their eyes and they recognized him.” 20Refutation20 ˉοˉζ. From where did the breaking of the bread happen? Tell me, O Marcion. From a fantasy or from a truly substantial, active body? For having risen from the dead, he rose in truth in that same holy body. But you made, O Marcion, instead of “Are not these the things which the prophets spoke?” “Are not these the things which I spoke to you?” But if he had said to them “I spoke to you,” they would have certainly known him from the phrase “I spoke to you.” How then does it say at the breaking of the bread, “their eyes were opened and they recognized him and he became invisible”? For it was fitting for him, being God and changing his body into a spiritual one, to show it as a true body, but to become invisible when he wished, because all things are possible for him. For Elisha too, being a prophet and having received grace from God, asked God 2.155 that those seeking him be struck with blindness, and they were struck and did not see him as he was. But also in Sodom the angels hid the door of Lot and the Sodomites did not see it. Was the door of Lot also an illusion, O Marcion? No contradiction is left to you. For he clearly broke the bread and distributed it to his disciples. 20Scholion20 ˉοˉη. “Why are you troubled? See my hands and my feet, that a spirit does not have bones, as you see me having.” 20Refutation20 ˉοˉη. Who would not laugh at this nonsense, as he in his folly has dragged himself and the souls of others down to Hades? For if these things had not been confessed by him, his error would have been plausible and those deceived by him would have had an excuse; but now since he has confessed and has not removed these sayings, and his followers also read them, his sin and theirs remains, and his and their fire is inexorable since they are without excuse, as the Savior clearly taught that even after the resurrection he has bones and flesh, as he himself testified, saying “as you see me having.” 12. This is the case against him from the remnants of the gospel preserved by him, the subject of the treatise we have composed on his account, which I believe is sufficient for the refutation of his deceit. I will now proceed to the following apostolic sayings still preserved by him and again collected by us in this way, with those from the epistle to the Galatians placed first by us and arranged sequentially throughout; for this is placed first by him. We, however, then made the arrangement not as it is placed by him but as the apostolic collection has it, placing Romans first; but here we set it forth thus according to his character. 2.156 From the epistle to the Galatians. 20Scholion20 ˉα. “Know that the just will live by faith. For as many as are under the law, are under a curse; but he who has done them shall live in them.” 20Refutation20 ˉα. The phrase “know that the just will live by faith,” according to the things spoken by the apostle, is indicative of the ancient scripture, which things were spoken by the apostle for our life * from the law and the prophets concerning a new covenant and are consonant with our hope. And the phrase “are under a curse” means that in the law there happened to be a threat because of Adam's disobedience, until he who came from above came and clothed himself in a body from the clay of Adam and changed the curse into a blessing. 20Scholion20 ˉβ. “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” “but the one of the promise, through the free woman.” 20Refutation20 ˉβ.
