by the holy men of Athos, which supported him as one who spoke the same things as the saints, but it accused Barlaam of much blasphemy and false doctrine. And since from many of the things said the victory was looking toward Gregory and the monks, with everyone now being persuaded to follow the saints and theologians and not the things spoken from the belly by Barlaam, he himself also perceived that he would not escape paying the penalty for his sharp tongue and buffoonery, 1.553 and approaching the Grand Domestic who was sitting in council there with the emperor, he asked for some brief help and counsel, by which it would be possible to escape the expected penalty. And he said that he had previously given the necessary counsel, advising him to refrain from much contention and to be persuaded by the monks as being wiser in such matters, and that now no less would he deliberate and do what was expedient for him. For if he no longer has anything to say against what is proposed, and has persuaded himself that the monks speak things that are better and more just and in harmony with the saints, why must he wait to see the vote being brought forth against him, and not rather rise up before, confess before all his former ignorance and his present recognition of the truth, and agree to obey the saints and put an end to his enmity toward the monks? For if, persuaded by him, he does these things, no harm at all will follow from his words, and the emperor and all the others will praise his change toward better things. For straying from the truth is not so worthy of accusation as returning to it, persuaded by the saints and theologians, is praiseworthy. And the monks, obeying spiritual laws, will now show a greater friendship and goodwill toward you, than the bitterness and enmity they previously showed, as
